Shaq and Jordan Playing 1 on 1 - All Star Game 1996
Shaq was fast asf
People forget how insanely athletic shaq was. He was VERY mobile for the superhuman strength he had
Especially Orlando Shaq. In his 1st couple years he was a mix between Giannis and Zion.
He was the best player ever during his peak
His peak was on the Lakers, though, when he was less bouncy or fast than in Orlando, but a far more sophisticated and skilled offensive player.
Also so ridiculously strong. He reached a point where if he got the ball in his spot, you either got out of the way or fouled him and hoped he didn’t dunk it anyway.
Agreed, but Orlando Shaq was the closest thing I’ve seen to LeBron live. He was an absolute freak and had a great 2 man game with Kenny Anderson and Penny. He really had both power and finesse.
Honestly freakier than LeBron. LeBron wasn’t tearing down backboards. We had never seen nothing like that.
They literally had to re-invent how backboards were made because of Shaq. Amazing.
The NBA had to change the rules for him. Allowed zone defence, defensive 3-sec rule, breaking the hoop rule etc
People really do be underestimating Shaq these days.
Actually–Darryl Dawkins was before him.
But–you’re right–With Shaq–the redesign was necessary.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1J86HLTyiM
I still remember the day he broke the board, everyone was talking about it here in Slovenia while i was in highschool.
I mean, LeBron isn’t tearing down backboards because they made the backboards stronger after Shaq did.
After Shaq did it a few times. Broke 2 in the nba and 10 other ones.
Just stop. So silly. No comparison regarding how powerful Shaq was vs LeBron.
LeBron was never doing that to the rim man
You never saw Shaq wiggle in the floor like a fish.
He was no where near as versatile as Bron. Just so dominant in few aspects of his game. Also lets not forget he was lazy comparing to Lebron.
Shaq and Penny were fun to watch indeed
Do you mean Nick? Don’t think Kenny ever played for the Magic.
Yeah man it’s been a while lol
If you’re a Magic fan I understand why you blocked out Brick Anderson
a far more sophisticated and skilled offensive player.
Gets the ball in the post, quick 1-2 drop step, baby hook, sometimes fading away. Automatic go-to move. The touch on that too. Can bank it if he wants at times. Shaq was skilled for a very big guy.
until he got to the freethrow line
The combination of size, skill, and athleticism that Shaq had during the 3 peat was jaw dropping.
Shaq would have been the undisputed goat if he actually gave a shit and stayed in shape and tried his best to get better. Even he knows this, it’s why he’s so insecure.
Not helped by the fact that your teammate has the most sociopathic level of work ethic ever to exist in the NBA.
Nah that is on Shaq entirely he just doesn’t have it.
He’s just pointing out that having the comparison right there on his team makes his lack of work ethic that much more obvious.
You don’t need to compare his work ethics to such extremes as Kobe. He lack will vs much lesser players.
I’m not saying you need to do anything. The other commenter was just highlighting the very stark contrast with his teammate.
Makes you wonder how much better he would’ve been if he gave even a modicum of effort on his fitness
Agreed. The most unstoppable force ever. His playoffs numbers alone during the 3peat are comical.
That’s a tough call.
Jordan, LeBron, Wilt, and Kareem are all right up there. But Shaq is certainly in the mix.
If we’re choosing up teams I’d have no problem taking prime Shaq first. By the time the rest of the roster is filled out the team’s gonna be unbeatable when you have Shaq manning the middle and then having to deal with other insane players. He’s just too much of a handful space wise on the court in those years, on both ends
I honestly believe if Shaq had the work ethic that Kobe had, he would be regarded as the greatest player of all time.
No he wasn’t.
Yes. He actually was (IMO)
That’s the worst comp.ever
Why do you say that?
How so? Did you watch young Shaq? Did you watch him at LSU?
I see this comment everytime this video is posted
Yeah, people don’t forget because forty bozos are parroting the same shit in every thread about Shaq.
People forget that people don’t forget how quick and agile Shaq was in his prime.
totally
People easily forget how insanely shitty human being Shaq is and what he did to his teammates.
He was a completely different player in the early years, very fluid
Was still very fluid in the Lakers. Just bigger and slower. But still very fluid.
For his frame hell yea he was
That’s insane speed for a guy that size jfc
His footwork was sooooo good as well. Deep offensive bag for a center.
He’s fast as fuck boiiiii
Magic Shaq was like a young lebron, just way bigger, the guy could move on a court like there was no tomorrow
Shaq remains the most dominant big man in the NBA.
And they said Chet was going to do what?!?
I think Shaq has become underrated.
Never felt as hopeless against a player as prime Shaq.
Legit seeing every team have 1 or 2 big white dudes to absorb and distribute the beatdown that Shaq gave was a sight to behold.
