Jalen Brunson when asked about his feelings for Texas: “I love Texas. I miss the Texas taxes.”
People acting like he’s dodging his taxes. He made a joke 😭
Brunson hates taxes. Trump hates taxes. Brunson = Trump…?
Many people are saying!
Sports Illustrated says it!
The Bleacher report says it!
“The man” Jalen Brunson
Believe me, it’s true. No one knows it better than me!
With tears in their eyes!
[removed]
First sentence kind of ironic with his dad
which brunson you talking about
The one who won a chip obviously… Wait.
Trump hates taxes for the rich, doesn’t care about us common folk being taxed out the ass to pay for vanity projects like a ballroom and UFC fight. Not the same at all.
Brunson is rich. Brunson hates taxes for himself. Brunson hates taxes for the rich.
Woosh
Not even a woosh, just a bad attempt at a joke
Shut up dummy
We get it, bud.
I’ve never seen together them in the same bui- oh wait.
QED
Probably - maybe. People are saying it. I don’t know.
Who loves taxes? Seriously
Anyone that makes any amount of money hates taxes. They are a joke.
It’s so redditful lol. You pay less at Brunson’s tax bracket in Texas than you do in New York. That’s just how it is. It doesn’t mean anything shady is going on.
“Less” is a massive understatement.
Texas ZERO income tax. NYC has not only your typical state tax state, but also a city tax. Both at high levels for his income. It’s literally a multi-millionaire dollar difference at his level
If he lives in the city, he pays a bit under 4% to the city. Sucks, but it’s not that bad. Same rate I pay, actually. The tax brackets cap off really low.
that’s 4% to the city. he’s also paying New York the state 10%.
Never said he wasn’t. It’s worth it, though.
4 % at his income level is a scary amount of money.
“Not that bad” 4% of his salary last year is 1.4 million. That’s JUST the city.
Now add on the 11% he pays to New York State, and you are looking at another 4 million lol. That literally is a annual 6 million dollar difference, but “not that bad”
Still 4%. 1.4 mil is a lot more to you than it does to him because he makes 25 times that.
it’s not still 4% though is the point. it’s more like 14-15%. 4.5 mil from his nba contract, not including endorsements.
Why are you so upset by the taxes another man pays
Us normies get owned by property taxes in Texas though, heh.
Still not as bad as the overall tax burden in CA
I’ve always read the overall tax burden for the lower/middle class is higher in Texas than California.
Need to do some more research on that, but soccer is on,.will do later, haha
that’s accurate. sales taxes and property taxes, etc typically hit lower/middle income people much harder.
Texas may not have income tax but they make up that loss with ridiculous property taxes.
I assume he lives in Jersey tbh
The state taxes are still taxed based on where you earn your money though.
Yes, even if he lives in New Jersey he definitely plays New York state taxes out of every paycheck (though I don’t know if at filing time if he also has to file NJ taxes and he then gets a credit for the ones already paid to NY, or if the two states have a reciprocal agreements such that NJ residents who work in New York don’t need to file NJ returns), but if he doesn’t live in New York City, he doesn’t pay New York City taxes even though that’s where he works (I used to live on Long Island so I know this intimately).
They pay taxes in every city they play in as professional athletes though. It’s the “jock tax”.
So even players not on the knicks still pay NY taxes for the games they play there basically.
Yes and no, because like I said if you don’t live in New York City you don’t pay New York City taxes even if you work in New York City. So none of those players who come to New York City and play the Knicks (or the Nets) pay New York City taxes. Just New York state ones. So, if Jalen brunson or anyone else on the Knicks wanted to save money on taxes, they’d live in New Jersey. Maybe city taxes work differently in other cities in this country, but that’s how nyc works.
I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on jock taxes, but I would be shocked if they pay New York city taxes when a person who lives on Long Island and works in Manhattan does not. But tell me if I’m wrong.
Yes but he doesn’t have to pay the nyc residence taxes if he doesn’t live in nyc.
He lives in westchester
Brunson doesn’t pay the city tax though, you only pay if you live in the city, he lives in Westchester. NY state tax is reasonably high tho, but property taxes are much lower than TX.
Zero STATE income tax. Youre going to confuse the confusable
I mean no shit? I assume everyone here knows both Texas and NY are in the same country lol
They’re so slow, man.
Got mad at me elsewhere for saying Brunson would be a great Joe Rogan guest lmao.
Tbf thats still valid bc Rogan is trash and has been for a long time now
Most American thing you can do is fight against taxes.
