The nba will never do anything that will make them less money

As a traditionalist who would hate to see it leave 82, i don’t understand why they wouldn’t just start two weeks earlier and spread the schedule more.

But you also have to realise there’s zero chance the owners agree to less game. Especially when expansion is such a convenient excuse to add more games.

The league has been around for close to 80 yrs. It’s always been 82 games. It needs to stay that way.

As far as games going unwatched. Someone is always watching. Teams have local fan bases that watch ONLY them or at a minimum the nationally televised games. There’s hoop junkies who watch the 7pm EST games and the last 1030pm EST west coast games.

That completely ignores that there will be two MORE ownership groups that want their cut of the pie, but the pie didn’t increase in size. They flat out will not cut games.

The solution is obvious though if you think it through. Abolish divisions as part of the addition and moving a team to the eastern conference.

You play everyone in the opposite conference twice: 32 games.

Everyone in your conference 3 times: 45 games.

Add 5 random games to expand the IST (maybe do a true “final four” at a host arena?), and you’re right back at 82 with a fairly even strength of schedule within each conference.

Silver and the owners don’t care about viewing experience or quality of the game. And they won’t until they start actually losing money. That’s when change will happen. Right now it’s just take as much as you can.

Total revenue remains somewhat static but now there are two more teams to divide it up so less revenue per team. The new owners will have a lot of debt on their books, the last thing they want is to intentionally drop their revenue

76 games in a 32 team league would work nicely for scheduling and maybe make divisions matter again

4 divisions of 8 teams each

4 games against each of the 7 teams in your division (28 total games)

3 games against each of the 8 teams in your conference not in your division (24 total games)

2 games against each of the 8 teams in one of the divisions outside your conference, 1 game against each of the 8 teams in the other division (24 total games)

Out of the 38 home and 38 away games, 8 home and 8 away games will be played as a 2 game series where neither team has to travel

This would make great logistical sense, but the NBA and NHL are married to the idea of every team visiting every opposing arena once, which is hell for travel

Fans just need to accept not seeing so called stars every night and appreciate the entire roster.

All I know is I love the NBA, follow the sport religiously, and also think the product is absolute dogshit now.

I follow NFL, NHL, NBA, and even European football and NBA is the only one of the four where regular season games that are a meaningless, shit product. They could cut the season down to 62 games and it would do wonders for the sport.

Less games = higher ticket prices. The players and owners aren’t going to take less revenue.

You could do this by having 4 divisions with 8 teams each. You play the 24 non-division teams twice (1 home, 1 away) for 48 games. Then you play the other 7 teams in your division 4 times (2 home, 2 away), so 28 divisional games. 48+28=76, with 38 home, 38 away.

NBA would more likely try to get teams to play the same-conference-but-other-division teams 3x which would increase the total to 84 games knowing them.

Obvious counterpoint here: there’s 30 owners right now that each wants a share of the pie. They are only going to accept expanding the league if they are guaranteed to get something in return, as it probably lowers demand for their own team. Eliminating 3 home games and ticket sales lowers their revenue.

How are you going to compensate the current owners?

Will the players association accept less income? Less games will result to less money for players so this is unlikely to implemented.

I actually think they should just reduce the NBA season by one game a year for 10-12 years. There would be a small reduction in profits but it would still be profits.

It’s not even guaranteed they’re adding the 2 teams. Silver only got approval to shop around the idea of adding 2 more teams. If they can’t get good enough offers that are wildly overpriced to make up for losing future tv deal revenue, they won’t expand.

They’re not going to reduce the length of the season. Thats the basis of their revenue.

Sure but part of the math in selling the current owners on expansion is the extra 162 games they can profit off of.

The only changes to the schedule since people started complaining about it being too long added games. We’ll see a 90 game schedule before we see an 80.

Why not just eliminate back to backs and make the season longer? We ain’t doing shit in June / July.

If they go to 32 teams then they should drop to 62 regular season games, a home and away against every team. They could make up for less revenue with expanded playoffs or another tournament like the NBA Cup, maybe with international teams mixed in. We need more games that matter, and less that dont.

They aren’t going to shorten the season, it’s not even worth discussing the hypothetical. It just won’t happen. They would be choosing to make less money, and we’ve already seen that their primary goal is to maximize profits, even if it comes at the expense of the product. If they wanted to improve the product then there wouldn’t be approx 6,000 ad breaks every game.

Keep it at 82 games. Reduce the quarters to 10 minutes. That effectively removes almost 14 games of wear and tear on the players while keeping the same schedule format. Probably makes it more TV friendly, too.

Less games is a complete non starter. They could make the games mean more by weighting them differently or shifting the schedule.

Each existing team owner might get around $350 million from franchise fees for the new teams. So there’s that. But they’re not cutting the regular season, for numerous reasons.

I’ve always preferred the idea of just extending the season two weeks. Start a week earlier, end a week later.

Hear me out on this. What if depth and development matters and we can allow bench guys to play and develop and they actually matter.

The schedule is part of the sport. Managing injuries, managing fatigue, managing rest minutes, dealing with back-to-backs, dealing with travel; it’s all part of the test and competition amongst the teams.

Or, get this - just keep fucking playing 82 games like they always have.

As a Spurs fan I can’t wait for expansion. It had nothing to do with Fox’s contract.

I think they would make more if they did. I think the sweet spot would be closer to 60. You get more of the stars best games and every game just matters more. Similar to football or this world cup stuff.

I think they should add two teams out west and realign one to east. 32 teams play each other once home and away is 62 games. Add another set of division games if it’s four team divisions is 68 and then add cup games. Probably gotta do four team groups for that too and if they do home and away that’s 6 cup games. Each group winner advance and play 2 games to decide the final and everyone else play 2 games is 8 cup games gets 76 with the cup final being 77. Rotate the venue for the cup final or find another neutral location since Vegas is probably gonna be one of the two new teams and I guess I’d like to see Seattle get the other

The problem is local revenue. Each arena seats on average lets say 15000 at 40 dollars a ticket. That is 600k a night. Times that by 82, now we are talking about 49,200,000. Change that math to 72 games 45,600,000. You are now looking at about a 4-5 Million dollars shortfall. Then you have Arena costs that are calculated into this also. Which some communities won’t be able to support Arena’s that are not used in all 82 games. Sorry but I don’t see a way this is possible.

The NbA would rather just have stars load manage and sit out games than have fewer games.

62-games in a regular season, playing each other team once at home and once on the road, would be nice. But the question would be if that makes the games special enough to increase prices and sales sufficiently for those lesser games.

Unfortunately revenue would take a hit because now you’re splitting the revenue from those games 32 ways instead of 30.

Given how much money everyone is making it wouldn’t make a practical difference but that’s not how the ultra wealthy look at things

I mean people want to see stars. They only play 65 games and miss 17 games. 17 less games from stars is bad. But cutting games to 76 and even if they play all 76, and the end of the day people got to watch their stars just 11 more game?
