Because Jaylen brown is not that good, and analytics view him as a guy in the 30-40 range who just shoots a lot and is generally a slight negative on both ends when he does so.

A lot of teams don’t believe in analytics (the Celtics are one of the most analytics heavy teams in the league), and view him as a t20 player.

Obvious opportunity for arbitrage here where you get a t20 trade package for a guy who you don’t see as a t20 player.

This is how the Celtics got Jrue (t20 player who analytics viewed as the second best player on the title squad) from the blazers, who valued him as a role guy.

You’re right on the first part, but I don’t see that as a sign of being braindead. Too many fans think that not being a title contender means you need to give up and tank. In most cases, those teams end up having prolonged stints in the cellar, and being the “next team up” when a contender suffers an injury or is forced to reset because of the cap can be a rational alternative, since it means you’re at least winning enough regular season games to sell tickets and keep fans interested.

All that said, I do think the Clippers are in the rare position where a teardown makes sense. Their core is old and injury-prone, and bringing in Brown just means they raise their floor while teetering on disaster if Leonard goes down again. If they wanted to be a play-in team with Brown AND move off Leonard while they find that chance to be on the fringe of contention, that’d be understandable, even if I am ultimately a critic of Brown’s.

To be an innings eater for 2 injury prone stars. Also just the belief any franchise cornerstones won’t be there at 5 or that they don’t think even getting a “2nd best player” kind of guy for the future is worth not maximizing the Kawhi core
