Agreed. It’s a professional league. If they want to play ball without anyone doing analytics on it the YMCA is an option. If they want to get paid tens of millions of dollars to play, you better believe the team is going to invest in every single aspect of it, from practice, to training, to nutrition, to analytics.

Also team analytics departments are WAY more advanced than what we see. Not just GM’s but coaches also rely on it for game planning. If it wasn’t for analytics the league average TS% would still be like 53% instead of 58%

That’s their gripe and as somebody who started their career at a pioneering sports analytics company, I concur. Most people entering the field don’t even understand how to properly leverage. It’s become a tool used to devalue holisistic value models; deployed by people who choose not to go into Investment Banking. If you look at the pioneers, there’s still the mentality that it really just tells you where to take a closer look. You still have to understand how to evaluate the opportunity. I’ll give you an example of a proiect. If you look around the league, there’s been an uptick in NBA talent born or raised in Arkansas. Those players often become plus role players and locker room guys. But this also holds true historically about Arkansas based players. I spent time in Arkansas to understand how the culture, socioeconomic pressures, etc shape this - overly simply put, there’s not a lot of economic diversity or opportunity, a culture that’s built around stability, etc. So when looking for somebody that can be a long-term role player and culture leader that’s highly coachable and has a willingness to develop skills that keep them in the league, you look for Arkansas based players. But you srill have to know what a good player that fits your system looks like. Most modern analysts would just say that there’s an uptick in players from Arkansas so if it’s between him or a guy from Wyoming, we grade the Arkansas player higher.

And I encourage you to google the players from Arkansas in the league today and historically and you’ll realize there’s a remarkable truth to what I’ve said. They stick in the league, develop a core valuable skillset - even generating FTs like Reaves - and they’re always noted as good culture guys.

Whoever is reading the analytics on JB and interpreting it as ‘7th man’ is a dumbass. Stats require interpretation and context and if someone actually believes what they told Marks, that individual shouldn’t have a job that involves interpreting statistics.

Analytics have fundamental flaws when it comes to sports. Obviously Brown is salty but some of the stuff that came out is ridiculous. One basketball exec said that his analytics came out saying Brown is the 7th best player on the Celtics. Anyone with a brain can see that’s bullshit. Lots of advanced analytics don’t hold up to real scrutiny.
