The worst part is despite the fact that they were incompetent, if Lonzo Ball’s knees had held up, I bet there would have been a decent playoff run or two. Not a chip, but maybe a conference finals appearance or something.

Like having shitty ownership is the worst, but having the potential good times ruined by injuries anyway just makes it that much worse.

I actually don’t believe that they would have even gotten that far.

That little run we had when Lonzo and everyone was healthy seemed like a smokescreen. We were getting cooked by the majority of legitimate teams while beating every mid and bad teams. The W/Ls looked good overall, but they weren’t going anywhere. If anything, they were just gonna get exposed in the first round of the playoffs.

That’s distinctly possible and you would have obviously been watching closer than I was but I feel like Lonzo and Caruso are the kind of guys whose skills played up in the playoffs and Derozan was still actually a near-elite player. LaVine and Vuc having less than great defense would have been an issue but I think Javonte Green and even young Ayo and Coby White were competent playoff players.

I think their chances of a championship were essentially zero because the bigs were not that caliber but I think healthy they could have been a top 4 seed and won a playoff series or two.

He regressed a lot as a shooter after the extension, but his 3% was very good before. Kind of why I didn’t care about the deal that much at the time, figured even if he doesn’t get much better he’d at least be a playable 3 and D with size.

But the main problem is he just has some of the worst instincts/processing in the entire NBA. When he was younger, it was kind of easy to hand wave away as kinks that will be ironed out with experience, but if anything it’s gotten worse or maybe he’s more in his own head about it.

There’s a lag to every dribble/pass/shoot decision he makes, and I’ve legitimately never seen a guy make half as many low awareness plays over and over again like his back heel being on the out of bounds line while catching a pass or all his shuffle step travels.

6’6 doesn’t do his size any justice. He has some of the biggest hands in the league, 7 foot wingspan, and is built like a tight end probably 240 pounds of muscle. Early in his career he would dunk EVERYTHING
