While reflecting on the championship Patrick Ewing talks about Victor Wembanyama “I love him, I love him, I think hes special”
Patrick’s such a class act. I know this championship meant a lot to him. I love how he always uses “we” or “us” whenever he talks about this Knicks team
Feels like winning now meant just as much to him as if he were still on the court.
Such a special moment and full circle for him after he was injured the last time the Knicks played the spurs in the 99 finals
It’s odd that he was an assistant coach for MJ’s Charlotte Hornets of all franchises for a while. He seems like a guy that should only be affiliated with the Knicks, whether as a player, coach, or just mentor
He ain’t wrong. Wemby got the tools obviously. Fix the mental, intangibles. Leverage the experience of losing in the finals. I have a feeling the Knicks have created a monster
But today belongs to Brunson and the Knicks 🔥
Get a couple more shots he’s very comfortable with especially when a team is doing everything to keep him out of the paint. Which will happen sometimes nowadays. He will get there. Just like LeBron developed an entire post game before he won his first chip and only later a knock down jump shot.
A lot of this is actually more about team composition. Wemby had teammates going 1⁄10 and 3⁄15 or whatever. They swap that out for guys that actually hit their shots and get more motion in the offense and the other team simply won’t be able to just send bodies to keep him out of the paint because they’ll lose by a billion to his teammates shooting trying that. They’re just gonna have to get more 3 point shooters and less Fox. Right now they have some shooters and some questionable guys from the 3 so its a lot easier to load up on stopping Wemby and they also don’t really move the ball much which is another problem. They need a floor general but not one that can’t shoot
I know people say he chokes or whatever but I really wouldn’t have minded a James Harden as a vet instead of Fox. I really think a guy like that would raise the floor for the Spurs lack of intelligent offense lol. They’re just young and kind of dumb on offense atm. Realistically the Spurs don’t want a Fox because he has to get paid too much in the future when we’re really trying to have Harper out there by then. A great vet though that won’t overstay and gets paid an appropriate amount that can teach would be great
Fox isn’t salvageable, but the young guys clearly have the potential to turn into something great. It’s less about the players and more so that Mitch didn’t actually have an offensive system and just relied on his guys making something happen using raw talent. When the other team makes adjustments he just keeps having them do the same thing and they get rattled. James “I am the system” Harden would have certainly helped by knowing how to run an offense, but any competent coach would have helped too.
> Get a couple more shots he’s comfortable with
You’re making it sound easy lol
He has neither the mass nor the stamina to bang down low for deep play off run, and so his alternative is to develop a mid range package and foot work like KD? I guess it could happen but that’s a tall order.
I think a lot of people forget that the Spurs are ahead of schedule. They weren’t suppose to make finals. Even they themselves said at the beginning of the season that the goal was to make it to the playoffs as top 6 in the west (no play-ins). Then halfway through the season, they realized they were actually better than expectation.
2025-2026 belongs to the Knicks deservedly. But Wemby and the Spurs are looking scary for the next decade.
It’s crazy how this sub flipped into pile on mode. Your point is spot on.
I mean, Harper alone is gonna level up and be such a crucial piece.
I’ve been so unbelievably impressed with Harper. It really can’t be overstated how good he’s been as a damn rookie asked to play a major role in a title push.
I just wish that they had kept CP3 for this season so that he could teach Harper too.
Wemby is 1-2 years ahead of schedule. Harper looks like he’s 3 years ahead of schedule.
The mental and intangibles don’t even need much fixing. Wemby has improved every season. I’m scared of what we’ll see next
Knicks can take no credit in wembys future. Dude was always gonna be a monster 😅
He just needs a supporting cast (and by that have them develop)
He played with not a single player close to all NBA level. The 2nd through 5th best players in the series with all Knicks.
This is Harper erasure
Yea, to me Harper was the 2nd most dominant offensive player on the court behind Brunson this series.
The Knicks threw every defensive look at Harper possible, and no one could slow him down
In game 3 Harper shot 5⁄18, 1⁄8 from 3
He was great last night though
That’s fine. Brunson had bad lines too. But you need those guys that can drive to the paint and spread the floor.
Harper was very good. He wasn’t even top 2 in rookie of the year and was obviously not even remotely in all NBA discussions.
He is good. Likely will be great. But he isn’t an all NBA guy now
Bruh you’re getting downvoted when his second best player was Castle, Fox (injured) or Harper lol. Getting this far with that team is incredible.
Didn’t one of them win 6moy? wtf is this slop.
Do you even watch basketball?
Who was all NBA level on the spurs this season
No one even received a vote.
You go by votes? You definitely don’t watch basketball lmaoo.🤣
Or we could see nothing ever come to fruition with Fox on the team.
I think Wemby is still pretty well liked overall and the hater voices are just loud right now. It’s not gonna last granted, he’s absolutely going to be probably more hated than Shai ever was because that’s the inevitable cycle barring Steph Jokic, Giannis outliers of being a face or the leuage or BITW player. But I will say the sheer level of vitriol he received the last few days has slightly taken me aback. It’s not just clowning on a guy for being arrogant or perceiving him as being dirty this postseason.
