In the 2020s “unicorn” means a healthy OG Anunoby for a full playoff run, including averting potential disaster from a hamstring issue arising mid-playoffs. Fucking miracle worker. Championship-level support staff behind the scenes.
For those not in the know, Casey Smith had been on the medical staff of Mavericks for 20+ years when Luka, Brunson, and Nico Harrison were all there. While Casey Smith was caring for his ill mother in the final weeks of her life, Nico video called him and fired him as VP of Player Health and Performance.
He eventually landed a job with the Knicks as VP of Sports Medicine. The Knicks went from somewhat average with player injuries to winning a peer awarded best training staff in the NBA. The health and readiness of the Knicks players was a huge reason for their regular season and post-season success this year.

I believe part of OG’s agreement to re-sign with us was that he wanted us to beef up other parts of our PT/fitness teams too. We have placed a priority on medical staff and PT because we know how important health is during the playoffs.
