Back When LeBron James Was Asked If It Bothers Him That People Take Joy In His Failure: “Absolutely not. At the end of the day they gotta wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they before they woke up today. “
Y’all broke and I am not
I think he’s more so saying haters are just as miserable as they were before
It’s not so hard to imply a lot with one pithy phrase
One point isn’t just one point. I’ll explain later.
Yeah this is a huge distinction. People tried to always pass this off as Lebron making fun of poor people. He specifically mocking people who are “finding joy in” him failing. As far as I’m concerned, you absolutely have full licence to stunt, by any means necessary, on people who are rooting for your downfall.
Haters are always gonna hate on something. It’s what they do 🤷♂️
Fairs bron fairs
LeBron when he went to Miami was told to stfu by his publicists and he largely did. Then he let it out for the Finals and it cost him. That 2nd season was when he actually shut the hell up and got to work.
LeBron at Cleveland, if there’s any folks here that still remember that, was a machine for the dumbest statements ever. High IQ, eidetic memory, whatever, if social media was any bigger back then he would’ve been a meme.
This is shades of that LeBron, although not that close. But it’s right up the alley
And he still very obviously cares way too Much about what we think.
He caught flack for saying this but it was the absolute truth. Almost like a 4th wall type deal, because people are miserable as shit. So seeing others lose makes them feel less of a loser
Hell i wish he had gone further. Go full Kenny Powers and tell the fans off. Embrace being the bad guy.
I think he tried to be the bad guy first year with Miami. But it just wasnt in him. Bron’s a natural good guy. and he is awesome for that.
See, I agree. But thats why i think he should have gone cartoonishly evil with it (not actually despicable). Beating up mascots. Insulting towns. Wearing fur coats.
Locking out a decade of East teams from the finals isn’t villainous enough?
He’s been shitting all over small markets recently so he’s got that down lol
Mask LeBron was iconic.
Mask LeBron was one game lol
That’s exactly what I got out of it and everyone just reads it as him calling people broke lol
He was asked how he feels about people who enjoy seeing him fail. This was the appropriate response lol
Probably too focused on what he’s wearing lol
I was a freshman in college when this happened and I was kinda anti LeBron and happy they lost. When I heard this it did hit me that it’s silly to put too much of my happiness into a game that really has no effect on my wellbeing. Then like a year later I got into gambling on sports and never really looked at them the same again.
How come you didn’t look at sports the same after you got into gambling?
Preach. I catch episodes of hoarders when I don’t wanna clean the house so feel like less of a loser. Can confirm the misery and self-loathing.
I always find it hilarious that a lot of ppl in here love saying things like a certain player, usually being Doncic, Chris Paul, Harden, Embiid, or someone, is not a winner, that they don’t contribute to championship basketball. Sharing memes about Kats and Wiggins as if they are suddenly better winner than Butler. lol.
Nothing wrong with what he said at all. He’s 100% correct.
Misery loves company
That’s the sort of stuff Charles Barkley says all the time, and the media lap it up. But to be fair Chuck says it in a funny way; e.g. when commenting on someone’s tweet about a player
> “That’s why we’re excited to see him do well. You just sit at home in your grandma’s basement with your drawers on… typing on your damn keyboard… cookie crumbs on your stomach…”
Definitely read that in his voice 😂
Thouu chuck prolly would’ve said “gran momma” not “grandma” 😂
Serves me right for also reading it in his voice to nitpick like a ☝️🤓
You can hear it too on YouTube. He said something like that in the past 🤣
That’s cos it’s a direct quote lmao
Chuck is also the guy saying they make millions and doing fan service is apart of their job. He’s always been the most appreciative to fans
But he also threw a guy through a window for talking shit. Lol Charles is layered
Except for the first 50 years of his life…
He ain’t no role model
yeah he living in the rich people neighborhood.
and the bank manager better be standing up when he walks in the door.
I think the bank manager gives him his clothes in the commercial
That’s why Chuck is the best. If you’re gonna roast someone, don’t hold back.