There’s a loud group of people that seem to utterly despise him and have an insane amount of anger towards him, like we haven’t seen since Warriors KD or 2011 Bron. Like actively saying he’s evil, an awful person, wishing career ending injuries or even death on him, justifying him being egged. He’s still pretty well liked overall and infinitely more liked that decision LeBron and Warriors KD obviously but while people like Shai and Luka are (very unjustly imo) way more hated overall, I haven’t seen that level of personal hatred at least be so loud. So as the cycle inevitably leads to him being much more hated overall in the future, I wonder how disturbing frankly some of the hate could end up, and even go beyond something like decision LeBron or Warriors KD.
It’s wild that Wemby’s blood clots suddenly have fans. They want him out of the league, period. It’s enough to make me worry about his general safety in public. It’s not like he can hide
It sucks people wishing harm on him but I was surprised at how dirty he was these entire playoffs. I mean the Knicks winning saved us a round of discussion about how dirty that closeout on Brunson was. I’ve argued against the rule being so strict when you see players jump from behind the 3pt line and landing in front of it on defenders, but Wemby’s foot lunged across the line into Brunson’s path. I mean dude was looking to be kicked out due to Flagrant points from a Finals game, and that’s with getting some generous treatment from some of his plays. That’s Draymond territory of dirty, reckless play.
He had way too many dirty plays. It was a lot of spotlight for him at 22 and he struggled to handle it. I imagine the entire country of France was watching every game too.
He will learn from it and mature unlike Draymond who only got worse over time.
The closeout on Brunson was not dirty at all lmfao
FWIW I’ve noticed the vast majority of people popping off on Wemby have been from Wolves, Thunder, and Knicks flairs
Thunder fans re-emerging out the woodwork just to make hate posts.
Wolves fans were mostly pretty supportive during the finals, but the OKC hatewatching was insane.
This postseason was a cesspool online. I don’t remember it being this bad till the finals last year. True appreciators know we are seeing something special with Wemby if he develops as we hope.
The world is online, the lines between on and off line are increasingly blurred.
People shit on Tatum because he’s corny lol. NBA fans are assholes man
I only saw conciliatory remarks after he ruptured his achilles and was no longer a threat .
I’d say sports fans in general because one of Russell Wilson’s biggest personal flaws in a lot of people’s eyes was that he was too corny and it rubbed too many people the wrong way. It’s so ridiculous when actually take a step back and think about it lol.
There’s just so much hatred that takes away from appreciation of the game.
I remember the Steph hate though it was kinda insane on here
Eh Wemby will be liked if he wins, clowned if he loses. Despite the controversial reffing, he got a lot of appreciation when he played well. If the officiating was 20% less sus and Spurs take it to 7, he’d get his flowers. He didn’t offer up any excuses either other than “We fucked up”. You can look at it as him giving the other team no credit, but nothing would’ve stopped the clowning after blowing three 20 point leads.
He either figures it out and we look at his words as fact (he can only be beaten when he makes mistakes), or he withers and we clown him. It’s how every NBA career goes. Look around and see how many guys getting cut say the same shit as Kobe. Cam Thomas has literally copied the Mamba stuff word for word and he gets constantly clowned because he’s a bad player. Ability creates aura - what you say hardly matters.
Pretty much every former and even current player has spoken very highly of Vic but alas, Reddit thinks hes a phony who’s just tall. They probably know better tbh
Nah he’s a monster and fun to watch. Needs to clean up some stupid stuff. The NBA not cracking down on him is what angers me the most but obviously he’s a star and will get benefit of the doubt because of it.
You guys gonna be a problem for years.
Yea I’m not gonna sit here and defend the flagrants and temper, league def shoulda stepped in. But I have an instinct to give grace because I was a disaster at 22 without an ounce of that kinda pressure. Congrats to yall, I live in the Northeast and am happy Knicks fans get to have this feeling.
Appreciate it!
He absolutely choked in crunchtime of this series with missed free throws and of course the game 2 turnover. Last night you could see the moment got the better of basically everyone with how many missed free throws there were
Harper And Wemby are the future. Vassell and Steph could also be part of that future.
No one’s discounting his talent, it’s antics and the arrogance that we all hate
I mean thats a lie theres definitely people discounting his talent lmao
When a player becomes disliked it stops mattering what they do on the court or the field people will just decide that they are bad
Could say that for anyone, it’s whatever
I said it before and I’ll say it again… This was the best time to play Wemby. Every season for the next decade he’s going to be better than the last.
His unc vibes are immaculate
If he ever learns some post moves he could be real fuckin dangerous
Patrick Ewing is sportsmanship personified. Understated, hyper efficient ( and articulate) thoughtful, graceful … thank you.
The courteous comment to the SA reporter gets the headline out of all he just said?
My agendas gotta be pushed
Wemby’s just gotta come off the moral high horse about and cut the dirty stuff. He’ll be fine
You could see him real time realize ethical basketball isn’t winning basketball
