[Highlight] Jayden Quaintance said the Spurs cut him off from wearing 21: “As soon as I got drafted they were like “Here’s a couple number options that you’ll have.’ They killed that dream pretty fast”
Mf was not about to get Timmy’s blessing lol
I don’t think Duncan would care, but the organization should still care and not put it on Duncan to make that call.
“if he does well people talk about me. If he does poorly people say how much worse he is than me. Either way I win” paraphrase of some football great I forget exactly who
Michael Irvin
The Cowboys though don’t retire numbers. They have the Ring of Honor instead. 88 has become associated with great receivers though in their history.
I never knew that, i kinda like that tbh
They never have to worry about running out of numbers and it allows you to establish traditions with certain numbers. 88, Pearson, Irvin, Bryant, Lamb
The idea that there’d be enough historically great players to even get close to retiring that many numbers is insane
There are 22 starters on a football team every year. Football players can only have certain numbers at certain positions. It checks out.
They killed the certain numbers for certain positions rule a couple years back
Very similar to soccer with number 9 or 10. Only the best attacking midfielder or striker respectively get granted these numbers usually.
You’ve swapped the order here, but yes.
Kinda like F1 where only the previous years winner can rock 1 on their car
I would not have the confidence to show up as a rookie WR and ask for #88
Of course, that lack of confidence is maybe one of the reasons I’m not a professional wide receiver
(the others include lack of physical ability, laziness, dislike of large men running into me as fast as they can, other people in the locker room might find me annoying, I don’t know if my butt looks good in spandex, etc.)
“Mike Irvin wouldn’t have dropped that”
Giving Jokic his number has gotta had a huge negative impact on Melo’s legacy
I mean Melo actually believes the Nuggets did it to mess with him. It did a number on his mind and ego lol
that’s exactly what happens in football/soccer
Ehhh Timmy was competitive. I think he’d want a player to earn it. I don’t think he’d take cash for it but he ain’t gonna give it up to some rook lol Timmy didn’t even talk to Tony or Manu when they were rookies. They basically had to earn his respect
Yeah a lot of people don’t actually seem to know what Tim Duncan was like as a player. He wasn’t just humble I don’t care guy
He spoke in phrases
Oops, Almost
Nice try
Good game
Speaking in rocket league quick chat
Nice shot! Nice shot! Nice shot! Chat disabled for 3 seconds Close one!
probably the coldest trash talk anyone has ever done. if you can shut KG up you’re really on another level
“Knick knack paddy whack, red fish blue fish”
If Timmy was still around people would be bitching about him complaining about fouls lmao I remember the amount of edits or pictures because of Timmy’s usual face after the foul, the wide eyed mouth open shocked expression and two hands up like he did nothing wrong.
Timmy was stoic for sure but he was very competitive and still showed some emotion even if he was very deadpan about it in other regards like when after game 6 against OKC in 2014 he said they’d win the rematch in the most Timmy way possible, talking shit but still very stoic about it.
All in all I just said that to say yeah people here don’t really know what Timmy was actually like it seems and I don’t mean that like in a negative or positive way just noting I guess the age bracket of most users here or maybe not age but when they got into the NBA really shows, again not a bad thing but makes me feel like a mega unc I don’t even see any Chalmers face or Yu-Gi-Oh references anymore.
It all makes sense when you look at a visualization of the age of users on the sub these days
thank you, this was like coming home after a long journey
Wow, that is an insightful graphic. Kinda mind-blowing
https://i.imgur.com/5l0y3t9.jpeg
ahh The Great Chalmers memes are those of an era I cherish so dearly
You bastard. Took me back to 2015. Although that was before the timeline fractured…
If Timmy was still around people would be bitching about him complaining about fouls
https://i.imgur.com/bGwYxqJ.mp4
remember: tim duncan has never committed a foul in his life
earn it
So will Quaintance choose Dungeon N Dragons or the 100m butterfly?
