Dumars is friends with the top people at the Pelicans. They didn’t interview anyone else when they hired him.
He should’ve been immediately fired after the trade last year. This franchise is run like a sewer.
I know this isn’t exactly the trade but would you rather have Queen or the 8th pick this year? Pelicans are so odd to me. You look at their roster/picks/cap situation and it just looks so clean and talented. Zion, Murray healthy now, Murphy, Herb, Fears, and Queen are all an excellent combo of good contracts, good players, and young talent.
I guess if you guys did blow it up you’d have so many avenues to getting loaded up on picks. So many guys with very tradable contracts and decent value.
The reason the trade was so bad was the upside. Because it was the better of the pelicans or the bucks pick there were two chances for that pick to be really high in a stacked draft.
Because of that, than was a nearly 50% chance going into the lottery that the pick would’ve been in the top 4.
Trading away a pick that (1) had crazy upside in a stacked draft, (2) still ends up very predictably mid-lottery in a stacked draft, in addition to (3) trading another first to get up to 13, is terrible process.
Maybe I’m just a plain old hater too but I also really struggle to see how Zion is positive trade value atp. He was just healthy for a pretty much the whole season and was nowhere near worth the max he’s getting paid. DJM is a very good player but he’s on a hefty contract and the last couple teams that gave up real value for him got burned so I can’t imagine the market for him would be super hot either.
It was also bad because it wasn’t just for number 8 - it was DQ for #8 in this year’s draft, AND #23 in last year’s draft.
I mean I think he had a pretty good year individually. Most importantly he actually stayed relatively healthy, but his money is basically really good 3rd option money for good teams for 2 more years. The gamble to me is the health not the money/production. Murray money is extremely fair for the next two years. I’m not saying either gets a haul, but they absolutely can bring pelicans some FRP’s if they blow it up.

Queen is currently a really bad player. He got off to a great start until teams figured out how to defend what he does best then was just awful the rest of the way.

Guards are easy to find, they need a wing and a big. NAW is a 2 who can guard up, and JJJ is a 4 who can’t simultaneously run the offense and play defense. Okongwu is a 4 masquerading as a 5 in true Atlanta Hawks tradition (looking at you 2010s Al Horford). CJ can hold down the ship for a year well enough

Alday Mara, eight round pick out of Michigan. The Hawks do not have any defense under the basket. The two players that the coach mentioned as the two best defensive players on the team is Walker and Dyson. Dyson even said that the Hawks should draft Alday Mara. When the Hawks played Dyson at center in the playoffs he said it was to much for him. The Eastetn division is a physical division, and most teams have 2 or 3 centers on their team. The Hawks have a lot of forwards not centers. Another center the Hawks should look at is Abramham Ollie center with Gonzaga, a good inside game around the basket, defense and rebounder. When you play in the playoffs it gets a much more physical.
At this point i just want to know every GM’s ringtone when Joe Dumars calls.
