Larry David ranks OG’s game winner #1 in NY sports history. Also, coaches who walk around and block the view for the front row…they’re-uh kinda being a little rude. What, aren’t they? I think it’s rude!
The fact that it might actually be true given the NY sports history is impressive. Specifically the moment
It’s unquestionably a top all time moment of NY sports moments with Matteaus goal in 1994, Tyree’s helmet catch, Bill Buckner’s error, Bucky Dent and Aaron Boone’s home runs. The Shot Heard Round the World, Don Larsen, the Dodgers finally winning their first title in 52, Namath, so on and so forth
Helmet catch is so hard to beat. That Patriots team was so dominate, perfect season on the line, and then the Giants happen. One of the top sports moments ever I think.
Recency bias for the Knicks. The helmet catch was against (to that point) the 18-0 greatest team in NFL history after Manning nearly got sacked. Unbelievable play by the 12.5 point underdogs.
The helmet catch still only directly hit the fandom of like 60% of New York football fans.
New York is a basketball city and the Knicks are the only sports team that truly unites almost everyone in the area.
The helmet catch was bigger on a national level and Jets fans obviously had Schadenfreude because the Patriots and Belichick lost but there are more Knicks fans than Giants & Jets fans combined in the city
Everyone in the city is a Knicks fan but the Giants and Jets get more viewers than that team, okay sure lmao. Helmet catch still beats this layup every time
Just a decade ago, the Brooklyn Nets were more popular than the Knicks. The fully-loaded Knicks bandwagon was still half-empty until Brunson came along.
Knicks ticket prices were still higher than nets prices, the nets were never more popular. At least cite a fake statistic if you’re gonna bullshit
Knicks ticket prices are based on the fact that it’s in midtown Manhattan and not…Brooklyn. The NJ Nets were not more popular than the Knicks, but when Jay-Z brought them to NYC, the Brooklyn Nets got all the headlines. They also made the postseason unlike the Knicks. There’s a reason why Linsanity is the only memory of the Knicks for most casuals in NYC since the 2000s, and that only lasted for a month.
Ticket prices are based on demand, Barclays is a 20 min subway ride from the garden trying to pin that on location is bullshit and you know it ( if you don’t why are you making these absurd assertions?). If the Nets were more popular their tickets would be more in demand than Knicks tickets and would cost more, especially because Barclays has less seats
Even if they were more successful they were never more popular. Ever. And they never will be.
Based off how our team played them in the last game of that regular season I remember there was a lot of confidence in the Giants fanbase that they were going to take care of business in that 1st Super Bowl and it wasn’t that shocking that they did.
The last game of the regular season was against the Giants, right? I don’t think the final score mattered at all. Teams rest starters before the playoffs after they’ve clinched their seeding. The undefeated Patriots had the highest scoring offense in NFL history at the time, averaging 37 points a game. The Giants barely snuck into the playoffs at 10-6. It was always David vs Goliath.
It was against the Giants and the Patriots were going all out to get the perfect record and the Giants were going all out as well.
No way this dude was around or watched that game live after making that comment.
100% recency bias
Yeah I don’t think about New York sports but when I saw helmet catch…. Yeah it’s gotta be that
Tyree’s helmet catch beats this layup every day of the week
If, like me, you’re not a Giants fan, it doesn’t do much for you, though was fun to see Brady lose
? You don’t have to be a Giants fan to appreciate the moment there. That was an all time underdog beating the greatest team in NFL history at that point. The Knicks haven’t even won anything yet, why would this even matter yet?
the Dodgers finally winning their first title in 52
Didn’t even think about the city technically holding onto some historical moments after a franchise leaves. So would Mays’s catch count too?
Bobby Thomson’s home run in 51 was a bigger deal. Until Ralph Branca died a few years ago they would still talk about it all the time until the 2010s. Though in my opinion as a Mets fan the #1 is always Bill Buckner not catching that ball. Only wish I could have seen it live.