It’s so true. Dudes were in the league just to take a licking from shaq
And we could tell very easily they were NOT happy about it
What the fuck is a Greg Ostertag?
You guarded prime shaq??? Holy shit
If I wanted to go back and watch a famous full game example of this, what would you recommend? As someone who isnt familiar with that era, it would cool to watch.
They lost this game, but Shaq continually made one of the best defenders of all time look like a toddler: https://youtu.be/g8r7yrI-WPY .
He may have had better statistical games but no one did this to Ben Wallace.
Man it’s so nice watching a game where they’re not pumping shitty music into the arena during play
Who ever thought it would be a good idea to start doing that?
It is assumed the average fan no longer has the attention span to pay attention to the game being played in front of them.
Scored 61 on his birthday.
Making Dikembe look like a child.
Absolutely. He was going to score or you were going to foul him. There was no other possible outcome.
It’s weird to think that could even happen but I think you’re right
When Shaq was young and agile like that, he was the best player on the planet.
Maybe the most athletic but not the best. He got schooled by an experienced Hakeem getting swept by the Rockets.
When he put on weight and got more experience he was nearly unstoppable. If he got it within 5 feet of the basket it was automatic while he was with the Lakers.
He averaged 25.3⁄11.4 during the playoffs as a Magic. As a Laker 27.7⁄13.4 along 3 assists and 2.5 blocks. He not only improved his offense but his passing and defense improved.
He did not get schooled.
Shaq had 28, 12.5, 6.3 on 60% shooting from the field in 45mins per game.
Hakeem had 32.8, 11.5, 5.5 on less than 50% shooting from the field in 45mins per game. He shot even worse when guarded by Shaq directly.
The Rockets played great team defense on Shaq resulting in lots of turnovers from him, as well as reducing his offensive rebounds.
I’d say they were pretty even overall.
This is a good comment. Magic Shaq never win a ring, but he was fucking good. We might as well mention how those magic teams “schooled” Jordan
O yes as opposed to Shaq in LA and MIA who was a noted scrub and not a guy who averaged 26-11-3 with 2.5 blocks on 58% shooting on 36 MPG and won 4 championships.
As a Shaq over Kobe Lakers fan, has he? While the view of Kobe’s legacy has generally diminished post his career, Shaq’s generally hasn’t.
There are other Shaq over Kobe Lakers fans? I thought I was the only one.
Yes. Newer fans think that he was just strong and that he dunked everytime. Dude has legit post moves and great touch around the basket
Nah, hes simultaneously an all-time great and a massive “what if”. If he was as dialed in about looking after his body and staying in shape he would have been the greatest ever. In his prime ive never seen a single other player that dominated like he did
I think many people just know him from the commercials or seeing him on the broadcast instead of seeing his highlights or games.
Where is he underrated at all? Lol
I think he’s outside of people’s top 10 of all time lists
Shaq becoming pee pee poo poo man means people rare him lower, i think
Shaq’s agility for a man his size is absolutely amazing
You know Jordan was fuming inside
more competitiveness in this ASGs pregame warmups than there is during the actual game nowadays (well this years wasnt bad with the new format)
During the lockdowns my dad and I watched the 90s all star games and it’s night and day with regards to effort
I swear this whole ‘not taking the ASG seriously’ started with T-mac’s off-the-backboard dunk. It was cool at the time and what everyone was talking about. But it shifted away from the competitiveness to exhibitionism (lol I’m not sure if this is the correct word for it) ala Globetrotters.
Isiah Thomas to Jordan off the backboard for the dunk in ASG 1989 blew my mind when I was a kid
Nope you are wrong, it didn’t start with TMacs dunk, he had one in 2002 and the other 2004, the all star game sucks since 2017⁄2018 ? It went downhill since Kobe ain’t playing in the all star game.
And I took that personally.
I miss these loud ass tracksuits. Shit was awesome.
And you knew exactly who every player actually played for. These days you gotta spend the first minute calibrating cos you don’t know who the fuck is wearing black and who got red and is this the statement the icon the city the classic or the association today? And yeah, get off my lawn
Used to call them swishies. I’d wear swishie pants almost everyday lol
I miss less flopping
Prime Jordan never met a matchup he thought he couldn’t win. That’s what made him Jordan.
Right. Expecting to outplay Shaq in the post is madness lol.
In fairness he did in 1996
Not AGAINST him in the post lol
Pretty sure Jordan still acts like that lol
He was usually right.
Yet Shaq out played him here
Read carefully
Use those eyes
If you used your eyes, and read carefully, you’d know that the comment you replied to never said, or even implied, that Jordan outplayed Shaq here.
