Not quite, he started beating around the bush then Trump interrupted saying basically “you can call me a fascist I don’t mind”. Mamdani is still a bit green.

Trump likes Mamdani because he’s handsome and he gets media attention. But often that media attention is negative towards Mamdani because it’s all run by billionaires with agendas.
Media attention is “negative” to Trump because there have been weak attempts to hold him to account which is the ULTIMATE betrayal.
Since Trump consider himself a perfect representation of charisma and masculinity, in his mind, he and Trump were attractive, manly heroes united against the evil press.
So the “You can call me a fascist…” wasn’t grace or anything else. It was “You know how they treat us so terribly. Let them get on with it.”
You don’t have to hyper analyze that moment to think it was hilarious.

It’s hard to reconcile with the, you know, everything, but yeah, he is where he is because of his charisma. It’s why I’m not as worried about Vance or the rest of that crew - Trump knows how to play a crowd, that’s why he is where he is.
That’s not quite how it went down. A reporter asked, and Mamdani was visibly uncomfortable. But Trump was so charmed that he literally turned to Mamdani and said “it’s ok, you can say it.”
I’m not saying Mamdani doesn’t hate Trump because he obviously does. But he’s smart and focused enough on doing what’s best for his constituents that he went to the Oval Office with a clear plan to play nice rather than being antagonistic. It was clearly the more productive option than putting his personal feelings first and making a scene.
I knew before it even happened that that was how Mamdani was going to play it, because he’s always shown that at the end of the day that he’s centered on doing what he needs to do to deliver for the people of New York.
Trump is also a New York dem by heart he just switched parties and ideologies cause it was the easiest path to power
At the end of the day Trump was never a Dem anymore than he is a Republican now. He has no principles - he just says and does what ever he thinks will serve his interests. He was a Dem then because it was the cool thing to be in rich famous NY circles, and he’s a Republican now because it was his path to power. I don’t think he ever actually has given a damn about any platform.
He still has some 90s democrat in him, particularly when it comes to gun policies where he breaks with essentially his entire base.
Some of that was preternatural. Mamdani is a conventionally attractive, charismatic man and Trump LOVES handsome, charismatic men.
That is also part of it. He loves winners and he recognizes that Mamdani is a star. It’s just so funny that Trump is only able to surround himself with total losers because he needs sycophants. It’s palpable how much more he liked Mamdani than anyone in his own cabinet.
Trump felt that way about Musk for a while too. I think you’re right though, once Trump realized Musk is a loser too that relationship soured.

This is such a great point. Like it’s not just showing the end product. you can see the person‘s face who is physically working on it and kind of get reminded of the blue collar energy behind it all.
I don’t think I ever really looked at a street sign and thought “someone *made* that”. Obviously upon thinking about it it’s clear, but this is the kind of thing that makes me stop to consider it all.
The most refreshing thing about him IMO is showing that politics can be about getting things done vs preventing things from happening which is the default stance of both major political parties in this country.