Lol that might open the door
OG StarCraft
Warhammer 40K
Fun fact: Tim Duncan would only talk to rookies if they could demonstrate an effective counter to his 6pool or 14CC strats.
That’s not true. He would also talk to them if they could spot a tax exemption he missed
Reggae Tim looks chill these days
“Until you learn to stop mass carriers and cannon rushing, don’t even think about wearing 21.”
Timmy would respect the outcome of a best of 7 Starcraft match.
Totally agree. There’s 100 two digit jersey options. Franchises should be retiring numbers forever without hesitation. If the dude is good enough to give him a legend’s number, then he’s good enough to turn a different number into a big deal.
If the last player who saw that player dies, I think they should recycle numbers.
101 actually.
0 and 00 are different jersey numbers
Yeah the org isn’t letting anyone wear 21 his number is retired
Eh, Spurs let Bruce Bowen decide if LaMarcus Aldridge should wear his number 12. Bowen gave Aldridge his blessing.
Timmy seems like the kind of dude that would not give a shit if someone else wanted to wear his number. Good thing the team shut it down.
Actually Tim Duncan was there when he tried to get 21, but Duncan just told him “Nice try”
“Almost”
“Got you”
oh so close
At what point did he get T’d up during this interaction?
It was after he had already left the room and chuckling to himself
Duncan was extremely competitive internally he just didn’t make a public spectacle of it externally
Not wanting someone else to wear his number is more of an ego thing than it is a competitiveness thing. I know he was very competitive, but I don’t think he had any ego.
Every great player has an ego bro lol
“oh shit yeah that was my number huh, that’s sweet”
To be fair it was his college number lol not just a random ask
Somebody who wore 23 in college and joined the Bulls isn’t gonna dare to ask to wear that number. Kinda crazy he’d think there’s even a remote chance of wearing 21 on the Spurs. Maybe he’s ballsy.
Quaintance was 8 when Duncan retired. He probably didn’t know his number off the top of his head.
What in tarnation
July 2007 born. Dude was barely 17 playing in college 2 years ago
Dang dude what a baller. Also the fact I just am at my first week of my job after graduating college and I feel like a kid and I was born back in 2002, man these guys lately are so young. He was literally 13 when I started college and he got his full time job the same week as me 😭 no comparison or envy from me, that’s nephew
Yeah… Don’t dwell on it is my advice
Hey man, what the hell?
Duncan retired in 2016 that doesn’t make any sense oh my god that was 10 years ago
sounded like he was joking around in the clip
he played the equivalent of one year in the number. he’s not that attached to it
“You must have thought I’m Keldon Johnson.”
He’s a HOF “Doesn’t sound like he looks” player
Sounds like a project manager introducing himself at standup
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 yooo
Too close to home?
That awkward laugh almost made me feel like I was at my desk
Fuckin kpis and shit
Jayden I know it’s your first day but you need to log your rehabilitation in story points or provide a concrete estimation
Do we have a quorum? Can we start now?
What are my deliverables?
Turning unstructured data into actionable business insights.
This gave me a good chuckle.
Just by the voice, I can guess he knows JJK and some banger animes.
You would be right he’s very into anime
Also an avid chess player
He and Wemby are gonna get along immediately lol
Like wemby wasnt scouting the other blerds
Kinda looks like he would be though.
Damn he sounds like he was meant to be a Spur
Bring back the LAN parties
Wemby is going to run a team chess tourney next time he has downtime after a series atp
Saw him reading the Beserk Manga before an interview lmao
Could be a Halliburton situation
Halliburton weirdly sounds like he looks with both voices though
Hali is deep voice passing and high voice passing. True two way player
He goes from sounding like a bad Shaq impression to a cartoon cockroach.