“shut the hell up we’re pulling for Markelle Fultz”
“what are they wearin Chuck?” always makes me laugh when Shaq tells him to repeat his joke
I love SNL episodes he hosted. He’s not great at acting but is still super funny. He’s the best athlete host imo.
one of the greatest and most real post game interviews ever lmao. iconic for all the good reasons 😭
This is the realest LeBron has ever kept it. He cut a lot of people deep that night.
and Skip still hasn’t shut up
He cut a lot of people deep that night.
Case in point: all the people in this thread that are offended by the quote, who all coincidentally have post histories showing they are exactly the miserable losers he was talking about.
[deleted]
There’s a difference between being asked about your feelings in a press conference and dunking on random nobodies on twitter
Let Wemby say it now
Nah,… see yall never
the difference is kd says these things all the time on twitter and his burner, he clearly wants people talking shit with him
You’re not supposed to say it every other week, that’s probably why he doesn’t get the support lol
Because as much as KD is disliked and disrespected, he was never HATED like Lebron was/is, minus maybe the years he was in GS. But even then he had plenty of Lebron haters like Skip Bayless just happy that he was guaranteeing Lebron wasnt getting more rings during those years.
Since Lebron’s peak hate years he has done a lot in the post season to garner respect even from haters, which KD just hasnt
history written again
Even if he went on to never win a ring this whole speech is valid
Yep. Copy and paste this shit in a Carmelo Anthony’s presser and still remains 100% valid.
True, but he won 4 and Kd robbed him of at least one more.
Yeah he then went on to make the finals 8 of the next 9 years and won 4 rings… he would’ve won probably only more if he didn’t go against the KD warriors
Lmao it’s harsh as fuck but honestly it is pretty pathetic how many people take joy in hating on pro athletes vs celebrating a win.
That being said, fuck the Thunder and SGA.
There’s a difference between *hating* a team and actually having hatred.
The closest I ever got to that line was KD with the warriors and I was probably an insane person in hindsight for how mad I got.
Yeah, I am a giant hater when it comes to NBA but its never personal lol. Even in 2011-2015 when I despised Lebron I wouldve still been stoked/starstruck if I got to meet him lmao
I think hating someone who ruined the future of your franchise from inside is pretty valid compared to hating a different team from your own. Like the people hating thunder for being dominant are lame as hell. But if anyone in Dallas hates nico for essentially breaking what should have been a huge part of their entertainment for the next decade is super valid. Kd leaving falls under this
Fuck Nico
I too have always found schadenfreude to be pretty fucking pathetic. I think it has to speak to some inner unresolved misery.
If I’m being real I think rooting against a rival is fun and just a normal part of being a fan.
I sports hated the Heatles and very much wish I could have continued seeing them be a “rival” of that Drose Bulls team because it could have been special imo. But when we ceased to be competitive that was that.
I think there are people though that legit just root against other people being happy and that’s unhealthy for sure.
This is how it’s supposed to be.
I’m a Blue Jays fan, and hate the Dodgers. I legit cried after the world series last year. I have never been mad at a Dodgers player for one second, and I don’t even care how they’re doing this year. I just wanna see the Jays win and have fun. Hating players is not healthy.
Some people would have gotten schadenfreude if LeBron lost custody of his kids back then lol. But yes 100% anyone conflating that with a fan rooting against a player/team is misunderstanding a big part of sports culture.
You had me in the first half. 👀
Rent free
what beef does a bulls fan have with the thunder, much less shai lol
Worry about making the playoffs.
“They gotta get back to the real world at some point” truer words have never been spoken
He said touch grass for the kids basically
Thanks to social media, they don’t anymore
Where’s the lie?
If you feel triggered by what he said he’s talking about you 😭
damnnnnnn
He’s legit talking about people like u/SGA_owns_LeFraud and it still rings true 10 years later lmao
But what if I’m Bill Gates and I’m hating on Lebron??? /s
The only legit problem I could see with this is the implication that every person criticizing LeBron was only doing so because they’re unhappy and pathetic
I don’t think that’s what he’s saying (and it is true for a part of the fanbase) but I don’t think it’d be crazy to misinterpret it like that if you were a casual rooting against him
how much money i should have to be hate lebron?
Reminds me of that Green Goblin quote in Spider-Man
“You know, the crowd… they love a hero. But what they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail, fall, die trying.”
