[Windhorst] Trae Young is going to re-sign with the Wizards likely on a 3-year, very large contract.
“very large” = what the agent told him to say on air, it will be what everyone expected
You wouldn’t believe it. We got ourselves a very large contract today, no really. Many people are saying that this is the biggest contract that anyone has ever got. Can you believe that? It was a very successful contract we did with those guys and they said they had never seen anyone get a deal like me. They’re saying we won’t ever need to sign another player again because we have the best people, don’t we folks.
Shit, I am seeing the hand gestures in my head
What in the Trump am I reading here 😂😂😂
(Well played)
This hasn’t been funny in years.
I found it hilarious.
Idk, hard to laugh these days when he’s actively ruining the world beyond memes.
I laughed
like the Joker?
Triggered trumpsexual spotted 😬
Quite the opposite actually lol
I mean 3⁄120 is very large
the guy opted ouf of 49M so I hope so
I mean 3years 100-120M with a TO last year would be more money than that but thats a really team friendly contract even if its a PO for the last year.
I know 30 mil seems like a lot (it is) but its only 18% of the cap next year, thats pretty good for a starting PG who has All star protentional if he can get his floater back.
Even if they do like 42.5/40/35 ish its only 25% of the cap next year (wiz gotta spend it on somebody) and then it declines hard since it goes down and the cap goes up.
Trae isn’t sniffing all star level again
He was an all star and led the league in assists a year and a half ago, acting like he’s been washed is crazy.
He got to rehab all last season too and there isn’t a massive list of guards in the east that he’s going to have to compete with.
Right. Nobody not even the Wizards will overpay
it will be what everyone expected
Easy claim to make without defining “what everyone expected.”
Very large is exactly how I describe Windhorst
If he signs for above the vet min, his agents will throw a party.
you think he opted out of his player option to sign with the same team for the vet min?
You think his agents are advising he decline 1 year 49M for anything over 2M a year and celebrating because of it?
Unless he gets at least 100 million there will not be a celebration.
Use of “very large” scares the fuck out of me bro
You have to spend on somebody. It’s fine. No more tanking so any upgrade is a good one.
My friends is a Wizards fans and that’s exactly how he feels. He’s just happy they’ll actually try to be competitive.
Handing out huge contracts to Trae Young and/or Anthony Davis is not how you should actually try to be competitive though…
If it’s actually a huge contract, I hope the third year is at least a team option. I think the contract length is likely more important than the dollar amount.
It is when you have young players who need to see some success to take the next step.
Then trade AD or Trae as expirings
I understand the premise. I’m skeptical that those two players on big contracts will help the Wiz “see some success.”
Assuming that their expiring contracts have positive value is a big assumption.
The Wizards as the 7th or 8th seed is a success, IMO.
I didn’t say they would be good. My dude is just tired of being the worst.
I might rather renounce Young and offer a max to Reaves. Hell, I might rather reprise the Beal/Westbrook era.
Agent probably told him that
Windy just carrying some water for the agent here. Big trust me bro energy on that “very large” statement.
I don’t think Dawkins is going to do anything stupid at this point. It should be about what has been rumored all along. Probably around 3yr/120.
Exactly. Windy won’t be wrong no matter what the Wizards offer.
If it was a max he would have said max, I think the 120⁄3 reported earlier should be about right and I’m fine with that.
Yeah, that’s very fair both sides. I’m really intrigued to see what the Wizards can do next year.
“Large enough for him to opt out of $48.5m next year”
Contract will be done or tradeable when it matters
Its probably structured so when its done we can start extending the young guys if they are worth it.
For me, any NBA guaranteed contract is very large, so maybe he’s signing for the MLE. That would be an insane amount of money (to me)
Second apron speedrun
Itll be fine for now
3⁄120?
Or are we talking about 3⁄150?
50 mil a year for trae youngs true shooting percentages is insanely spooky even accounting for how good his play making is
40million isn’t much better in my mind but at least thats a 10million paycut for this upcoming year
If all the time off this year helps restore his quickness back to ‘21-‘22 levels then 50 mil is a good deal. His achilles has been bothering him for the last 2.5 years and he’s continued to play through it. Plus having him on the floor will get the team organized. His bbiq is gonna be super helpful
3⁄120 makes sense. Take a paycut but the team stretches it over 3 years.
