Jose Alvarado on Victor Wembanyama not shaking hands with the Knicks: “I got mixed emotions… the way he did it was a little too crazy for me because I loved how he competed during the game.”
Next season cannot come fast enough.
It’s been like a week loool
Yea no one cares about last season already
Can’t blame you for feeling this way papito
Oh shit we got that bling
Awww shiiiit
Worked hard for that flair 😤
It’s not their party rn lol
Honestly don’t let any curb your celebration everyone would be doing the same shit for their team
It’s me I’m no one
A girl has no name
Yeah y’all are speechless cause the narratives dried up 🤣
A tiny PG like Jalen Brunson could never win a [second] championship. He’s too small and unathletic to win [a second time].
New narrative just dropped!
Not for nothing but I love the bond between Thunder and Knicks fans:
Both teams blue and orange, both got foul baiting best players (allegedly!), you beat our rivals in the pacers, we beat your rivals in the spurs AND yall took good care of iHart.
Thunder fans 🤝 Knicks fans
Exactly - you’re not far off… exactly.
You Knicks fans can rest easy knowing the only reason these people are dying to get over these conversations is that they wanted yall to lose
Every thread about a subject that might be sensible to circlejerkers in this sub rn getting hit with a “offseason has begun” or “why do people care about that” lmao
The salt is so palpable lmao
This mini thread alone was started by a Sixers fan go figure
0-0
Nah we gonna be celebrating and talking about it for a while. Strap in dawg.
And all people can talk about are handshakes
And men say they don’t like drama
Don’t remind me 😭😭😭
Even the draft man, we need something else to talk about
We got a good draft, summer league will be fun
Talking heads will be talking about hand shaking during the draft
Draymond ought to punch someone to create new discussion
Wizards and Warrior trade incoming?
“Yea but can you imagine grown men not shaking hands?!?!?!” - Skip probably
“The blasphemy of disturbing the sanctity of the handshake” - Stephen a Smith
Same as it ever was
Bro the Knicks are NBA champions. I can talk about this season and run nonstop
Oh no no no, not so fast young buck.
let’s take the time to enjoy this summer. It’s only been one week 😂
Nah let’s sit back and really enjoy the moment
Summer hasn’t even started yet ahahahaha
I’ll wait to get some stars back
Jdub, Hali, Lillard to name a few
With that and a strong draft class we should be feasting next season
It’s the shame shit that happened to Lebron years ago. He didn’t shake hands and the media milked the narrative forever.
Probably more proof that the media sees Wemby as the true Lebron successor.
Started with the Pistons and Bulls. But Boston didn’t shake DET’s hands but the media never said anything about that.
Right. Bad Boys got swept and actually walked off the court before the game was even over. That was the biggest one by far.
Lebron walked off in the 2009 ECF after losing to Orlando and that sparked another shitstorm.
That LeBron situation was talked about heavily back then. I can’t even imagine how it’d be today with how entrenched in daily life social media has become and how crazy it gets.
Seriously. I really don’t feel like there’s a lot of hand shaking after finals games unless the game is out of reach enough to have a slow end where everyone can let go and do that. Also the media are total shit heads and have to literally create their own cycle.
Real G’s shake hands with 8 minutes left on the clock
I wonder if in a post-“No lead is safe versus the Knicks” era, would Ant still do this? When he started dapping them up, it was only a 33pt lead.
One thing that came to mind after watching the Spurs meltdown was the Thunder. Daigneault opted to sit his starters extremely early in the fourth twice duringthat series. There’s a solid chance they could have come back against the Spurs, but, instead, the coach opted to throw the game away.
I couldn’t stand seeing that. I saw the Spurs come back multiple times from being down double digits during the regular season AND the playoffs.
It’s not just Daigneault, it’s most of the NBA.
In the last two postseasons the Knicks are 5-3 when trailing by 20+ in the playoffs; the rest of the league is 4-71. They’ve got multiple 20+ point playoff comebacks in that span and nobody else is close. But the more impressive number is that playoff teams were just 5-733 when trailing by 20+ points in the 4th quarter in the whole play-by-play era. 2 of those 5 were this year by the Knicks (Cleveland Game 1, San Antonio Game 4).
The logic that you should rest your starters when down 20+ in the 4th to keep them fresh for the next game seems right at first, especially given the numbers above, and for OKC it usually worked—they’d beat the Spurs the following game while the Spurs looked tired. But it’s a bad tactic when you have to win 4 of 7 and you’re giving up a winnable game: a bird in the hand and all that. It also ignores that a comeback win simultaneously exhausts your opponent (scrambling while your offense heats up) and mentally breaks them—which is exactly what the Pacers did to the Knicks in Game 1 last year.
