There are so many young people on Reddit that do not understand the difference between 41 (what LeBron was last season) and 45. I’m 46 and, let me tell you, you do not age linearly between 41 and 45. This is supported by both anecdotes and science.

Even seeing 41 year-old-LeBron, I do not expect him to be in the league at 45.

Boris Diaw scored 4 PPG in over 17 MPG for Utah the year before. The year after this thread, he scored 11 PPG in Europe in his final season. At this point, it’s completely reasonable that LeBron could be better than that at 45 if he actually wanted to play that long.

Aging and athleticism are two different things. LeBron is an athletic freak, but that doesn’t mean he ages differently. All humans being age non-linearly in their early 40s and there’s no reason to think that LeBron would be immune to that because he handled slow aging in his late 30s better than others (or was so great that even an aged LeBron is good at 41).

You can’t spend money to slow aging. There are billionaires all over the world trying to do just that, and it doesn’t work. You can adapt to it with money, but LeBron just cannot spend money to prevent his body from feeling more pain and recovering more slowly. No amount of money prevents you from losing your agility.

You’ll experience it in your early-40s and you’ll see for yourself. From the outside it is easy to write it off and attribute fault to the people experiencing it, but once you get there you’ll see it and understand. For example, I had perfect vision my entire life (better than ²⁰⁄₂₀) and then all of a sudden I require light to read small print and it takes a minute in the morning for my eyes to wake up and focus on things. Our bodies are not designed to function at peak level post-40 and these things just happen.

Yeah, he’s one of the few examples and playing quarterback is much less physically demanding than playing in the NBA. 30 years ago Nolan Ryan played until 46 but baseball is much less physically demanding.

Even the peak athletes have always and continue to drop in their early-40s. Maybe LeBron makes it to 45 in a sport as physically demanding as the NBA but it is highly unlikely.

The age difference is greater than people think, I can agree with that, but I think what you are off on is that he won’t even be capable of being on a team at age 45. There’s plenty of evidence now to say that he could still be capable of that, even with a substantial drop-off from where he’s at now, he seems like he would be able to play.

Now where you’d end up being technically correct is that LeBron has given many indications he likely wouldn’t want to continue playing under those conditions at that point. So yes, he likely won’t be in the league at 45, but not because he couldn’t if he tried, but because he won’t find it rewarding enough to make the sacrifices he is making to keep playing.

You say aging in 40s is not linear, well it’s not linear in the 30s to some people either. I guarantee you that I’ve aged way worse than some other people from my lower and mid 30s into my upper 30s because I don’t take care of myself the way others do.

You also said in another comment that LeBron will be a much worse athlete at 45 than he was at 41, which I don’t really think is that controversial, but that’s also a softer statement to make than the prior one you made that he won’t be in the league at 45 (with the implication that he won’t be in the league because age will have made him regress too much to make him capable of playing in the league).