Clocked his blind ass
Shaq definitely watched tape of Hakeem from the 1995 Finals with that Dream Shake
people forget how quick shaq was before he bulked up. 96 shaq moves different than the lakers version most people remember
The lakers Shaq moves much faster than people remember too
fr lakers shaq was still quick but 96 shaq was a different animal. dude was moving like a guard at 300lbs
And this is why we talk about Shaq the way we talk about Shaq. Yall see big Icy-Hot today and think he was some lumbering oaf that bullied his way to the basket using just his size, and he was just a good player. He did bully people, but he also had crazy footwork, speed, and soft touch for his size and even for someone smaller. Teams would send everything they had at Shaq and it just didn’t matter. You don’t get that way just bullying. That takes skill.
If you didn’t see him play in his prime, you have no idea what a menace he was. He shifted the game and forced a meta in the league to account for him.
Im always amazed at the balance these dudes have
Even when there’s a guy banging on you down low
Say that again, Chuck.
…because if you can feel their body… aw, c’mon.
toothbrush, lapd was called
Those magic warmups >>>>>
They’re all sweet, the Bulls, Magic and Hornets are probably the best ones seen here. Wish they nba still had warmup suits like this
I miss teams having their own unique warmup designs instead of templates.
Shaq wasn’t called “Superman” for shits & giggles. Met him once in Miami…nothing prepares you for meeting an actual living giant person. However tall you imagine him to be, don’t forget he’s also not skinny and frail…he is like a human wall.
A lot of people were called Superman, including Dwight. That made the nicknames less effective.
He actually had permission to use the logo from Warner Bros/DC Comics and played Superman in the movie Steel. The logo was on all his merch and he even released a rap album using the pseudonym. So it wasn’t just a nickname it was his brand like Jordan Jumpman.
That doesn’t take away from the fact that Shaq wasn’t the only one called Superman.
He wasn’t just “called” Superman for shits & giggles…the man actually portrayed Superman (Elseworld’s Henry Johns) in comic books and films.
Shaq Shake
SHAKE SHAQ
That’s after the next 100 lbs
Jordan Playing 1 on 1 vs The Guy Who Lost to Aaron Carter
For all his insecurity and pettiness, there isn’t a force more dominant in NBA history than Shaq
Im so glad i got to watch this era of basketball as a teenager. 90s basketball was on a whole spectrum itself. While i do enjoy the high scoring capabilities of todays game. Defense was off the charts back then and a 30 piece was just simply miraculous to see. To watch the start of a bulls game and see the bull charging through the streets of chicago on your tv would just give you chills to watch. Wow what a time it was.
Shaq was so agile😂
Shaq can be top 3, if not the GOAT- if he’s just taken care of his body like Lebron.
quick cross from shaq, and crazy fluid and light on his feet
I’ve always loved this clip. That move is dirty.
It’s the unofficial sign of the offseason when this clip is brought up
young Shaq’s quickness doesn’t get enough respect. people remember the force but forget he had legit footwork and a decent face-up game before the weight piled on
Oh he did a fadeaway, didn’t see that coming
Prime Shaq was an absolute demon, man was nigh unstoppable
Bring those fit back!
Prime Shaq was a menace. Unguardable
When inside the NBA was on my Mom recognized Charles but not Shaq. I can kinda see why now, that guy looks so different now
This made me smile Man
MJ posting up Shaq while Shaq face up MJ
Weird
Watch it everytime
90s warmup outfits remain undefeated
Kazaam!!
The Razzle Dazzle
Way more effort in this clip than we’ve seen in All Star games in the last 10 years
GOT EM
Even when he got bigger with Lakers he was still fast and dominant.
Brunson played for the Chicago Bulls?
Q
Young Shaq was something else. Pulled out Hakeem’s dream shake like it was nothing.
They need to bring back these tracksuits tho. (And also let players just wear their team’s jersey during the ASG)
The dream shake!
I miss Orlando Shaq
“That’s right young fella”
This proves it. Shaq > Jordan
You could argue Shaq was right up there with Jordan in 2000 when he won MVP and finals MVP. I don’t think Jordan was even that unstoppable compared to Shaq that one season.
Shaq gave Jordan his only playoff loss during his 6-title run.
Can i repost this tomorrow ? Is there a waiting line somewhere ?
I was not expecting that holy shit lol that was cold 🥶 blooded
“And I took that personally…”
This never gets old
Shaq was something until the second part of his career when he became full time food reviewer. Like Chuck.
Every time I see young shaq I can’t help but to think if only he had the work ethic of Kobe/mj/lebron. Dude would have been a monster for many more years.
I mean this is probably the best post move he ever made. I’m not rippin. That was fabulous. The between the legs dribble in the beginning opens up the fake spin one direction. One move sets up the next. Obviously he could just overpower Jordan at any time but he used finesse on this. Shaq is the most dominant big man I have ever seen in my lifetime.
“and I took that personally”
cool!!
Dream shake
can anyone tell me how to do what shaq did in 2k’s control?