The Knicks weren’t the most talented team in the playoffs or even in the finals. I don’t think they were more talented than the Celtics last year either. They just don’t quit in a league that’s somehow gotten very comfortable with quitting.
Unfortunate truth with a lot of these things is that people’s jobs are on the line and no one is going to fire you for losing a game where you are a down 20 in the 4th and you sit your starters but you CAN get fired if you try to play for the game result and SGA tears his achilles.
It’s not fair but that’s how it goes. It’s like a coach with a mid team who gets a message at the start of the season “hey if we are doing well, we’re going to push but if we are below .500, there’s X/Y/Z guy on the bench I want you to showcase and we’re going to play for the draft”. He could try really hard to make the playoffs, but its dangerous if they get close and fail. Meanwhile, if he just… doesn’t try that hard the first half of the season, they switch into tanking mode, the pressure is off and you can push the bill of ‘proving you are the right coach’ down the line.
Load management mentality
Ant was making his elevator pitch on why he would make a good addition to our team
We are intrigued, but we need to see his dance moves
It was fun poking fun at Ant for, like, a day. The finals ended over a week ago and people still talking about this.
How many finals have you watched? Because this is the first one I can remember where the whole team walked off without congratulating the winner. Like, the bad boy pistons are literally the only other ones I can’t think of, and that was almost 40 years ago…
> 40 years ago…
No no the 80s were only 20 years ago
Even the 2016 Warriors stayed bask and shook hands.
It’s not a strong norm in basketball the way it is in some other sports.
I mean MJ did say he had to swallow it and shook hands with Pistons… two straight years coz he was taught to carry himself with sportsmanship even in tough loss. Without all these codes of conduct, sports are merely an animal brawl in a pit.
He didn’t want to man, that shit was pure business
i wonder if it being literally one day removed from the nhl championship with the usual handshake line is a factor
because that does kinda immediately come to mind as soon as anyone’s like “no they’re too upset about the loss to do that”
I mean all of the ones in the past 10 years did at least…
This is a lie there’s a supercut of every finals from the last 20 years and they all honored their opponent.
every losing team shakes hands
To be fair it’s not just the media, Reddit is posting nonstop about Wemby as well
It’s also funny that for over a decade it was players are too friendly with each other.
Then Wemby doesn’t shake hands after having a disappointing loss and now we have to keep hearing how bad it is.
How the fuck are people not understanding that shaking hands with your opponent doesn’t mean you’re friends with them. It’s precisely because swallowing your pride and giving respect to your competitors even when you’re personally frustrated or angry is difficult that people consider it admirable. It’s hilarious that people trying to defend this are acting like it’s some new expectation instead of pretty much the norm in most forms of organized competition basically throughout all history. They didn’t do it fine but don’t pretend it’s because they’re such intense competitors, they were angry and embarrassed it is what it is
redditors trying to be obtuse is an internet classic
Exactly. Having read all the discourse over the past week, it’s concerning the number of people who are encouraging this kind of behavior or maladjusted to the point of not being able to tell the difference. No one is asking them to be friends and a handshake does not equal friendship. I don’t like everyone I work with but I keep it cordial and keep it moving. NBA players are just that, colleagues but maintain mutual respect for also being competitors. Keep it professional and that’s the end of it. No one is asking for them to be at each others weddings
It’s also very telling the number of talking heads that are championing this kind of behavior are not exactly the type of people you want to be around: Isiah Thomas, Keyon Martin and Kendrick Perkins. Be graceful in victory and defeat and others will treat you in kind.
I appreciate that Wemby (probably) does not care, but it absolutely hurts his image. Jordan was far from squeaky-clean, but his image was and that was easy for the masses to digest
With the amount of people so vocally opposed to all the players being friends and dapping each other up all the time, I think plenty of people are happy with the way Wemby acts. Him not shaking their hand doesnt really move the needle for me in either direction.
I cant believe fans care about his “image” the only thing he and fans should care about is winning. Unless its off the court stuff which I doubt will be a problem with the giant that is in bed by 10
Wemby cares about his image. He wants to be the face of the league and I actually like that he wants the responsibility. But it comes with expectations.
the only thing he and fans should care about is winning.
Yeah because OKC are super popular after winning 2025… Oh wait they are widely hated for their playstyle which hurt their image.
im sure the fans would trade a championship for a better image
I like that he said everything during the game was fair because Jose definitely did try to give Wemby a sharpshooter at some point.
Fair game, given Wemby’s headlock, or the Brunson neck toss, neither called a foul. And of course, the refs were in the WWE spirit.
