I think it’s true across society, it used to be a bigger deal to go on TV. Now people are on social media doing livestreams of themselves eating, or getting ready to go out. Plus there’s an overall diminished focus on education & public speaking

To add to the other comments: ever heard of the concept of “affordances” in design? Basically, how things that we use shape our behavior, because their design inherently nudges us to use it in certain ways. For example, you’re unlikely to pick up a hammer on the wrong end and try to beat a nail into wood that way. Every object we use has affordances implicit in its design, its “interface”

Now ask yourself what kind of affordances smartphones and the apps on the smartphones have, and how that shapes the way we interact with each other compared to previous forms of media.

I think the way that interviews are conducted and edited also have a big role in the way that athletes come across. I would say someone like Victor Wembanyama is as eloquent as most of the athletes in the past, especially at his age.

I think if you conducted a longer format Interview with a lot of current athletes, you could get something very similar to the way this interview went. Most long form interviews now a days are podcasts that are intentionally laid back, less professional, and typically off the cuff, live stream, or lightly edited.

The pace of life was slower, as information traveled much more slowly back then.

So people weren’t rushing; books were the entertainment, and people were more social, so they were more often practicing how to speak.

And also, the ones in the video happened to be wise people.

When I happened to come across a Malcolm X interview from 1963, I saw how, despite the fact that both sides had disagreements, the interview was slower, people were listening more, and were allowed to speak without being interrupted.

They were respectful to each other, so a real discussion of ideas could come about.

No pressure for commercials or anything.

After seeing this interview, you bet I never watched political or any other discussion on TV ever again

I just couldn’t stand high-paced/populistic discussions, which have no real intention of teaching/enlightening the viewers about anything.

This is why podcasts are so successful these days, in my opinion.

P.S: I’m also glad I was born into an era when information traveled more slowly, and people were more patient.
