Unless there’s a deal that gets Milwaukee its own picks back from Portland, there’s just not a deal out there that makes sense for them to go into a rebuild. They have no real young prospects on the team, no draft equity, just no way to actually rebuild. A Jaylen Brown-led team of otherwise middling talent is enough to be competitive in the east. Not title-contending competitive, but winning-basketball competitive. There’s real value in just being a good team, especially if the alternative is being terrible for no gain.

Thats not a terrible team honestly. Rollins was pretty good last year and still very young. Turner while overpaid is still valuable as a spacing big. I don’t know what Nate Ament is.

You can screw up once, every couple of years when you try to swing BIG. Like every 5 yrs, you try for a big, ambitious move and if it doesn’t work out, you do your best to pivot.

Miami just hasn’t done anything. Getting rid of Butler doesn’t mean anything if you haven’t gotten anything back or anything back to rebuild.

Miami is in talks with how many big stars in the past and haven’t delivered a single one. The sentiment around a lot of talks has always been, “Just not a good enough offer” or “They just weren’t serious enough”.

At a certain point, and I think we’ve been past it now, you have to seriously change personel AND strategy to really compete.

You have one of the most wanted livable cities for rich players, the tax situation, a franchise with a decent-to-better than most history, a perennial top 5 coach, and a franchise praised for its cohesion/ chemistry/ lack of internal drama (unlike Clips or Kings).

Yet still, Miami never takes a swing BIG enough to get them to the next elite level. Getting Butler i guess counts but not adding after him is like not finishing the task.

The most common thing I’ve seen from them is something like Herro/Jovic/Ware plus picks. That isn’t really that appealing to Milwaukee, since the picks will likely be terrible. And from Miami’s perspective, that team probably isn’t a contender, since they will effectively be Giannis, Bam, and a bunch of mid/unproven players.

It’s kind of hard to stockpile assets though when you’re always bordering on a fringe playoff team. The highest they picked post LeBron was 10th.

Even when they developed guys, they never developed them into stars that could command a high 1st round pick.

At least now you’d have better odds in the draft. 10th seed is about as good as bottoming out used to be.