Maybe you haven’t watched in a while, but wwe spirit nowadays is a commercial break
Haven’t seen so much discussion about a player not shaking hands since Tom Brady refused to do it after losing to nick foles
That’s ny winning the title and there’s nothing much to talk about till the draft
I think there’s so much to talk about now. But that’s just me 😂
I mean team USA soccer is 3-0. That’s pretty cool.
Also Knicks are champs my man!!
They’re really dragging nothing
lol man he got asked sorry the answer is upsetting to people who can’t bear to hear a negative word about wemby
yeah i get the online discourse has been dragged out but i dont know why people act like after a week the knicks players should just only speak about wemby in a complementary way
95% of these people have never played a competitive sport, so respecting the game means nothing to them.
its not just sports
you shake hands or fist bump after competitive video games and TCGs like Magic and Yugioh
its just pure shut-ins who never leave their keyboards that are acting like this isnt the global sign of resepct for competition and the craft. has very little to do with the other person
the amount of ‘who cares’ is showing extreme bitchassedness.
people who dont care dont comment that
the recent ‘we still talkin bout this’ is extra funny
They are doing press tours and people are asking them questions. Are they just supposed to say no comment lol
They should say actually the spurs are a better team than us, i can understand how upsetting it must have been to them for us to win through sheer luck, please please don’t say anything bad about them it would break our hearts
Yes they are the ones asking themselves these questions
People got mad at Wemby when he stated his case for MVP when all he was doing was answering a reporters question
i mean, people like good sportsmanship.
it makes sense that it keeps coming up so soon after the win, i think. everyone on the knicks is doing media tours and there’s only so many questions, it makes sense they’d keep asking about one of the stories from the end
People still talking about this? Lmaooo
It was only a week ago?
It’s proof that Wemby is the Face of the League. He’s getting just as much coverage as the damn Knicks
Tbf we got a lot of coverage even when we suck.
The Spurs are not the media market NY is. We weren’t really talked about once we started sucking
It’s just the last notably arguably objectionable thing Wemby happened to have demarcated himself by in otherwise marked by a string of notably arguably objectionable courses of action throughout the playoffs and finals. It ain’t all that deep. I’m not even sure why such a point could even be one of pride, that conceiving him to be the face of the league and only having negative things in which to direct any discourse towards him within, is that of being a bit meh.
Didn’t care they didn’t shake hands after the game.
I did care that I didn’t see a Spur congratulate the Knicks and gave them respect in the pressers.
Did Wemby not give Brunson his flowers?
He did
He effusively did
It’s never good enough for the insufferable.
What did he say? I never saw it
That Brunson’s composure and control of the entire game (not just 3 quarters) is an example for him to follow. Not sure what Knicks fans expected him to say beside that…
It was good enough for me. Wemby has praised the Knicks before this as well when they had battled during the cup championship and I believe a Christmas game. He’ll be back stronger and better.
Though, I would also like to hear him speak on the concussion protocol. I do remember him saying he will speak about this after the season is done.
He did but that doesn’t follow the plotline people are trying to make a big deal of
Yeah, he did it in French
He did, he also gave credit to the Knicks team as a whole for their play, but people are determined to circlejerk and dogpile as much as possible so people will ignore all of that and instead focus on quotes they can misrepresent and take the context out of.
This sub has been on one of the most reactionary arcs I’ve ever seen
Wasn’t wembys response in French pretty much talking about how good Brunson is as a player and leader?
Yeah he pretty much said Brunson knew how to control the game. That’s a pretty big sign of respect in my opinion lmao
Tbf it was a little more specific than that, he was saying how he needs to be like Brunson and be in control of the entire game
“I need to be more like him” is probably one of the biggest compliments I can imagine from one great player to another.
It was, but that doesn’t fit people’s narrative
You didn’t listen to them then
People just want to complain lol
Because you didn’t see it in clips doesn’t mean it didn’t happen
I gotta give Fox mad credit.
He received so much criticism, but he came to the Knicks locker room after the Game 5 win to give Mike Brown his flowers. Mad respect.
People also forget he had a bum ankle since the Timberwolves series
If we want to be absolutely real, Fox is usually the fastest man on the court. OG was probably able to catch and get the block because Fox wasn’t as quick after the ankle injury.
I don’t think it’s a huge deal but I think it’s weird for people to act like it’s out of the ordinary to note the cumulative effect of their behavior on the perception of a lot of casual fans (not even mentioning the talking heads who make a living off these sorts of ‘controversies’). Real talk I think they are a young team and probably will learn from this because this discourse is annoying and probably not what any of them would prefer
Dude, who gives a shit?
