Paul George was actually still good for 5 years with the clippers.

Yall crazy. It wasn’t just PG. It was PG + Kawhi. Make sure you put some context to the trade. AT THAT TIME, it was a no-brainer. All GMs would make the trade in a heart beat. Hindsight is always ²⁰⁄₂₀.

🥱 You can rightfully point to the Clippers lack of postseason success compared to the Thunder since the trade , but because of this trade the Clippers got Kawhi Leonard, James Harden (and then Garland), Russell Westbrook, Nicolas Batum, Brook Lopez, Derrick Jones Jr, Reggie Jackson, Serge Ibaka, plus all the players that signed extensions to come back to a team that was always on the brink of contention. It could be argued they got and retained Ty Lue and other assistants because of it, too.

I thought the picks OKC sent to the Knicks in the Ousmane Dieng trade were the Denver, Detroit and Washington protected 1sts not Clippers. So doesn’t that leave one 1st left unaccounted for in this trade? Or am I incorrect on the picks traded in the Dieng trade.

The clippers traded SGA and picks for Paul George which meant kawhi Leonard who just won the finals MVP would sign with them. They got PG who was just top 3 in MVP and dpoy voting and kawhi who just came off his best season ever.

Even with the hindsight of SGA becoming the best player in the NBA and winning OKC a title this was not a bad trade and will never be a bad trade.

Presti gets overrated for this. SGA was the only young player worth anything on their team. It’s not like he foresaw what SGA would be. If PG was on the magic SGA would have been there as well because he was the clippers on young asset

Pacers haul for Paul George was great too.

A big part of why they went all in on PG was it was necessary to secure Kawhi.

It didn’t work out in the worst way, mostly due to injuries, but the trade at that time brought in two all NBA players including the previous finals MVP.

Luka trade is infinitely worse. If Cliippers made a run in 2020 like they should have nobody would’ve cared about all the picks. Clippers still got their shot at the ring. The Mavs on the other hand got almost nothing out of Luka.

You forget that the trade also netted Kawhi. He wasn’t coming without PG.

Back then I didn’t think it was bad at all. I still don’t think it’s bad. People thought Clippers gave away 5 years minimum because that’s how Nets turned out to be. But Nets got stars that were about to retire in a few years. Clippers got a star with 8 yo experience and 7 yo experience, unlike Nets, who got washed up stars with 15 and 18 yo experiences.

Clippers got to WCF with this group. If it wasn’t coaching malpractice I am sure they would have another WCF run or 2. Some injury luck as well.

IIRC, for the Dieng trade the three 1st were all 2023. Detriot, Denver and Washington.

The 2024 clippers pick went to Washington in a 3 team deal where Dallas got gafford and we got a 2028 pick swap with the Mavs.

So the spurs pick and Mavs swap are kind of outstanding.

SGA.  Nothing more needs to be said about him.

Jalen Williams was a great pick due to OKC’s draft intel.  I seriously doubt the Clippers would have taken him so it’s not like we missed out on him really.  Props to the Thunder’s scouting department.

The other picks look like misses.  Maybe Mara works out.  But he could easily end up being worse than Yanic, who the Clippers drafted at 30th (with OKC’s pick) and now plan to develop into Zubac’s replacement as starting Center.

It was technically for Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. The Thunder still won by a mile, but when it’s framed properly it does make more sense.

Gordon Hayward’s release made the cap space available for the IHart trade. I suspect that cap space was an underlying part of the trade logic.

I didn’t see a post discussing this but I thought it was interesting now that “The worst trade of all time™” is fully completed.

If you remember, even at the time it was called a crazy overpay. The rationale was that they needed to do this to get Kawhi and it was a trade for both players.

When talking about this trade, I usually include the Clippers getting Kawhi, since they did this trade in order to sign him as a UFA. It’s still a bad trade, considering the Thunder have a Championship, but it’s not quite the worst trade ever.

Dieng was drafted in 2022, not 2024. OKC traded up to 11 with 3 heavily protected picks from Detroit, Denver, and Washington that were not a part of the Clippers trade.

The 2024 Clippers pick was used to draft 2 time NBA champion Dillon Jones. It was also used to get an unprotected pick swap with the Mavs in 2028

So, the haul is SGA, JDub, Sorber, Mara, plus the Spurs 2027 pick (lottery protected) and 2028 swap with Dallas. Barnheizer is probably headed to FA.

Also worth mentioning, that Tre Mann trade was a 3 man trade (Poku and David Bertans) to Charlotte for Hayward’s expiring contract. Presti used that freed up salary space to sign Hartenstein the following offseason.

As things stand now, the clippers traded a future duo of elite wings for a current one. SGA is 27 and considered a top 5 player, Kawhi was 28 at the time of trade and considered a top 5 player. Williams is 25, top 25 player. PG was 30 and a top 25 player.

Hindsight, Clippers true mistake was going all in on injury prone players. That’s a tough bet to make, and was ultimately what derailed their chances.

The OP seems down on the Hayward trade. Reminder: Presti took Hayward who had an expiring contract and dumped contracts that rolled to the following year. Taking Hayward cleared the books.

With the cleared books the Thunder signed… Hartenstein, a key piece in winning a title.

Maybe you say that isn’t a part of the PG trade but it is a ripple of that trade.
