Tbf, in terms of football (soccer) broadcasts - where the serious money flows - we in Europe are just as bad if not worse. You need like 3 or 4 different subscriptions to be able to watch all games of FC Bayern for example. And no I’m not partaking in this insanity.

This isn’t really an American specific thing. For example, EPL games are cheaper/more easily available here than in England.
A bigger issue is that teams are withdrawing from League Pass and launching their own streaming services.
For example, the Nets and Knicks are available on an app called Gotham, which features all the sports teams in NY/NJ. Similarly, the Lakers and Mavericks have their own distinct independent platforms.

Every streamer these days is configured to detect VPN IP addresses. Sometimes you get lucky with random servers but it gets rarer and rarer each year
Yeah, I am rarely successful with this; however, I was (surprisingly) able to watch Japanese B.League games fully through a VPN and a Japanese Prime subscription through an American credit card. But that’s obviously a weird and very niche exception.

I really think people would use league pass more than illegal streams if they knocked that crap off. Often times people just go to streams out of convenience. Don’t even want to bother to check if there’s blackout restrictions on the game you want to watch.
I used to pay for the international one since it had everything but it was a hassle since it required a VPN and was annoying to play on anything other than a PC. These streams are free, have casting and no blackouts

Operator of HeheStreams here post-prison: I had a non-zero number of players who were users. Same with team owners, GMs, and referees. The state of streaming is a pervasive issue.
It’s less a payment thing and more a convenience and availability thing. These leagues have their apps built by MBA-types who optimize for everything but the fan; blackouts are heinous.
The partnership between leagues/teams/private entities are only getting worse. My current favorite example is how NFL is treating their fans.
You need five subscriptions to watch an NFL team from week 1 to week 18. The worst part? Let’s say a team plays on NBC (Peacock) week 1 and week 6. That Peacock trial you had? Moot. Enjoy your $12 NFL game, and yay to all the MBAs who bet on you not cancelling that trial.
For NBA, why do you guys think NBC picked up the rights when their streaming service launched? (It was up for bid, sure, but the timing sure was nice.)
For the last decade customers have become very keen on the business/customer dynamic. Customers will go out of their way to support brands they like. But the feelings of customers can swing the other direction, too. When these leagues and teams can be seen as fucking over their fans, their attitude towards how they acquire the content shifts. “I don’t mind paying” becomes “seriously? Why do I need XYZ service?!”
I’m fine with capitalism and shareholders—both provide net-positives in terms of things we (laypeople) wouldn’t otherwise have access to. But there’s a point that I can’t morally justify, and that’s when the average person is railroaded.
I don’t know if we will ever be able to fix it.

This is crazy because the strat you used for the streams was the same approach I remember hearing about in the late 2000s for NBA streams as well. Straight up just using the CDNs to do all the work serving the pirates.
It has always fascinated me that there is this great infrastructure is clearly out there for broadcasting the material but the leagues go through all this effort to paywall it, and it’s only getting worse.
I used International LP for several years in an effort to support the league versus until the NBA made it too difficult.
It got progressively difficult since playlist-based streaming was announced in 2009. Back then we barely had content protection. When AES support was more widely adopted, that didn’t stop anything. (I’m pretty sure I was the first to beat it; I still see my code—quirky-ass function names and all—on websites…). Then CORS, which at least displaces some (client-dependent) users—but even then, there are workarounds for those who are clients who do support CORS.
DRM was lauded as the end to all piracy but if you look at the criminal complaint filed against me, that’s clearly not the case. The problem with DRM is that the companies deploying it think that’s all they have to do. Developers also don’t think like “adversaries.”
The naivety across the board is disappointing. I’m marketed on the other side now—helping all sorts of companies protect their platforms from, you know, “bad guys” like me—and I have to kick and scream sometimes just to get them to listen to non-marketing folk.

re: support and service—in the piracy world (and adjacent markets) the most important thing is building relationships with communities, being steady, and being transparent. I like to think I did a good job. It never felt like I was doing “work” when I was talking to users or potential users. It was just me being a a gregarious internet person.
Not a lot has changed on my end except that I owe money and have a new level of marketability because of the validation the case gave me. I can at least enjoy sports now instead of watching chat to make sure everyone else is having a good time. 😄