Shaking hands after the game win or loss is a universal sign of sportsmanship and respect that you’re taught from a young age if you compete in any type of sports. It doesn’t make Wemby and the rest of the Spurs who didn’t shake hands bad people obviously but it definitely isn’t the greatest look especially when you consider how ramped up their competitiveness was inside the games/press conferences during the series. It definitely makes sense that some players on the Knicks would take exception to it.
Yeah, the “grown men don’t need to shake hands” comments are really telling on themselves. Grown men can swallow their pride and congratulate their opponent. It’s the immature young men who are too deep into their feelings to do that.
To be clear, it’s forgivable. I’m not gonna hold it against Wemby or the rest of the Spurs. But you’re not a big tough adult because you stormed off the court after losing. You’re more like a teenager (and in Wemby’s case, he is indeed closer to being a teen than a fully matured adult).
Because you’re a Bron fan. You’ve seen the other side of it, too. You know that anyone pretending this isn’t a thing is major bullshit.
Meanwhile Anthony Edwards did but did that to early 🤣
That one was so funny like i was dying laughing
I’ll get the excuses out of the way now.
Spurs are 22 and emotional, we can’t criticize them at all!
As a teacher, this is both something you can criticize and a *completely reasonable explanation*
It does not excuse the behavior and you would like to see it corrected in a similar circumstance. But it’s also completely normal and not unexpected.
Part of maturation is understanding the world has nuance.
Yeah I don’t think it’s actually an indictment of their character, i find it odd that people are acting like it’s outrageous for them to criticized for it when most players who do this do receive criticism for it historically
I’d say give them grace. They should be criticized, and they have plenty of opportunity to grow and learn; Wemby may be the face of the league one day. We all know that LeBron had to take his lumps and be a villain for a while. So, bad look, but you live and learn. Be better today than you were yesterday.
Sure but do we have to litigate it over and over again for the entire offseason. Like who actually cares they all get paid tens of millions to do this
This story is so fucking stupid
Flair checks out lol
Okay, this story is so fucking stupid.
Flair continues to check out
Replace the two teams with any other teams in the world and it would still be fucking stupid.
He is right though. Grown ass men do not need to shake hands lmao
Grown ass men don’t have to do a lot of things. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good lol
Babies don’t shake hands, grown ass men do
were you never taught good sportsmanship?
Why do yall need the spurs to suck the Knicks players dicks? Why can’t yall just enjoy the win instead of crying about wemby and the spurs. It’s wild to me
You’re all lying so much you would absolutely be making a meal out of this if the Knicks lost and acted this way
This is the big elephant in the room tbh. No one will be complaining how much attention is paid to it at our expense, either.
Love the double standards going on around here.
Can’t dare disparage the golden boy here
shaking hands is suckin dicks now
man we are cooked
Lmao fr basic respect is sucking dicks now is fucking insane
Is the concept of sportsmanship foreign to you? If kids in little leagues or AAU can shake hands and congratulate their opponents, a 22 year old can too.
It’s pretty fucking weird.
the draft cannot come faster lol, this is such a tiresome discourse
Idk why anyone is defending the spurs here. What they did is somewhat disrespectful and pathetic. They behaved like sore losers so it’s fair to criticize and make fun of them now. It’s like when Dilon Brooks talked trash and then disappeared after he lost to the lakers. Similar vibes
Yeah, and look at it from Alvarado’s perspective. You and your team are going up against 10 or so of some of the only people in the world that are as great at the game you play. Go over and shake hands.
Crying about other people crying over the handshakes is *chefs kiss*
Yeah that’s the part I don’t understand if you don’t care that’s fine but it’s a bit silly to demand that everyone else not react to it especially since historically this is a thing which people tend to notice - it’s not like this is the first team to ever face this criticism
Ok lol
Who cares
People act like it’s nothing but it’s clearly something. It’s a basic sign of sportsmanship. The same people that get pressed about scoring when the games over, are acting like it’s no big deal that the losing team didn’t shake the winning teams hand after the game, didn’t give them any credit at the presser etc
Jordan specifically spoke on it in the last dance, and I know Jordan’s petty but the cold truth is that stuff sticks with you. People will remember how you move.
If you lack grace and class they notice, and this spurs team that showed so much grit to get to the finals, especially Wemby, made themselves look bad by not performing a simple gesture
I couldn’t care less about this. It’s a personal decision and they made it. They were also prob embarrassed after asserting they’ll def win the game and series. It’s fine
When he mushed Jalen tho
For those who don’t remember: Klay Thompson left the court without shaking hands after losing in 2016, and he was roundly criticized for it. This kind of attention, deserved or not, is not unprecedented.