Its why Wemby losing these finals was a better long-term storyline for the NBA, especially with how they choked.
But man, Wemby speedran this process in a way I’ve never seen. First playoff run, first season over .500 and now he’s already at the “hero fails’ part of the arc.
Wemby and the Spurs were God’s chosen against OKC. Then in the next series they became the literal devil. People gotta have their villains I guess.
Even Spurs fan switched up on the Spurs so fast
I’m a big Spurs fan and I was extremely happy with how far we got, given we had a 7% chance to just reach the playoffs
But so many “fans” were just shitting on us in the spurs subreddit. People are miserable
Winning one playoff series this year would have been a massive success and we won three
My only takeaway for the spurs from the finals is that this is that Dylan Harper has nowhere to go but up from where he’s already at and that’s fucking crazy.
He got so much hate for this back in the day lol
It’s crazy how that whole era of Bron/the Heatles has become glazed now. I wonder if that’s due to people actually turning around, or more so due to youngsters/Bron stans changing the narrative.
Young people imo. Same as the Star Wars prequels
What a callout. It’s kinda the same timeline too; prequel memes started getting big like 11-13 years after release of Revenge of the Sith between like 2014 and 2016. We are 12 years post Heatles.
Yup, the people that idolized him have a bigger voice on social media now and the old heads are either changing their tune to stay relevant or being drowned out by the new age.
Now if only these same voices would go out and vote but that’s another story
Them haters felt attacked for how true those words are.
Yeah, I remember that. I just watched this video again for the first time since then and I kept waiting for him to say something worse. I forgot this was all he said it seems so tame now.
Needs to be the opening of his documentary.
that would go hard asf
Lebron: Yall are broke and still work nine to five’s HAHAHAHAHAH. Fucking poors
I think he’s referring to people being so miserable that they find joy in hating
So basically he is talking about /r/nba?
Some basketball “ fans” enjoy shitting on guys more then the actually playing or watching the sport themselves. So he absolutely is but this sub is not the only culprit.
That’s why you see so many people in this thread getting salty
100% this
Except thats not what he said. You only interpreted it that way because you’re projecting you’re own insecurities.
It’s a stupid fucking question. He just lost the finals and he has to answer this type of question. Hes just answering it without going crazy. This is a rage bait question from the reporter.
Man you outed yourself huh?
I dont think he mentioned money. His quote is open for interpretation but thats a reach
With regard to the context of the dumbass question asked the response is: yeah fair lol.
ya i always find it funny when people talk shit to athletes. like the crazy shit. bc their life is most likely thousands of times better than yours. at the end of the day these are people too and should be respected like people. and don’t bring their families into it
What blows my mind even more than that is us agonizing on behalf of athletes. You have people who don’t know how they’re gonna pay rent next month, crying that so and so millionaire can’t get on a good team that they deserve or can’t get the whistles in their favor to maybe win the championship that they “deserve”.
Dude we’re talking about sports here, the whole system is literally designed for people to talk shit to each other. I don’t care that an athlete is Uber wealthy and has a better life than mine, hell I hope that they would.
But if your rebuttal to having a bad game or series is “I make more money than you”, that’s weak.
This comment wasn’t really about money
Imagine if Fox said the same thing after the Finals
Honestly, not even 0% joking, it’d have been an epically hilarious callback and just as true. He’d catch a ton of shit too and he’d be exactly equally as correct.
But the LeBron truthers in the thread rewriting the narrative around this wouldn’t be so kind to Fox lol
They’d be saying how bad he played
Which is the same thing folks were saying back then
I think the hate towards Bron is different than Fox though. With LeBron, it was the Cleveland fans that were mad at him for leaving and wanted to see him fail as well as people that thought him leaving Cleveland was a weak move. With Fox, it’s his own fans that hate how he performed in the Finals while most people are just clowning on him rather than outright hating on him. If Fox said this it wouldn’t make him look any better since dissing your own fanbase after you put up a weak performance in the Finals doesn’t really help matters.
Reminds me of myspace Tom’s old tweet / clapback.
