They lucked out on getting someone like Brunson at 33. They got unlucky that no one in the planet could’ve predicted an undersized PG who was drafted at the age of 22 would’ve been a top 10 NBA player. 25 years old, year 4 averaging 16ppg, ok playmaker and ok at best defender and you think the guy was close to his ceiling.
They could have kept Brunson on a reasonable contract too. It’s not like they had to give him the max to retain him. That plus the other stuff Harrison did pre-Luka trade could have gotten them close if not all the way there.

Dirk was actually driving less by that point. Dirk in his 20s would regularly attack the paint and played more like a shooting guard in a forward’s body. Think proto-KD. It wasn’t until he started developing his post-game, and his signature shot, that he went to a new level and became harder to guard.
That’s what made him so lethal in that playoff run and Finals. Plus the determination, motivation, killer mentality, etc. to get the job done and get the monkey off his back.

Not a Shaq level unicorn, and he didn’t have a super high vert, but one of the fastest bigs up and down the court and elite change of direction.
In fact, he only won after he stopped driving as much and started focusing more on the nail and mid high post. In the previous few years, he had started getting contained by smaller, quicker, long limbed defenders when facing up (mainly Shawn Marion) and had to develop a counter.

I miss cheering for and watching this man play every day, and the crazy part is that I’m not even a German or American. I started following him in 2008 playing in the preolympic tournament and stuck around until the very end. After the Luka trade, these little moments with Dirk and the 2011 run are pretty much all I have left connecting me to the team.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty sure Flagg will be an amazing player, but damn, my passion for watching this team has diminished a lot over the last two years.