That one was like the Knicks now, they had never won and had come so close so many times with an extremely passionate local fanbase. It was a jubilation that hadn’t been seen before. I recommend the book Boys of Summer if you’re curious about it
He may be a victim of the moment saying it’s #1 already though. The Helmet Catch is going to always be really hard to top
Larry is a Jets fan. Probably not thinking about the Giants in this context
he mentioned the tyree catch on his list
Then he’s just stupid
If they don’t blow 3-1 lead, it could definitely be in the conversation, given the historic comeback that preceded it.
I get what you’re saying but when you add the fact it was on the game sealing drive against the undefeated Pats? It’s really hard to top
A layup to win game 4 when the finals isn’t even over will never top the helmet catch moment, I’m sorry, people who truly think it does just don’t watch football
If the Knicks lose this Finals series, the OG tip-in falls out of the Top 20. Even if the Knicks win the title, it was only one game in a best of 7. The Super Bowl is one game for all the marbles. Everyone watches the Super Bowl. More NYers watched that Super Bowl than any of these Finals games.
Good chance more NYers watch the Falcons Saints play on Monday night week 4 this year than the Finals tbh, NBA pales in comparison to the NFL
Helmet catch is ranked higher, if not #1. That Patriots team was insanely dominant. 3rd and 5, like one minute left, coming off a dropped pick. The Eli sack escape and the catch, in that context and against a Boston team? Insane.
Helmet catch is #1. Nobody outside of diehard fans thought the Patriots could lose that game. The Super Bowl was simply supposed to be a formality on the way to crowning the greatest football team of all time.
But the giants don’t have the same pull as the knicks or the Yankees. A Knicks 8 is surely better than a giants 10
That’s actually hilariously false. More people watch the World Series than the NBA Finals, and no one watches either of those compared to the viewership the NFL gets. The Knicks had so much pull for 30 years right lol. People still watch the Giants when they’re trash, they find new teams when the Knicks are trash, think about that
Your argument about having more fansdoesnt mean the play is better , cause the other sports have competition for fandom in the city(yes I know the nets are around, but they relatively have little impact as other sports). Also there are a lot of people right now just on the party train that aren’t fans looking for anything to party for.
The argument is about what’s the best NY sports play in history not what is actually the better play. The NY Red Bulls could do something that is extraordinary but it wouldn’t ever be the top NY sports play because NY isn’t a soccer city. NY is first and foremost a basketball and baseball town and will always have more pull than football
It’s football, my man. Not some niche sport. Football is still absolutely huge in the city and state.
Of course it is but it’s not as big as basketball and baseball for NYC. I’m using the soccer example to show how there is a limit to certain sports even if they are popular.
Don’t think helmet catch can be above a Knicks moment like this. Half the city doesn’t care about the giants. New York is a basketball city.
Not arguing, but what about any moments from the Yankees? I did see 1 mention of Buckner, the Dodgers, but no Yankees?
My guess is the Yankees have won too much to have one moment stick out.
Makes me jealous tbh, but I get it. 😂 anyway, hope y’all bring it home
No, that’s recency bias. Knicks have only been a good team in the past couple of years (since Brunson joined). Before that, you’d have to go back 25 years to the Jeff Van Gundy era, and before him, the Pat Riley era in the early 1990s. Winning is everything in NYC, and the Knicks couldn’t hold a candle to the Yankees or even Mets. I’d even say the Brooklyn Nets were more popular than the Knicks a decade ago when they moved from NJ to Brooklyn because they were winning.
People still come to support the Giants and Yankees when they suck, when the Knicks are trash road teams fans fill MSG. It really isn’t the same. This recency bias is so hilarious to me. NY is a basketball city but half the fans of their best basketball team were rooting for the Celtics a few years ago, Warriors before that, etc.
You are very wrong. The nets were never popular with New Yorkers. Winning isn’t everything when it comes to the Knicks. We Knicks fans have been dedicated through 17 win seasons. We debated whether Frank Ntilikina was a savior or a bust. We picked apart every aspect of the draft and the lottery for years, waiting and hoping for the player that would bring us to respectability and then the promised land. MSG has always been rocking, even during the Fire Isiah years when starbury was eating Vaseline and Eddy curry was…being Eddy curry. Like I said, NYC is a basketball city and the Knicks are New York’s team. Maybe bandwagon fans don’t understand.