Also name 1 person that actually likes paying their taxes. He’s just being real
Oliver Wendell Holmes (Supreme Court justice back in the early part of the 20th century):
I like to pay taxes. With them, I buy civilization.
Yep. And some players actively choose to not go to some cities/states because of that if they can lol
It’s so funny because rich people don’t even really pay taxes. Like I’m “broke” and clear 6 figures, but I pay more in taxes than my family with real money. This comment was essentially regarding how the NBA taxes are dictated by the state you played in, not which state employs you… So winning in 5 without home court advantage was less adventageous from a tax perspective than being a spur.
Lol somebody check on Kawhi
Concerning if true…
I don’t think he’s joking about missing a system where you don’t pay state income taxes.
Context behind this clip: Brunson’s biggest wins have all been in Texas arenas so interviewer asked if he had an agenda against Texas lol
How hard is it for people to watch a 1 minute clip before you comment Jesus Christ 😭
Really hard lol. I don’t think most people realize how addicted they are to dopamine hits. They swipe fast to find the next drug.
Those brothas need help
not just the brothas (dudes), but yes. 😔
Big women need help too cmon cowboy giddeeup
I recently went to rehab and part of that was the first 3 days no electronic (phone, tablet, laptop) and everyday during sessions we couldn’t have it. Those 3 days were eye opening how often I was on my phone. Would sit on the couch and turn on a game and immediately reach at my pocket. I know the “just living in the moment” thing is a meme but it really is nice to step away from the dopamine given from tech.
I’ve gotten more obsessive now with getting the lowest weekly screen time report. Probably TMI, but felt relevant
I think you’re an inspiration to a lot of people. I don’t think we have any idea how much damage smart phones and social media has caused.
I see people all the time that are so addicted to their phones notification sound they reach for it immediately while driving on busy roads.
Not TMI. Congrats on taking the step, glad it has stuck, and hopefully you inspire someone to do the same!
Everybody is an addict yet nobody knows it.
Its gotten sooo rampant. Same with wemby “everybody knows were gonna win” clip. All the comments just immediately responded to op headline without watching the video. Reddit shouldn’t let you comment until the video has been played/finished lol
Not even a minute the question is like 15 seconds of it lol
I stopped reading your comment after a few words to assure you that yes, it is very hard.
Context - this guy is shitting on OP for unnecessarily summarizing a short clip.
Probably because most bots lack the context when it comes to video/clips
Not quite: the final four sites are generally neutral (and one of the nova ships was against unc). It’s just funny that all three of the biggest games in his career were in Texas for a team not from Texas.
Thank you for the correction. I will fix my comment
What is the third game? Besides the two games that clinched the chil
The two nova ships, one was in Houston and the other was in San Antonio.
I mean that and he also played for the Mavs for four years.
Context? You mean the beginning of the video
Yeah but people don’t watch the video
Eagles Knicks?
Unless you’re literally on the Knicks and went to ‘Nova…disgusting
Brunson and KAT are Eagles/Knicks fans. I feel no shame
That’s what my comment was implying that the only justification for that garbanzo bean fandom combination is if you are in fact KAT.
In Philly we support the Sixers…not whoever’s convenient.
Are you Turncoat Tina Fey, by chance?
I honestly don’t care what you think. I’ve been an an Eagles fan since childhood before I even knew what football was. And I don’t think I need to explain the struggles of Knicks fans. I’m just grateful 2 teams I support are winners.
And NBA taxes are based on the state you play in, not the state that employs you… So every game in NY pays less than games played in most other states
What was Mark Cuban thinking?
Thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room.
Dirk saved him.
Cuban is that guy taking 3 top QBs in fantasy thinking it’s a 4D chess move.
the bill simmons piece
I’d like to take this opportunity to remind folks that Dirk only played alongside four different All-Star teammates: Michael Finley (‘00 and ‘01), Steve Nash (‘02 and ‘03), Josh Howard (‘07) and Jason Kidd (‘08 and ‘10). Howard in 07 and Kidd in 2010 were injury replacements.
He got his in 2011, but imagine if he had the co-star help his peers had.
more like NBA fans using hindsight to forget that it was the Knicks taking that gamble by signing Brunson to that deal
He could have signed Jalen to 4⁄55
Yup. Everything is a 4D chess move with that chud.
u/markcuban answer?
Brunson was going to NY no matter what but people conveniently forget about that
That was true by the end of the season but Brunson tried to extend with Mavs earlier in the year and got turned down
Yeah the problem is they let him hit FA. The extension was pretty cheap too if I remember correctly
[deleted]
They offered all 3 guys the same extension I believe but told them it wouldn’t be until after the ASB (Brunson, DFS, Kleiber), ostensibly because they were trying to trade Porzingis and needed all the flexibility they could to move him. Those 3 couldn’t have been part of a trade if they signed earlier.
