Then Mavs medical staff decided a lot of things; they decided to overplay Kyrie (who got hurt), they decided to rush back Lively (who got double-hurt), they fired Luka’s specialized medical staff and when Luka insisted on rehabbing his knee fully and not coming back early, they just straight up traded him

Nico fired one of the best and most respected health guys in the league (Casey Smith), who then ended up following Brunson to New York and has been directly quoted as one of the reasons for the teams health over the last few years.

He replaced him with two random bozos. One of them was making Lively ramp up to start playing again while his foot was still fractured/broken

He had a broken ankle and they missed it at first and let him play. It got worse and he had some complications and he’s mostly been out for more than a year now.

They probably ruined his career (hopefully not), because Nico fired the best medical staff in the league and hired some of his people that weren’t really qualified.

I’m sure they’d messed up Luka too, if he didn’t have his own staff. They were pushing him to come back early on calf strain, but his medical staff didn’t allow it

The sample size was small, but he was in line to become the premier Wemby stopper (or at least slow-downer, but that doesn’t sound as good). As a former Mavs fan before the trade, I noticed that Lively gave Wemby an incredibly hard time every time they played. And with them being in the same draft class, Lively could have had an amazing career just based on teams overpaying him to go agaisnt Wemby.

Sadly I do not think Lively can catch back up to Wemby. But I’ll always love his 2024 run.

I didn’t say he was never going to make a comeback but clearly using a historical probability is much more accurate than using a random probability you come up in your head. Otherwise what’s the probability? 50 percent? 35 percent? I don’t know but I would guess it’s extremely close to 0 percent based on historical outcomes, even if the real probability isn’t actually exactly 0 percent.

It’s like asking what are the chances a team comes back from 0-3 down. I know it’s not literally 0 percent but it’s extremely close to 0 percent given no team in NBA history has done it in many attempts. I wish him luck and hope he recovers but it’s honestly not a great trajectory for him going forward. The best case is he’s on a minutes/games restriction the way Rob Williams/Mitchell Robinson are and are career backup centers, not as good as when they were healthy.
