Were the “wrapped up in February” reports attributed to any named NBA officials? Because if not, they should not have been taken seriously. Investigations take time. You have to follow every lead, interview everyone who was involved, read all the emails and documents, and financial records. That is tedious work. When investigations have a deadline, you limit the time you have to follow all the leads and end up with an incomplete investigation. That’s much more likely to lead to a situation where there are no consequences.

And don’t forget the Clippers/Ballmer are very likely to sue if they end up with consequences. The league has to prepare for that

Based exclusively on Pablo’s reporting there isn’t enough to punish the Clippers.  It’s mostly speculation and some internal employee rumor mill. There’s not a single piece of evidence that actually shows cap circumvention and a lot of his episodes actually contradicted one another. The entire initial premise of 50 mil in/50 mil out was later disproven by Pablo’s own podcasts by showing that it was actually 116 mil from the clippers/ballmer, an agreement for aspiration to pay the clippers 350 mil (which didn’t happen) and a 7 mil per year brand ambassador deal for Kawhi that only ever net him 3.5 mil total before the company went under. 

If that was a grand cap circumvention scheme, they failed miserably at it.  118 mil in.  3.5 mil out.  

And given there are other sponsors  that have arrangements similar to what aspiration had with Kawhi (for instance, Rakuten which pays the warriors for a sponsorship and Steph millions separately as a brand ambassador) it still can be explained away potentially as Joe Sanberg making that deal on his own while his employees (who are in the dark about the fraud as well)  all internally speculated to each other it was cap circumvention… despite the fact there’s actual records showing they went as far as hire a creative agency to come up with a kawhi ad campaign before the company went under, the campaign was cancelled, and they only paid Kawhi for 6 months of his 4 year contract (3.5 mil of 7 mil annual agreement with his only two quarterly payments coming late).  

So while it all still seems fishy, there needs to be something else that comes out in the independent investigation for them to lay down a punishment.  And as far as we have heard, they haven’t yet concluded their investigation.