He is guaranteed \(49 million next season. What could he get in free agency over the next 2 years? Probably 2 years \)60 million at the most?
So 3 years $110 million sounds like a good deal to me, especially if it is declining
Anything higher than 3⁄120 is scary
wasn’t worried for a minute. He WANTED to be here. It’s a phenomenal fit being a playmaker surrounded by all these young athletes (including the #1 pick) and potentially AD in a watered down East.
no contender can flat out sign him, anyone who wanted him last year could’ve had him for peanuts, Trae orchestrated himself here for a trade destination, anyone playing on a PO takes a gigantic risk toward their next contract, and he gets more security/comfort in setting up shop here long term.
since the day he arrived the organization was putting out the red carpet for him: hyping up his return, plastering him all over social media, giving him #3, and immediately printing his jersey for the team store. Meanwhile on Trae’s side he’s on podcasts talking about how excited he is to be with this group, reports of him trying to convince AD to buy in behind the scenes, and him realizing he’s a natural fit here on the roster.
knew it would all work out
Playins gonna be a dog fight next year fosho
How is the east watered down when the Knicks just won the finals
And Cavs winning analytically
I mean they swept their way there so they weren’t exactly troubled too much by the Eastern Conference…
They weren’t troubled by any team really.
East next year should be relatively strong especially if the Celtics make a few or potentially major moves. Indy should be relevant too with their best player coming back. Pistons likely improve (maybe not record wise).
The Spurs troubled them, they just choked their big leads away every single damn time.
Knicks were a great team and nobody’s discrediting what they did, but next year their roster looks vastly different as they approach the second apron. Cleveland and Detroit unveiled themselves as paper tigers in the playoffs. Boston will always be a factor but what happens if they don’t land Giannis and if they move off of Jaylen Brown too?
From there, it’s just a collection of mediocrity: Philly, Orlando, Atlanta, Miami, Toronto, Indy (Hali off the Achilles), Chicago, Charlotte. Milwaukee loses Giannis, Nets still rebuilding. There’s not one team that strikes fear into you out East. I get the draft and FA and trades haven’t happened yet, but as of today before anyone emerges, this isn’t a gauntlet of a conference by any stretch of the imagination.
get out of here with that Indy slander
Look at who the Knicks played to get there
Yeah woulda been easier if we played yall
I have bad news about this ‘working out’
Era of the small guard is here
3 years
So, short-term Trae sticks around with Davis and #1 to help get the fanbase re-engaged, and then he’s tradeable salary in a couple of years when it’s (hopefully) time to roll.
Genuinely think this outcome isn’t too unlikely. And if we’re in the finals in two years complaining about what a liability Trae is, I’ll be too over the moon about how absurdly unrealistic even getting there ever was for us lol.
These dudes are the vets we need to learn how to become contenders. Any boost on the timeline is a plus.
Yeah basically how I feel about Fox
If they pick Peterson with the #1 that’s likely, as long as they don’t overpay now
Can we know the amounts then
Probably a 3yr 120m deal, that’s been the rumor for a while, it’ll be front loaded, so 45/45/30 or something
e: actually it’s what the commenter below me said, not 45/45/30
Can’t front load like that. With Bird Rights, the max increase/decrease is 8% of the base year salary.
For a 3/\(120, the widest front loaded deal would be \)43.5/40/36.5
Thanks
That would still be pretty nice. This year it’s absolutely no issue at all. Next year and the one after we start having tough extension conversations. Either way, it works without a massive amount of pain for us, as long as his agent hasn’t found a team dumb enough to drive up the price.
The thing is too the caps gotten so large that a number like that seems much crazier than it is.
He’d be ~25% of the cap next year with it declining hard every year since the money is going down and the cap is going up. Thats a pretty good deal for a starting PG with all star potential if he can get back to what he was.
Even if it’s more money, as long as it’s structured like that I think the it’s a win for the Wizards. Got all this space cause of the rookie deals anyway so may as well use it and paying him sub-40mil in 2 years will look good when the cap will probably be approaching 200mil
I don’t think you can descend that rapidly so it’d have to be like 45/40/35 and maybe not even that steeply is allowed.
The most a contract can descend year after year is 8%. Same amount it can increase
Maybe you’re right, idk the contract rules if there are any.
