I’ve always been shocked that this doesn’t happen more in hockey. First of all, hockey players are tough, they take pucks to the face at 80 mph and don’t miss a shift. Second, if a high-stick draws blood, it doubles the power-play, which is incredibly valuable. If they ever make me an NHL coach, I’m benching any player who doesn’t bite their lip and draw blood after taking a stick.
Tacky referee gamesmanship isn’t a huge part of hockey culture.
Well, yes and no. It would be, and arguably was for a while, but two major factors restrict it.
One, the league actually enforces embellishment penalties – which, as an aside, the NBA could do immediately, and make games watchable again, they just lack sufficient respect for fans to do so.

Two, you might have to fight someone who doesn’t like your interpretation of “hockey culture”. That cleans up a lot of bad behavior, or used to.
But gamesmanship still exists, and players still throw their head back when a stick comes near them. Goalies still throw their hands up and charge officials after a goal, begging for an interference call, even if they weren’t touched. Players still celebrate after kicking the puck in the net, even when they know replay is probably going to wipe it out. Etcetera.
And again, a free two-minute power play is enormously valuable, and there’s no way to prove that a player bit his lip and caused the blood.
