Football(soccer) used to be straight up two 45 min halves with a halftime break. Now they added one hydration break of 3 minutes in each half.

People are mad at it, because it was not a thing for 100+ years and now they randomly decided to add it and play ads during it.

Im not that against it tbh with the heatwaves and how much more intense and minmaxed sports are getting it kind of makes sense in my eyes.

People are pretending to be mad that World Cup games take two 3 minute breaks per game so players can drink water and coach can share some strategy. The complaint is that it’s “only for commercials” which is certainly a part of it.

The same people watch professional athletes roll around on the ground dozens of times for minutes pretending they shattered their leg in five places trying to draw a penalty, only to then get up and sprint at full speed.

The two 3 minute breaks “ruin momentum” but the dozens and of stoppages because of flopping (taking a dive) are no problem.

It’s just people looking for something to complain about combined with a little “upvotes to the left please!”

Football isn’t a game of four quarters, it’s a game of two halves.

And there’s a reason for that. Permanent hydration breaks are essentially “timeouts” and there’s no room in football for that, it’s a game supposed to flow continually in regards to time and dynamics. No amount of flopping can equal a full stop in the middle of the game, it’s the greatest momentum breaker/shifter introduced in decades.

The ad thing is just the icing on the crap cake, now people have mid-game commercials just like the NBA and the NFL. Yay

Yes, if team A calls their pick in 2 seconds late then team B jumps ahead of them and has their full 5 minutes to use. They don’t even have to do it quickly, as soon as team A’s time elapses the next team is automatically on the clock and can take their full time.

There is no mad scramble of other teams trying to jump in as well, team A just drops one spot in the order, then after team B makes their selection team A goes back on the clock with another 5 minutes to use. It’s not like teams C, D and E can all quickly call in picks within a few seconds.

Think of the 5 minute windows not as how much time you have, but how much exclusive time you have. Once your time expires, you can still pick anytime because you have and are due pick, but now so can the next team whose clock started when yours ended. They can pick ahead of you if they get their choice in quickly enough.

Or at least this is how it has worked in the NFL a couple times. To my knowledge, I am not sure we have seen this play out specifically in the NBA.

Example: 14th team pick ran out of time. 15th team rushes in and picks. So now the 14th team can still submit their pick, but they got jumped and now the 16th team is on the clock. I noticed that the whole thing was carefully timed. They had to do it in order to get all the commercial breaks in. Also noticed how the commercials were pretty perfectly timed with the picks to make sure they were live when the pick took place.

The whole thing was staged and I would be willing to bet that teams were encouraged to take the full allotted time.

This news has little bearing on this take, but I really think Yaxel could be a relative bust. And I think teams were way less excited to take him than we would have thought. People are high on his upside as a 24yo rookie but how patient can you be if he struggles as a rookie… He does have a nice floor with his physical profile and shooting form so bust is probably too far, but I think he’ll be underwhelming compared to the buzz.
