I’ve been a Knicks fan since I was 9, but waiting in that chaos for hours just for a chance to get a spot is crazy to me. Feels very parasocial

Id day so. I got here around 6:15-6:30 and was still able to get in via the Morris entrance. Managed to get a spot right up on the barricade too.

I think I get the gist of what you’re saying but imho parasocial is the totally wrong word. Attending a parade run by your mayor to celebrate a victory by representatives of the city doesn’t require any sort of parasocial relationship with the actual players on the team. Like it absolutely could involve a parasocial relationship, but I imagine most are out there to be in community for the cultural moment.

I talked to a cop for a little bit, he said this area was cut off and from his understanding radioing to others everything was closing off.
Some areas are several blocks deep on side streets, it’ll be impossible to see anything
I met up with a couple friends and we’re just gonna hang in mid town and have some food and watch it on TV
My initial plan was to get to Battery Park by 7a figuring there’d be more space there, but the more we considered logistics and subsequent crowd estimates, the more we all felt staying back was the better bet.
My friend jokingly said the route should’ve been Broadway tip to tip and seeing all the footage this morning I don’t think she was wrong.

It’s a traditional path that all of the New York teams take when they win titles. At this point feels like an outdated tradition. With how long fans have waited for this moment they should’ve done the nyc marathon route 😂

There’s always the idea of having the parade on a Saturday or Sunday as well.

The specifically pick a section of narrow blocks for the sound and ‘ticket tape’. Plus, it’s NYC and we’ve been waiting our entire lives. Parade starts at 10, if you weren’t there at 6 you weren’t getting close and if not there by 4 you’re not getting a view. They have 20+ entrances but thousand at each one.

This is the traditional sports parade ticker tape route but imo they should have broke from tradition and done a 3-4 mile route or more to allow more people to show up.

Probably a safety issue due to multiple factors. You’ve got one of the most congested cities in the world where people are already packed in like a tin of sardines, multiply that by 100 because of the spacing and route. And in the fact that it’s New York, notorious for people who dgaf, there’s bound to be fights and shootings.
We had one in Toronto. Hot muggy day with no exit in sight, being pushed around. I pray that it’ll be a civilized parade and there will be no injuries, but unfortunately I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I got there a little after 8, saw the chaos for about 15 mins and headed back up. I simply think the parade route is too small for the type of celebration needed, oh well at least I got to be there for a bit, and I can watch video of the parade (which is the only way I was actually seeing anything).

Because it’s in the middle of the city so you have limited viewing area and its a city of 8 million people

It’s crazy to me, I live in a major metro and when we won the World Series I just showed up to the parade easily. Was in and out in a few hours lol. The scale of NYC blows my mind.
To NY fans man soak it up, its just such a cool fucking feeling to be there in the moment watching them in person finally able to enjoy themselves.

I lived in Chicago when the Cubs won the World Series. 5 million people celebrating in a city with a population of 3 million. I didn’t need to see this to know to enjoy from afar, add in all the tourists visiting for the World Cup and this is a perfect shit storm.

This is wild. I went to the Seahawks championship parade in February which was crowded and the parade started at 10 or 11, I left my place at 6am and got to Seattle at 7am because I knew it was going to be busy in Seattle.
I also went to the Seahawks parade. Luckily for me the parade route was on the street I live on so I just watched it from the window
I arrived at 6am and they closed the entrances at 720. I was still about half a block from the entrance. Parade was scheduled to start at 10 but didn’t start until 10:20.

The record is 3.5 million. So I think people are just making estimates based off of Mamdani’s incorrect information. Probably on par with the Eagles parade a few years back. Definitely not Chicago Cubs level.

I know canyon of heroes is tradition for championship parades. But the city should have read the room on this one….. it’s way too tight and way too short of a route for this crowd. NYC has much better options, like the thanksgiving day parade route ending in central park for example, that would have accommodated much bigger crowds easily.

Friends in NY were talking about how they should have changed the parade route and day. I remember going to the Thanksgiving Parade years ago and THAT was crazy. No one I know was even thinking of going to this. Seems to be a common feeling- this route is outdated, leave it to history. it should have been a full on down 5th avenue ( or something from all the way uptown to all the way downtown.) on the weekend parade.
