Unlike other ringless greats, CP3 didn’t tend to have a massive dropoff in the playoffs. He usually didn’t choke, but just got unlucky with injuries and facing other great teams.

He did early in his career, then a knee injury took away a lot of his burst. Similar to Tim Duncan’s early career knee injury, we forget about it bc how great their careers ended up being. We forget that they were both taken down a peg athletically very early in their careers.

Anyone who watched CP3 through Wake Forest and the 2000s knows how good he really was as a star — this isn’t some anomaly for these franchises. He truly is one of the best basketball minds ever at PG.

I would want him coaching the guards around Wemby again if I was the Spurs.

Pelicans CP3 was that guy. He lost some athleticism after an injury and wasn’t as dynamic of a scorer

For real, I feel like Shai picked up a lot of that midrange game and general composure from playing with CP3 that one year. That OKC season was honestly one of CP’s most underrated accomplishments.

That was the proof he was the winning. Doubled their expected win total with a young squad in the tougher conference. Always will rate CP.

That head snap Shai does when flopping 100% comes from cp3, no doubt in my mind. I think the way he uses his body to protect the ball is also a cp3 thing. Cp3 is definitely a great guard mentor

This season was some of his most impressive work. Everyone wrote him and that team off.

Raptors also made the playoffs with so many youngsters for the 1st time since 2022 with Chris Paul on the roster. Not a coincidence

Was honestly shocked he returned to the clippers and didnt want to finish his career playing with Wemby

Considering he’s better than every other guard on that team and the Spurs win at least 3 of those games if one possession goes the other way, yeah.

I said before, if it was CP3 instead of Castle, he would’ve demanded the ball from Wemby and not turn away and deferring which causes the crucial turnover after Wemby’s pass hit Castle’s back.

Would he have been available for the finals? That’s always his biggest issue - being there when it matters. Usually not his fault but still.

Another interesting tidbit from that season, he had less turnovers than steals while carrying that offensive load

You can feel that he is one of the greatest and still be critical of silly shanannigans he did. When you have that much skills and talents, you should cut out the shanannigans, like the floppings, and all the dirty tricks and antics he did. There was no need for those kinds of things in the game of basketball. He was too good to be doing those things.

CP3 is interesting because his playoff numbers are actually really good. It is just that in the clutch he would do some really dumb stuff trying to be smart. But, some of this is kinda not his fault, a significant number of his worst clutch turnovers were just plays when he got fouled and the refs didn’t call it. Still, there are plenty of times he blew it, like when he tried to foul bait a half court 3 point foul when up vs the thunder and Westbrook just stole the ball clean.

He never played with a wing who can just score when needed. Most of the Clippers stint had them rely on Jamal Crawford during the clutch who had atrocious shooting efficiency in the playoffs lol

He hit bad luck. Game 5 against the Durant GSW, in my opinion the best team of all time, while up 3-2, he goes down with an injury and is out for game 6, 7. In game 7 the Rockets miss 27 3-pointers in a row, and only lose by 12 points. If he doesn’t injure himself that year in game 5, they go all the way.

Bummed it didn’t happen for him or Harden, winning a ring. Injuries are part of the game though, it is what it is. I’m also bummed for the way discourse here on rNBA has started treating him by the young people(I assume) who never really saw him play, or know how incredible he was. The whole “he was a bad teammate” is such bullshit as well, same thing in regards to people confusing dirtiness with shenanigans, they are not the same, gaming the refs with intelligence is fun. CP3 shenanigans is second to none, and everyone has some dirty plays, he’s no worse in that department than anyone else.

He was an advanced stat god, and a great defender, for being such a small player. 200 IQ guy.

As time goes on I suspect many will have to be reminded how irritating Chris Paul was to watch play basketball. All the non-sense that was brought up about Shai, Harden, and Embiid over the years is nothing compared to CP3’s career as a hibitual unethical basketball player. 

What those clips rockets and suns teams were loaded with talent

Look at the turnaround he’s given some of these franchises and the lasting impact his mentorship seems to have had on players like Booker and SGA. Are the Suns better in his time there if he’s more easy-going to cater to the Deandre Aytons of the world? I doubt it.

Every great player with that hyper-competitive alpha mentality butts heads with their surrounding cast at some point from MJ to Kobe to Wilt. CP3’s history of it isn’t extreme or out of the ordinary.

Maybe if everyone listened to him more it would of worked out because the numbers show that teams get better when he arrives.

Its why i really really hope he becomes a head coach

I think they’re more stories of him clashing but ultimately getting along with his teammates than there are him flat out not getting along with him

Not really sure how you’re gonna hold 2018 games 6-7 of the WCF against him when he was injured for both those games. If anything it’s the biggest ‘what if’ feather in his cap. Rockets had one of the best teams we’ve ever seen on the ropes up 3-2 and he missed the last 2 games with a hamstring injury, and they lost. All that during his first year on the team. How is that dropping the ceiling?