Myspace Tom: something about instagram’s terms & service change
Random: says the guy that was not able to keep a social network alive
Myspace Tom: says the guy who sold myspace in 2005 for 580mil while you slave away hoping for a half-day off
Plenty of people are praising him for saying this in the thread and the message is real! But he got so much pushback when he said this. The amount of pressure and vitriol LeBron was facing was insane. while plenty of it was self induced, i’d have folded like a lawn chair haha
I feel this was one of the first times I remember that LeBron popped out with an answer that could blow off some steam while still being professional. He’s been in the game a long time just look how young he is here. 15 years ago
He won 3⁄5 championships. I’d love to go back and watch some of those games for the first time again.
4 chips*
I know. I meant 3 out of the next 5. Which looked good, 3-4 in the finals before KD slid over.
People only got mad about this response because it was accurate af
Don’t nearly all people including LeBron James have the same life when they went to bed and then woke up?
Shoutout people whose lives changed in their sleep.
I lost 72k in my sleep on polymarket because Pope Leo didn’t say the word love.
Yes but LeBron’s life is awesome
Some people go to bed hungry or can’t go to bed at all. It’s not the same.
I love my life and Lebron is still a bitch
Straight facts
Similarly his fans also wake up tomorrow with their same crappy lives
It goes both ways indeed, but would you rather be a miserable loser or an appreciative fan? It’s entertainment after all.
He called us broke in the nicest ways.
Not really a money statement though. People who find pleasure in others failure often are dissatisfied with their own lives and have little self worth.
It was definitely about money.
Lebron assuming that people who hate him treat it like a full time job lol.
It is literally some peoples job to hate him full time (skip)
Sometimes I will see some deranged hate tweet and get curious. I click their profile, only to see a wall of hate filled tweets as far as you can scroll. There really are ppl that spend all day schizoposting and retweeting the most insane shit as if any of this is really that deep…
He got so much hate for this lmao
And think about how much is changed with social media/hot take culture since this moment
how does LeBron look 40 here
I know it’ll sound childish, but this was actually the moment I officially stopped liking Lebron.
What he’s saying is accurate, but I just felt it was kind of a cheap shot to turn the mirror back at the fans rather than focus on how much he struggled during the series. Ultimately, fans drive revenue, and our narratives, stories, ticket sales etc all pay professional athletes - whether good or bad.
This was an unnecessary emotional move to sway things away from what actually occurred on the court.
I was on the Heat bandwagon those years, and he was definitely uncomfortable with how much hate they got all year. This always seemed a bit salty to me.
Heat fans didn’t wanna hear this either. He was criticized for how he cost D-Wade another ring and finals MVP lol
For some reason I remember this quote being worse than it was. If you boil it down he’s basically saying that LeBron choking has no lasting effect on anyone’s lives, which is true
That shit bothered/bothers him!
Mavs accomplished their goal
Fuck this flopping idiot
He was right then & he is right now.
We’re all idiots on the Internet. He’s a multi billion dollar athlete.
It’s very rare one can be both. And yes this is my campaign position for KD’s HoF candidacy.
LeBron “whatever the case may be, things of that nature” James
Is he suggesting that the only people who have shitty lives are the people who were against him? Because I bet a lot of people who root for him also have equally shitty lives.
So, everyone is supposed to root for LeBron! Can’t root for the other team or you’re a hater. SMH
i think this is an all time quote. Saying I’m somewhere you can’t be in without being trashy
To be fair a rich person could be hating on him and this statement could apply to him
But this also applies to his fans, I don’t know how this is a good comeback. He’s reminding his fans they are poor compared to him.
I love my life and still enjoy LeBron’s failures.
Yeah, if I was rich enough to go play Golf with my buddies in Scotland, have a mansion, and be able to do whatever the hell I want, I wouldn’t give a flying fuck about random strangers opinions either.
I’ll never know what it’s like being that rich, but I’d imagine it’s nice.
Meh. I hate watch LeBron losing all the time. Sports is entertainment after all. You could reverse this statement and instead make it into his staunchest, sycophantic fanatical supporters and it still rings true.
I simply move on with my day after he loses, entertainment having been quenched.