Meanwhile Rick Brunson said his son wouldn’t talk extension after the ASB. NY gave him like 4 years/111 after the season.
I remember when brunson signed that contract everyone thought it was an overpay. No one would’ve thought cuban was stupid back then.
I remember it being two sided: people thought Knicks overpayed, but they also thought the Mavs were dumb for letting him leave. At the very least the Mavs shouldn’t have gotten into a position where their second best player could leave in free agency leaving them with nothing but cap space. That’s just bad practice especially when at least one team clearly wanted him.
Same thing he was thinking with Steve Nash and Tyson Chandler
He was going to New York as soon as his dad ended up there.
Jesus Christ some of you all are fucking miserable.
He cracked a joke. And who the fuck wouldn’t miss paying less taxes?
Property taxes are high there so for most people it is trading which tax you want to pay.
Texas property taxes are 1.60 to 1.80 per \(100 of assessed value New York property taxes 1.55 to 1.72 per \)100 of assessed value.
Wouldn’t call that close to a trade off given the rate of state taxes in NY. Not even factoring average cost of a property in NY compared to Texas.
Cheaper than new york yes, but most people think texas is low taxes in general. It really isn’t. High property and sales tax combo there.
New York has the highest tax burden of any state. Texas ranks somewhere in the mid-to-late 30s.
New York also got public transportation. Texas, if takes over an hour to go from Houston to Houston.
Yep, same as in Washington state where I’m at. No state income tax is bad for low to middle class earners. You just end up paying that tax elsewhere, and it’s always regressive. Whether property which hurts those stretched for their mortgage already or sales and excise taxes which per $ hurts lower earners way harder than high earners.
It’s barely anything compared to high income tax in other states for anyone making 200k+. Which Brunson of course is
lol. Total taxation in New York is significantly higher than in Texas.
Peak marginal income tax rate for athletes like Brunson in NYC is 54%.
In Dallas it’s about 39.35%. So no Brunson is not paying 15% of his annual salary on property tax lmao
Edit: by my math at Brunson’s current salary for him to pay 15% of it in property tax at Texas 1.6% rate he would have to own $327 million in real estate. rofl
Based on the anti work subs so prevalent on this site, people here don’t make enough money to realize that it’s common sense you’d want to reduce your taxes when it’s 10s of thousands, yet alone literally MILLIONS at Jalen’s level.
People here have this mindset that you can tax people whatever and they won’t leave. People have a limit lol
I want to reduce my taxes when it’s 10’of dollars…
Go figure the people likely to pay the least amount of taxes are the ones getting mad about it.
“Tax the rich” to them is anyone over $70k lmfao
Yep, it’s a delicate balance. Too little and you have bad infrastructure and/or low levels of services. Too high and people leave and you end up with the same problem.
Sweet spot is the ability to have relatively high taxes and people still want to stay, like California and NYC has. California has weather, culture, beauty and industry which allows them to stretch their tax scheme because people want or need to be there.
NYC is similar minus the weather/beauty.
Agree with you 100%
Except basketball players pay taxes based on where they play the basketball game and there is a wide range of different cases for the sponsor money he makes. It just doesn’t make that much a difference and even the small difference in property taxes makes a huge difference when they are paying for places these guys live in.
I live in the greater Toronto area and happily pay a shit ton of taxes, both income and property…yet I’d be even happier to pay much less
You must have forgotten what website you’re on
Yeah imagine going from Texas taxes to New York’s
I mean…for a millionaire who never needs to rely on public services, sure. For normal people those lower taxes come with consequences
A millionaire looking to avoid taxes is bad. Paying taxes is good, its just a shame our taxes mainly just go to brain dead cops and the mass murdering military instead of things that contribute to the public common good
Lmfao take literally 30 seconds to read about what you’re speaking on. Or are you fine with being this ignorant?
First, no one likes paying taxes; second, our tax dollars mainly go toward paying social security and healthcare (Medicare & Medicaid)
By mainly do you mean 14%? Healthcare and Social Security account for more than triple of the military And police spend.
https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/where-do-our-federal-tax-dollars-go
Social security and healthcare are ~48% of government spending, and ~65% of government revenue (taxes).
The next biggest line-item is interest payments (~14% of budget, ~19% of revenue).
The defense budget is the fourth biggest thing at 12% of budget, 16% of revenue.
This site is so easy to predict lmao. Some of you genuinely need help if a joke about taxes disturbs you this much.