Let’s just say the fanbases of the Yankees, Mets, Giants, and Jets are more racially diverse than the Knicks. The Knicks fanbase is about as racially diverse as the Rangers and Islanders fanbases. 😉 And if you’re in those neighborhoods out in Long Island or Staten Island, you’d swear everyone in NYC was a fan of the Islanders or Rangers.
What are you smoking bro
Half the city weren’t Knicks fans 3 months ago
Yeah but the other half was and that’s like 4 million people
So half the city not caring about the Giants makes sense to you, but you immediately acknowledge my claim and put the Knicks in the same boat as the Giants?
If they hold on, it has a legit case.
It’s not actually true though lmao. Some layup to not even win the Finals just a comeback doesn’t beat the Giants win over the Pats/Tyree’s helmet catch. This is revisionist bs by Larry David whose been around forever and probably forgot
“The Tip” tyvm i’ll be taking checks for my royalties
Gotta give it OG’s name. That man should be immortal.
Maybe “The OG Tip”.
Maybe not. Sounds like the most sensitive part of the OG 🤣🤣🤣
why? jordan has several of these iconic moments; none of them had his name. “the shot” “the shrug”
I suppose you can argue for leaving OG’s name out of it. But I’d want it left in.
Really tho just focusing on the last shot feels wrong. It was like watching a miracle in the garden the way that team took the horrible officiating and the insane 3-point Spurs shooting in the first half and still pulled it out.
Is there another “Miracle In The Garden”?
Someone on here called it the Miracle on 33rd street
i vote that one then
That’s the perfect Larry David quote. I wouldn’t expect anything less. Those damn coaches blocking my view.
I mean and then you got the assistant coach walking back and forth yelling the same stuff the coach is yelling! Do you really need two of them? I mean I get the coach blocking the front row now and then but the assistant???
I love how clearly recognizable Larry David’s style of observational comedy is just from text
you can even see the hand gestures
It’s the sound somewhere in between yelling quietly, and talking loudly but with a hoarse voice and a lot of hands waving around
The video of him repeatedly getting blocked by coaches and refs looks straight out an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm lol
Being Larry David is great. If you’re being nice, smart, gracious or funny, they love you for it. If you’re being a grumpy old man, they love you even more.
Larry David would be a cancer on any team.
Larry: “We’re going to lose this game. I don’t know how I could be so stupid to believe we could win.”
Wemby: “We’re up by 29 points. Relax, bro.”
“I’m a half-empty kinda guy ok?” is one of my favorite quotes.
Half empty is actually the Hungarian title of Curb Your Enthusiasm!
That’s insane. Thanks for telling me this 🤣
Seeing Larry David and Ben Stiller celebrate a chip would be a positive of the Knicks winning for sure. Those guys have been loyal fans for decades
Not including Spike Lee is crazy considering he’s one of the few who showed up consistently even when they were bad.
Spike’s over here chillin’ in like 100 lbs of Knicks regalia being like, “Y he say fuck me tho?”
The other 2 guys must have much bigger schedules no? They cant make every game
But Spike Lee has been a season ticket holder for 40 years. And going to games since he was a kid when Frazier was still playing. He’s by far the #1 Knicks celebrity fan. It’s not even close.
Yeah I agree. Itll be neat to see him win too. Honestly didnt say him at first because im not as aware of Spike Lee (know who is he is i just dont think of him) as the other 2 while ive been a Ben Stiller fan since I was little
Watch “He Got Game”. Best basketball movie ever. It’s one of Denzel breakout roles. Plus Ray Allen stars also.
He got game is the best basketball movie ever made because of Ray Allen. The fact he was able to star in that movie at that time was incredible. I guess you could argue like, idk, space jam as being better, or white men can’t jump, but he got game is the basketball movie. I’m also almost 40.
If spike stopped making movies after like Bamboozled people would have nothing for love for his filmography. Hasn’t been as consistent since then but I’ll always give his movies a shot and he still makes a really good one from time to time.
25th hour in my experience is quite divisive but i respect the hell out of it, Inside Man was a really fun/good action thriller, BlacKKKlansman is just a very good movie, Da 5 Bloods is also a good movie. Even his post 2000 catalogue is mostly damn good
He also had that batshit crazy NBA 2k My career storyline about Freq that somehow ages well because of the shit 2k put out afterwards.