It’s hilarious how he switches from each voice mid convo
Yeah his voice really caught me off guard lol
Seriously. Like KAT and Timmy
Sounds like Kat
Sounds like jdub to me
maybe it’s just because i saw this clip without audio first but def sounded a lot more like i expected him to
There’s actually a lot of these players without deep voices. Like Richard Jefferson too
I disagree he looks just like he sounds. Edit* I’ve never seen him before btw
comments like this always make me side eye this entire sub
Seriously… Like what’s he supposed to sound like OP? 👀
I only got to your comment because I was scrolling before I commented “what do you mean, he sounds exactly how I imagined…”, to see if anyone else had already said it.
His voice also isn’t that high? He just sounds like a normal dude…
E: after the second reply, apparently kids in this sub need a biology lesson. Body size does not determine your voice. You people took your puberty lessons and ran with them without actually learning anything…
Bruh he’s 6’10” 250 we just expect a little more bass in his voice lmfao
He’s absolutely enormous and his voice has the same pitch as a 5’ 8” IT guy.
giving bio lessons in this sub feels strangely similar to seeing those Christian activists parked just outside metal festival grounds
Castle still doesn’t look like he sounds
Bizzaro hartenstein
I was about to say who voiced over this lol
Honestly, he sounds exactly like I’d imagine him looking, especially with that big ass smile
He’s got the KAT gene that’s a winning player in my book
“his voice is *wiiiiildly high*”
Richard Jefferson my GOAT
Just like Timmy himself
JDub is my current favorite of those in the league
Kinda sounds like Duncan’s voice and looks like Duncan’s dreads
When I saw his photos during the draft I thought he looked like a giant caveman. Definitely shocked
He sounds like a nerd, ngl.
If he had a dream about wearing 21 on the Spurs, he should wake up and apologize to Mr. Duncan.
Is this a Do the Right Thing reference or is that joke more popular than I thought?
Makes me think of Reservoir Dogs. Harvey Keitel: “If you shoot me in a dream, you better wake up and apologize.”
The first time I ever heard someone say it was Ali back in the 60s.
It’s actually my favorite Bible verse “Verily I say unto thee, if thou shouldst smite me in a dream, thou hadst best awaken from thy slumber and make thine amends”
I’m pretty sure the Bible quote is a reference to when Ali said it

He might be able to get Duncans punisher knee brace if he’s lucky.
And luckily we can all be like Timmy by enjoying the latest fashions at a fair price at Kohls
Why is it called punisher?
It was airbrushed with the Punisher logo. He was a big fan of the comic book series, so much so that he and his car shop (he’s also a big car guy) got a cameo in one release.
That’s pretty funny
Apart from retired numbers, don’t players have the leeway to pick what number they want? Was it pre-determined?
Like say, 33 was never contested, but the team already had something else for me (e.g 14, 15, 16), I have to go with the team’s choice?
I’m sure it’s a discussion in most cases
not that I know. at least in the other leagues, especially the nfl, guys choose whatever number they want if it’s not retired or taken. the nfl even relaxed the rule that you could only pick numbers that were designated for your position
I wish the NFL would change it back. Seeing all these players pick single digit numbers looks gross.
I want true chaos give me an O-line player with 1
Gonna need a 99 QB, stat!
That’s my old man yells at cloud topic. I always felt like it was fine in college but then you get to the professional level and there’s uniformity to match. Just like for the rest of us, you can wear PJs to class but the real world requires a higher level of dress. And it made it easier to identify what was happening, now if 21 makes a play could be a RB, WR, TE, DB, or LB when it used to just be a RB or DB
I feel like there should be a blood duel for retired numbers. Would make the off-season way more interesting. Let them choose their own weapons and get it on.
Old man Duncan probably still has enough juice to fight for his number.
He practices Muay Thai and kickboxing, in which he has a black belt for. I think he has a pretty decent chance!
Duncan boutta cut a rookie open with his elbows
You’re thinking wemby
I knew that was him I saw at the last kumite!
Since after his 3rd season he was never able to properly extend that knee and developed a game that heavily worked against diminishing athleticism, you know those fundamentals are still solid af
There’s no gradings in Muay Thai bro
I was talking about the kick boxing, sorry if it wasn’t clear.
isnt the entire point of retired numbers is they’re retired?