Social media has brain rotted so many people into believing that more taxes are the way to a better world.
All of this is like this because we’ve exempted the wealthiest among us from paying taxes. Yes, taxes are a way into a better world. It’s part of living in a society
I pay my taxes so that Learing Centers across the country can really just help out the kids that can’t learn good
lol no. The world will be better if we all circulate our monies instead of pouring it into government programs
Government programs circulate the monies into housing, healthcare, and education (when administered properly, which governments did for decades until captured by corporations). Meanwhile not taxing results in wealth hoarding and regulatory capture.
I circulate my own money into my housing, healthcare, and education.
Billionaires: notoriously the spreaders of monies. There’s not like, studies done or anything on how warped your brain gets with that amount of wealth.
Do you realize how many people became millionaires due to Musk? The Space X ipo alone has lifted thousands into that bracket.
All his taxes saved in Texas like he’s George Strait
Clear indication he wants to play for the Spurs. Fox for Brunson should do it 😏
fox is a little taller so maybe they can attach a frp too thanks
Redditors seething at this
Cue the conspiracies of him getting paid under the table
the fuck is wrong with yall lol
Everyone wants to pay their taxes until it’s time to pay their taxes. /s
*pause for laughter *
uh.. I love Mikael & Josh”
Mamdani in shambles…
We love you too dawg. Congrats
Noted
You are welcome to back up Dylan Harper
Dylan Harper is backing up Fox though. Enjoy that contract
WSJ literally already wrote an op-ed about this: https://www.wsj.com/opinion/jalen-brunsons-tax-wisdom-f00ee3f0?mod=mhp
It’s funny people chastising him for making a joke about preferring lower taxes while simultaneously acknowledging what a waste of tax money the UFC fight and frequent golf trips are.
i went to Texas earlier this year and same lol. seeing gas prices so low compared to California was crazy. not having to pay that much taxes on things either was nice too. i also really miss that Texas BBQ…
Jalen is always paying penalties on his estimated taxes because he doesn’t get going until the 4th quarter
He dare thinks he’d rather keep his money.
People really mad about this???
I moved from Texas and also miss the lack of state income taxes. That’s about it though
Real, im happy to pay more taxes. And i’d like to call it the happy lifestyle tax. Fuck texas.
What about the BBQ and food
Dante in shambles
Did Mike Tomlin post this?
Fuck you, Tomlin I’m tired of your shit!
Texas pays the second most taxes of any state…
It’s in the 30s for total taxation. New York is #1
does anyone else see cartoon eyes from the hat & googles lol
Can we talk about champagne eyewear
I was confused by his speaking for a minute until I looked him up. Born in Jersey and there until 6 before moving to Illinois. No real accent allegiance from this guy. Just a young dude who annunciates really well, a lot better than many in his generation.
Texas misses you JB 💔
Mamdani gotta exclude all the Knicks…except Dolan
I miss Texas taxes and I never been to Texas
After everything mamdani did this is how you repay him?
[This is also a joke btw]
What we don’t take in in income taxes, we make up in property taxes. It’s not government magic.
You really think his property taxes would be equal to his income taxes? Get out of here. Property taxes are not that high at all
Income taxes, sure.
Texas property taxes? Woof.
When you make that much, property taxes on a \(10m home is peanuts compared to state taxes on \)40m…we have income tax of course…
Yes, true. Texas real estate taxes are regressive too with the poor and middle making up that gap.
I’m sure Brunson absolutely misses being propped up by the average middle and lower class in Texas.
all the comments are people bitching about the people bitching about NY taxes it’s kinda corny
truth is this cities tax brackets are fucked up when the middle class pays a higher income share than the rich
https://itep.org/new-york-who-pays-7th-edition/
we get bent over on personal income the most
Literally the only good thing about Texas. It can rot.
No joke at his earning level and with NY city and state taxes he’d be at 50% if not more. Make 30 million and 15 million gone to be wasted by the government.
It’s Texas’ one saving grace.
Such a weird mindset. Dude is making tens of millions more now and can still complain.
typical rich person answer
Poor guy has to give half his money to the government
Bro pays a lower percentage than any of us (not his fault)
What
The top 1% of income earners pay a lower percentage of their wealth than any other tax bracket
You are taxed on income
I didn’t say I wasn’t lol.
But so is he (his nba contract) only his income bracket can afford the best accountants to maximize his deductions and writeoffs. You and me don’t get that luxury and pay a higher effective tax rate based on percentage.
Edit:Armchair economists only know how to downvote 😅 Keep denying reality until the billionaires throw you into the meat grinder