Man I love so many Spike films, and love that he’s such a diehard Knicks fan… but his most recent movie Highest 2 Lowest was utter and pure trash. The worst film he’s ever made. And da 5 Bloods also had huge swaths of godawful dialogue. Dude needs some people around him who will give him honest feedback. He’s capable of making truly great cinema & hasn’t been on it for a while now.
Spike Lee has made many great movies but he is a polarizing person, there are a lot of Knicks fans who don’t like him and don’t give a shit that he’s there lol.
why is he polarizing? really curious
He has a very outspoken, confrontational and abrasive persona, and his public criticisms of other artists and the film industry. And he’s always playing the race card.
For example, when he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture for Black KKKlansmen, he got up and walked out of the ceremony when Green Book won and then ranted in interviews after. It just made him look like a sore loser.
Spike has been right to use the “race card” 99.9% of the time including Green Book.
Green Book while infinitely better than that horrific offensive mess “Driving Miss Daisy” was still that white saviorism and white washing off a story and just one of the weaker best picture films of recent history.
He is/was a sore loser - but he also is/was right in what he called out
Green Book didn’t deserve to win, and most people agree on that. It was still classless of him. And Moonlight and 12 Years A Slave just won best pictures literally 2 and 4 years before that ceremony.
And I’m a fan of Spike. My dad’s a huge fan and showed me his joints growing up all the time. I’ll be excited to see him see the Knicks win.
But no, even as a fan I can say that he can be fucking annoying and abrasive and yes he does overplay the race card all the time, and I can understand why people don’t like him.
An abrasive and contrarian New Yorker. Damn. What’s next? An argumentative and emotional Redditor? Cancel their fan cards!
What even is your argument? He isn’t annoying because all Newyorkers are annoying by default? What?
What’s yours? Spike Lee can’t be acknowledged as a real Knicks fan because he said something that rubbed some people the wrong way?
Celebrities can only be tolerated if they are faultless, colourless and odourless?
The guy that has a production company called ‘40 Acres and a Mule’ has an opinion about race? That uppity…
How about an irrelevant European from Belgium? Go make some waffles.
Awww, did the American from the US get his feelings hurt?
Kanye was right too, he just addressed it in a petty and classless way.
You can not like the decision and also not be disrespectful to the people who undoubtedly worked their asses off on the film.
this is such an insanely bad take
Are the fans who don’t like him in the room with us?
No they’re at the game telling him to sit the fuck down.
Knicks fans are often fed up with him, but if you want to be disingenuous and pretend he’s universally beloved go ahead I guess.
He should really curb his enthusiasm
“Hey, that’s the name of the show!”
But everyone else? No bueno
We’re all going to bed early
Leave it to Larry David to find a way to turn a legendary game-winner into a classic complaint about basic courtside etiquette
“There are rules okay? There are rules. Unspoken ones and they know! Everyone knows and then they pretend they don’t. Like when you go downstairs in the middle of the night to get a glass of water YOU TIP TOE. YOU TIP TOE.”
18-1 clears
GW shot of the biggest comeback in NBA history. It doesn’t get much bigger than that, it’s really hard to argue
So did he say think it was….pretty….pretty good?
Classic Larry David prioritizing front-row slightlines over an iconic championship moment
I’d still give it to the helmet catch,Larry. That had two distinct preposterous ‘how the hell did that happen’ moments in one play 😂
This is just recency bias.
I’m not sure about that. if they win the series, it’s #1 in Knicks history, and given the whole sequence, I don’t think it’s even close.
It is recent bias knick moments you can argue a couple events but not number 1 ny sport moment by far
which are greater if they win?
Helmet catch gotta be in my opinion
It’s within the realm of debate certainly…I’d take the helmet catch myself but I don’t think the tip in would be wrong
I was in shock that he didn’t mention Buckner.
I’m still taking the Aaron Boone bomb. This is close though
Larry’s the best
Does he think the missed foul on the other end was the best foul in NY sports history too?
Nobody fucking cares
Terrible titke for a great post
I hate celebrities talking about sports
This Larry David. whoever he is, based on the title of this post, is little retraded
