The Raptors Desperately Trying To Trade Up For Giannis In The 2013 Draft
dang the price to move up from 16 to 13 was only 2 2nds back then, thats wild
Wait until you see what the Colangelo Suns did in the 2000s. Trading away (late) firsts for cash considerations.
Pretty sure that was a Sarver directive.
The new Blazers owner might bring that back, dude seems like a real cheap ass.
If BC was a GM today he’d try selling FRPs on Facebook Marketplace.
He did not care about picks at all
Find a new slant
Monte also did this in the 2020s lol
draft culture in sports used to be very very different, draft picks were extremely sacred for a very long time
I mean it’s not that different nowadays? Wizards moved up with 2 seconds in the 2023 Draft and I’m pretty sure the Thunder did something like packaging their first with a second or two in either 24 or 25. Also the Grizzlies picked up some seconds moving back in the 2022 Draft. Moving up 2-4 spots isn’t usually too expensive unless youre in the bottom 10 of the first round.
Except in Phoenix where Sarver just kept selling FRPs. Basically gifted Deng to the Bulls, for example.
To be fair, that draft was expected to be pretty weak and it was. Thats probably why it didn’t cost a ton to move up. You could probably see similar things happening in next year’s or 2028’s draft too. Those are the next two weak drafts.
Hence why Silver decided to start his draft reform pilot now, because no team is going to be tanking violently for those 2 weak classes, thus making it look like he did something
There’s still a tiny part of me that hopes we somehow end up keeping him, but I’m mostly just trying to live by the “smile because it happened mindset” at this point.
10 years ago, you could barely find any Bucks gear in a department store. There would be, like, one rack of generic t-shirts hidden amongst all the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers gear.
There’s literally an entire new part of downtown that has been redeveloped in the last eight years.
No matter how he exits or what happens after, the statue had better happen.
MVP in a small market ends the same every time. Just enjoy the ring.
Literally couldn’t have asked for more if you’re a Bucks fan
You guys won your chip, and in very memorable fashion. I liked watching your run and am still awed by Giannis’ performance.
Oh the statue is happening.
We’re happy for you guys and I do hope he stays
Highly recommend listening to Woj’s podcast on Giannis and Atlanta. His first trip to America was Atlanta. We tried to keep it secret we were interested in him. Still makes me mad that we didn’t try & move up for him.
Did you hear Jeff Teague story on this? Apparently the hawks were hiding him in a basement and someone from the hawks got fired and got hired by the bucks and he told the bucks about how the hawks plan to get Giannis
Larry Drew. That MFer got back at us for firing him lol. Had the Bucks take Giannis at 15, Hawks were at 17.
(I do wonder if Raptors try to move to 16 and grab him if Bucks passed)
And then they reached for Bruno Caboclo a couple years later to try and recreate him
Legend has it that he’s still two years away from being two years away.
We missed on Giannis and decided to do nothing but draft tall lanky wings for the next half decade (turned out okay)
I’d say it worked out
Donnie: This Giannis kid is really good we should draft him.
Cuban: Nah let’s save 0.5 million dollar a year and take 5’10 point guard so we could pretend Dwight is joining us.
And we were desperately trying to trade back because Cuban wanted to save every penny to chase Dwight Howard.
imagine how different the league would be if this went through. Giannis with Masai’s development program… scary thought. still wild Milwaukee took a chance on a guy nobody really knew about
I mean he was projected to be a 12-16th pick with some mocks having him in the top 10.
It wasn’t that no one knew about him it was just a huge boom or bust type deal
yeah that’s fair — he wasn’t totally unknown. honestly that era of draft scouting was wild, taking a guy that raw at 15th still took guts from Milwaukee
sounds like he could’ve had Giannis if he tried hard enough but the master trader didn’t want to give up a real asset