Really wonder if people would be defending it the same way if the Knicks had done the same if they lost
This is a nothingburger, let’s just move on
Different sports but I’ve seen multiple QBs after losing the Super Bowl not shake hands with the opposing QB.
NBA fans are soft af, this ain’t a big deal lmfao, I do think Wemby ended up looking like a clown this series tho because of his on the court antics, but this is a massive nothing burger.
It’s seen as unsportsmanlike in other sports as well
This doesn’t matter.
Spurs fans mad their team was cocky and sore losers lol, he’s only 22! What they did was not the norm so people feel a certain way sucks to suck
People are acting like 22 is the same as being 5 or something.
In a league that reveres rapists and abusers, are you really surprised people would defend poor sportsmanship and arrogance?
ITT: dozens of people taking the time to type out comments just to show how much they really don’t care you guys okay lmao
It’s embarrassing.
Sportsmanship is a thing
Some of you guys are babying the Spurs so much. First of all, the Knicks are being asked about it. That’s not their fault. Second, you’re going yo expect all sorts of things related to the finals from them considering that they won. You guys are taking select moments and getting outraged acting like it’s all they’re talking about. Jose literally compliments Wemby in the clip. And is ot so crazy that a team views their opponent as an opponent 🤯
Just add it to the receipts, people will continue to deny everything.
Can’t disparage the golden boy on here lol
Aight aight I mean as much as I’m enjoying all this and ik he was asked the question so ofc he’s gonna give his answer but can we all stop focusing on the damn handshakes lmao it’s been a week now.
I’m a Spurs fan so I’m biased, but if this ain’t the most baby shit drama I’ve ever seen man.
Can we just accept that Wemby is young and acted a little immature and the Knicks deserved to win and move the fuck on! The drama NBA fans/media obsess over is exhausting
Tbh I dont blame the players. They getting asked these questions by these NY media heads that can’t let the Wemby shit go.
it’s been like a week and we’re still on this lol
dudes just lost four of the biggest games of their lives. not going to fault them for needing to peace the fuck out of there with emotions they were probably feeling.
just enjoy celebrating with your team
I think you can chalk that up to maturity…he’ll learn soon enough about humility and sportsmanship
jose was asked a question on the breakfast club and he chose to keep it real. this is what we do in NY. these comments are mad salty like are yall really that pressed?
To everyone that doesn’t understand why everyone keeps bringing up Wemby not shaking hands (I myself found it unexpected but not crazy). Anyways…
This man was hanging out with monks and the media build him up to as the 2nd coming of Superman, Luke Skywalker, or Aang the Last Airbender.
But he carried himself more like Darth Vader.
Hanging with monks dont mean shit. We have tv pastors who are literally the most despicable pieces of shit. Hanging out with Joel Olsteen doesnt make you a better person.
That’s true but people love to romanticize; they need archetypes.
Spurs vs Knicks is 100% a matchup for Christmas Day
The same people who are excusing wemby and the spurs for this were probably the same ones shooting down everyone for overreacting on how they celebrated like they just won the championship by beating the thunder and how that “didn’t mean anything either”
Keep excusing his behavior.
spurs beg for awards they don’t deserve: “ugh, the reporters are obviously asking questions they’re just answering? what u want them to be quiet?”
knicks questioning why spurs are the only team in their run to not shake hands: “they’re dragging it severely, it’s not that serious”
Yeah dawg I’m done I do wish he shook hands but it ain’t that serious anymore.
r/clipsthatendtoosoon
This is getting tiresome. Wemby went from the next superstar to hated, overnight.
Same shit happened to LeBron at 22. And shows how most of the NBA fanbase are just bandwagon fans. Wemby is competitive as hell. Which makes him as good as he is, and also sometimes more emotional than he should.
But some fat bastards sitting on the couch criticising him because it makes them feel better about their shitty lives is just cringe.
We gonna hear about Handshake Gate until next season starts aren’t we..
lol alvarado keeping it real… wemby’s too competitive to fake the nice guy act and honestly i respect that more
Wemby went from being loved to being the most hated guy after the finals, his pr team is gonna have to work overtime to fix his image this upcoming season
Why did it stop there? It was just getting good
Why we crying about this man lol who gives a shit
The thing that stood out to me is how fast homie got down the tunnel.
Bro I’ve never seen a championship winning team bitch more about a squad they thoroughly beat 4-1. This didn’t even go to game 7 and the spurs choked every game away. Why are they still bitching
As great as he is, he’s still immature. A sore loser.
Why would Wemby want to shake hands with someone playing dirty against him?