I don’t get how anyone would think he’s failing..He is in the NBA. 😂
I think hes actually underrated atp. Expectations met from day 1, AND he keeps a family and knows how to deal with fame and the press. Bravo sir.
I’m still happy he failed in Miami.
I forget about Brons hair. My man needs a trip to Turkey.
I’m a lebron hater but he was right about this
Or whatever the case may be
Aka Im rich af.
As someone who rooted against Lebron… he is the perfect bad guy to root against. It’s just entertainment and him losing was really entertaining.
Cant wait for Wemby to do this and call us broke AND short
Tbh most haters are miserable in real life. They hate on their job, they hate on others, they hate on the life they’re living, they hate themselves.
“I get paid a ton of money to play a sport and leveraged my privilege into a fortune”
The average person who is happy to see any NBA player fail is a fan of another team. It’s a sport. People are losing sight of that on all sides, and these rich people are just taking in substantial amounts of wealth either playing the sport or profiting from the image/ likeness of those that do. We give less to and expect more from people that literally build and support the communities we live in.
Comments like these from those with obscene amounts of wealth remind me how gross people can justify being for any number of reasons. And this idea that every hater is some dude living in their mom’s basement is weird, a deflection. Might as well just skip that entirely and brag about wealth immediately imo. Fuck it.
Somehow pretending that you don’t care and falling back to “I’m rich” when you quite honestly should not have that much money in the first place seems worse than the basement type of comment.
I don’t take joy in his failures, I want to call him the GOAT, but he clearly isn’t.
Not my fault. Take responsibility for once in your life LeBron and quit playing the victim.
Oh thats an old clip…Wonder though if he would say that again to the LA Laker fans
Is this the one where he stood up at the end wearing shorts with a purse-like bag. I’m not even hating but the comedic timing of it was amazing.
Bron obsessives out in full force in this thread, doing their best to defend the love of their lives. Truly embarrassing reading some of these comments…
What a poor sport. This is the moment I stopped rooting for him. Ordinary people show him mercy every day he shows his face in public. Be kind.
The irony of this is that all of his money comes from the fans and their attachment to the game. He doesn’t repair, transport, maintain, build, invent, discover or facilitate anything.
He isn’t talking solely about money
I don’t think it was ‘haters’ - it’s people that thought a dude commanding that salary who gave that performance was pretty awful. They’re not wrong, and it’s not personal.
Classic rich guy response
Didn’t he say something about flipping burgers lol
That’s… how it is for everyone big guy 😂
Narcissist who doesn’t care about people? What are the chances
Philosopher I guess
One of the cringest interviews the game has seen
You can tell her cares what the haters say lol
The defence he gets for this after bouncing to Miami after choking in Cleveland and then having a concert hyping them winning a million rings lmao. Crazy how the narrative completely flipped on the Miami years. Dude was always and continues to be a little bitch, just does a great job at spinning PR
Go back to your bum ass life losers
This is what won me over. Top tier quote
He’s right, I was still a loser when I woke up this morning
At 18 I thought this was such a POS comment. As an adult I get it, given its just a bunch of mfers on Twitter or something rooting for you to lose…
Damn that hairline tho
mj amd kobe would never
t3 most funniest moments in modern nba history
I’m having a great life and I’m a certified leaBron hater
So this was 15 years ago which means 15 years before that MJ was winning his 4th chip?
Puts into perspective how long Bron has been playing in that MJ retired 2 years later in 1998 while Lebron is still in the league.
I was so disappointed he didn’t go full villain arc after this.
He’s too much of a bitch to be a villain
This is the kind of thing you can only say once and he used it at the right opportunity
Go form a super team ,choke and have an all time WOAT finals performance then belittle anyone who has an opinion about it smfh that’s y’all goat
I miss nba players dressing this way
That’s post 2011 Finals
He ain’t wrong
But it’s also sports. Am I supposed to root for EVERYONE to win?
I have never wished ill on him in my life. But I will never root for him to win a game either. Unless he signs with the Warriors!!!! lol
who knew he was talking about Memphis all this time
I generally dislike Lebron for reasons I wont go into. But this one time I feel he cooked. If you got angry about this, he was talking exactly about you.
