He was originally working for the Rockets on the legal side for ~15 years so he’s very intentional with how he does contracts and cap management. I think there are some in the fanbase with mixed feelings about his drafting or lack of moves at this deadline, but i feel like his contract stuff is pretty much universally praised. 

Dude has been very purposefully trying to move us away from the ‘Daryl Morey sees players as objects’ stigma, and being able to get our core guys to take relatively smaller, team-friendly contracts and maintain our flexibility is the payoff for that.

That Jabari contract is not bad, and the DFS contact being unguaranteed in the last two seasons is incredibly helpful

The Rockets are really good at giving out cheap, team-friendly contracts. DFS gets paraded around as a clown by Lakers fans but his contract’s only guaranteed for 2 years, which means that it’s an expiring contract right now. They did similarly smart moves with FVV’s fat contract but with team options.

So I imagine it’ll be something smart again for Marcus.

he’s more of a shooter than a maker

He’s had his moments, but only a 32% career shooter.

No, he’s just way too overconfident with his trash ass shooting. He doesn’t even take bad shots. He just bricks.

Streaky shooter yes, but playmaking has improved over the years (albeit with silly turnovers here and there)

I blame Stone more atp, if they run it back but now with Smart, I don’t know what to say. Sure maybe this team wins 60+ in the regular season, but then there is simply no way they win 4 straight rounds with this offensive structure and personnel

As I’m sure you know, he makes horrible decisions even in the playoffs and really should not be a primary or even secondary ball handler. He’s ideally a 3&D guard who can sometimes handle the ball. I think if the rockets are expecting him to take on a lot of PG duties then they will be very disappointed. I really don’t think he makes sense on their roster at all. 

That said I think it would be a huge mistake if we don’t try to re-sign him he’s still great on defense. 

Because none of those 6 play defense

losing your only good defender in free agency doesn’t bode well, there is no guarantee you pick up good defenders in free agency/trade

This could be an all-time bad offseason for.the Lakers, including the signing of AR.

I would happily give him up to three years for 30 million with a team option on the last year. He is a streaky shooter, but I think he helped us more than he hurt us especially when you factor in his hustle and him being the only guard who defended well.

The issue with trades is that you have to lose something that other teams want and the Lakers don’t have much stuff other teams want that they could afford to lose.

He is your best and only good defender, his on offs were genuinely mental last season. You are losing your 4th best player. If Lebron leaves, you sre losing your 3rd and 4th best player from a team that was already limited and miles behind OKC and SAS

Counterbalanced by the fact you have to live in Texas

AR is the exact type of contract we will regret real quick.

Depends on whether they can replace Smart. He started 54 games for them. Most of their best lineups are with Smart/AR/Luka. As he complements those two players really well. If they can say replace him with Dort, sure. But it’s hard to replace his playmaking, three point shooting (he fits well as he likes to shoot and makes them at ok rate), individual defense and team defense (he’s very vocal in helping his teammate in defense, telling ‘em when and where to rotate).
