Depends if they trade Rudy or not. If they trade Rudy as part of a large trade to get a starting point guard then they likely use either the trade exception or the MLE to get a starting center to split time with Joan Beringer.

Nothing about this is huge for Minnesota. They could have signed Ayo before anyway. This doesn’t enable them to do that in any way with regards to the cap. It just enables them to be cheap while doing so.

It does open up the MLE. But who are they getting with that who will help more than Randle?

Agreed, obviously there’s another move but randle is still an impactful player, a borderline all star in the regular season even if he slacks in the playoffs. Think the FO might be accepting being meh and resetting for a year to get off Randle + Gobert to completely change the team structure around Ant.

The picks are a wash. In fact the 2nd rounder might be better because you have more flexibility. It’s really not as bad as it seems. Dumping 33 million and only going back 5 spots while also gaining flexibility for the rookie contract is pretty good.

You moved 5 picks back, so didnt really dump your first for nothing. Paying Ayo, and I’d think Tim Connelly has something lined up for the MLE isn’t bad IMO.

Moving down 5 spots isn’t the same as giving up a first. They moved down further to dump Mike Conley at the deadline. Plus 33 gives them additional financial flexibility with their drafted player over 28.
