Sounds like Detroit is taking S&Ts off the table and telling Duren’s reps it’s either an extension or go out and get an offer sheet.

IMO, even when teams successfully play hard ball with their RFAs and dare them to find an offer sheet, it seems like it starts a timer where the player eventually get traded/leave in the next free agency period because of the bad blood that comes from those negotiations.

Gordon Hayward, Deandre Ayton, Jonathan Kuminga come to mind.

I will say, given Duren’s playoff record, it’s more than fair for Detroit to draw a line in the sand.

Greg Monroe and Pistons were back and forth with each other as his rookie contract came to a close, and neither side was happy with the offers on the table. So, Monroe eventually signed his QO, played the final year of his contract, and then became an unrestricted free agent, which eventually saw him walk out of Detroit, (then float around the league as a role player for 8 different teams in five seasons before being out of the NBA entirely.)

Not saying Duren would follow the same path (I think he has way more upside than Monroe ever did), but there is some precedent here when looking at only Pistons history.

Normally I’d agree, and I’ve always try to give leeway to players that have bad playoff runs, but he was like, really bad. You’re right that some of it is the spacing, - that became very apparent in the Orlando series where there were 3 guys constantly roaming the paint and clogging the lanes, but he was missing wide open layups/dunks, would stand still in action, played bad defense in the majority of his minutes, and got out-hustled routinely.