You already killed their current roster now your coming for their retired greats
Is he related to Kevon Looney?
That’s his son
turns out he might have been wearing 21 all along cause it was Tim Duncan’s number. he mentions Duncan being his grandfather’s favorite player and thus his.
Fuck im getting old. Dude’s grandpa?
You should see the Spurs sub reactions, pretty funny.
Ngl if he fulfills his potential and grows new knees his jersey might be up there as well
sorry english is my first language. what context am i missing
21 was retired because of Tim Duncan.
Tim Duncan(Spurs Legend) wore 21. He’s joking they shut down his dream of wearing 21, even though he knows that he wasn’t getting it.
Yeah, ain’t no way he actually asked for it, just making jokes.
Tim Duncan - Greatest PF ever wore 21 for the Spurs.
Tim Duncan wore 21
Tim Duncan is the Spurs best player ever and wore 21.
The spurs retired his number when he retired as a way to honour him
Tim Duncan had the number previously and it’s retired by the Spurs
Duncan wore 21 lol
21
I’ll take a 7 ill make it 21 like im tim duncan
Luke Kornet took #7 and was quoted as saying he hoped to be on-third the player Timmy was.
I love that guy
This is NOT what I expected his voice to sound like…rookies these days got no bass in their voice lol…it doesnt matter, just an observation
Probably helps that draftees back then were drafted around 22-23, while they’re usually drafted at 18-19 in today’s NBA.
That miiiight play a role.
This man is probably going to be our Kevon Looney
Bro looks like looney
21, 21, 21
The relationship with jersey numbers in American sports is so interesting.
Rugby you wear your position number. In football, usually a number specifically has a legacy and is associated with a position or style of play. Like if you wear 7 for Man Utd or 9 for Brazil it means something about you as a player and the teams intentions for you etc.
Guess it depends on the team/league. I know in the NFL with the Raiders they don’t retire any numbers so as long as the number isn’t taken and your position can wear it its free to select. Sure there are some legends for the team that wore certain numbers but Raiders let anyone wear those numbers. Sometimes rookies will select the legends number as a way to say they want to live up to that players legacy.
College football does that more often than other sports. Just off the top of my head wearing 7 at LSU means they think you will be a big time player building off that legacy. Wearing 26 at Miami used to be a thing not so much anymore. It depends on the sport and person I guess.
rugby league its very strict your number is basically your position. Equivalent is if in the NBA you had to wear like 1 as a PG, 2 as a SG, 3 as a SF, 4 as a PF and 5 as a centre
For NBA I think its cool the numbers are kinda random since it doesn’t really matter esp in more positionless basketball anyways.
For rugby league its handy for viewers to quickly learn whos who and what positions people are, you can compare like a #7 to a #7 from a different team etc.
I mean, come on. Homie gotta know that number is sacred over there.
Yeah buddy…TBH there’s roughly 9 retired Spurs numbers you can have before that one.
Got the KAT voice
The San Antonio Spurs officially retired Tim Duncan’s number 21 on December 18, 2016,
Oh you can’t wear the number of one of the greatest of all time?
Have they not retired 21 yet and if so what’s the hold up? This shouldn’t even be a conversation
They have, and I think it’s just the tongue-in-cheek portion of the presser.
It’s obviously retired, c’mon
Reading the headline made me wonder if they do retire numbers till I looked it up. Being a fan of the Raiders who don’t retire any numbers at all so I wondering if it was a situation like that.
I knew they did but some jersey retirements take longer than others. The headline definitely threw me off
Fucking duh
At least he can laugh about it now. 😂
If a jersey is retired, it should stay retired
As they should
His voice sounds like Richard Jefferson’s
I’m surprised that 21 isn’t retired yet if anything. This is a non news.
alright cut him off
yeah, i mean, it’s a retired number
Is this Kevon Looney’s son?