Think the most you can do is 45⁄41.4⁄37.8 or something close to that, 8 percent is the maximum decrease cap last time I checked.
Start the contract a bit lower than 45 to get to 120.
Good for both sides man. Wizards get a certified winner and leader, Young gets rewarded with a great contract for all the video game numbers he’s put up through the years. Legitimately rooting for the wizards next year
Is he a certified winner?
He’s missed the playoffs in 5 out of 8 seasons in the NBA.
He’s advanced past the 1st round one time in 8 years.
Omg he’s not a Celtic
Are Wizards’ fans happy with this?
I feel like ultimately AD and Young dont make any sense after you guys got the 1st pick.
Still gotta have talent around the 1st pick
All depends what the numbers are
Apparently very large
they should be. Talent is talent. Trae is a really good offensive engine, and a starting five of Trae/Dybantsa/George?/AD/Sarr actually puts your young players in a position to succeed rather than throwing guys into the fire and hoping they produce, like Washington has done every other year this decade.
I mean it’s not my money so pay the man. What’s the alternative on the FA market?
Very happy. Trae wants to be here and I think it works for AJ or DP. You can argue it works better for DP but I don’t think that’s true. AJ needs to develop off ball and on defense to open up the rest of his game.
The entire rest of the squad needs a true point guard desperately.
Makes perfect sense if you’re taking AJ tbh
It’s similar to the fox contract, they can afford it for now since their guys are still on rookie contracts. But in the same way it can potentially age poorly.
Getting the young guys into a winning environment would be great. Making a play in in the #1 picks rookie season would be dope.
They have won less than 20 games the past 3 years, anything that gives them hope is worth being happy about
Very large contract, HUGE
3 for 90 then
Is the very large Bradley Beal level?
The most wizards shit ever is to give Trae Young a contract that is “very large”.
But why..
I can’t wait to see the Wizards next year
Trae sucks
The graphics intern gave Trae Young 2 jersey numbers lol
Trae is a good floor raiser because he can get the other four players involved, but WAS fans are soon going to see his inefficient shooting. Especially to start the year. He’s also dealing with more and more injuries now even though he’s currently 27. I would pay attention to his right Achilles. My guess is WAS is right around the play in or just missing it if Trae can play around 65 games.
Please just go to the Nets it would be so funny
I am genuinely excited to see how this wizards team looks next year
I said this last night.
He’s signing a 3-4 year contract likely 35-40 mil a year.
So him passing up 50 mil isn’t a huge deal if he gets 3 years 40 mil a piece.
Yer a Wizard Trae
Waste of money, he ass
shout out jaylen brunson man gonna get small guards paid for a decade
i wonder if brunson being the best player on a championship squad who is mainly an offensive player will open more doors for guys like trae young or smaller offensive focused guards
Fuck Trae young
Probably 150M
I wouldn’t pay that
The Wizards are always overpaying undersized guards, first Beal now Trae
Tommy Shepherd and Will Dawkins aren’t the same, at least Dawkins wouldn’t give Trae a NTC
I mean it’s the wizards they have to overpay for people to stay/come. And Beal may have ended poorly but he was 30+ PPG 2 seasons in a row. He’s probably like a top 15 wizard ever
They have the 1st pick in the draft, I don’t see why they have to overpay for Trae Young instead of building around their young core.
I forgot he was even on the Wizards tbh
He just declined 49m. Very large would mean the 1st year has to be equal or greater than 49m. If him and AD are making 60m lord help the rest of that roster😂😂😂
Alternatively, he had only 1year left at \(49. So a 3/\)120 could also imply a very large number.
He doesn’t have 10 years of service, so his max is 30% of the cap is $49.5M, so that’s the most he could get for next year.
I doubt that he’s getting a 3 year max deal, which would be 3/$160.
I can see something like 3/$120-130 with player options that would allow him to bail early to sign a 35% max two years from now.
Yea 3yr 160 is the max. I just doubt he signs for less. He might do 3 yrs fixed at 50m as a middle ground
No it doesn’t. If he values longer term security, he’ll take a cut in the first year. But unfortunately I wouldn’t be surprised if it was 3⁄150, as much as it would pain me to see vs the reported 3⁄120.
3⁄150 isn’t happening.
As in it won’t go that high? I certainly hope not.
Rookie scale contracts for top picks. Not the end of the world when the contracts aren’t like 5 year extensions
