I don’t think it’s a good call with Wemby as part of the double. Taking him that far away from the lane leaves a huge gap in the defense.

You’d rather Brunson take a contested 3 than give up the paint. The real threat from Brunson is the elbow shot, and he’s not going to get that look without driving past the defender.

Either you have Wemby guarding Brunson alone, or you have Wemby in the back and two other players doing the double team. It’s not a complicated concept to keep your best help defender back when double teaming on top.

Tbf only KAT’S fingertips kept their ATO at the end of G4 from being successful to steal the game back, they had the back side of New York’s defense cooked with a real nice screen and a player about to be waiting for the ball right at the hoop.

Sweeney was telling Wemby to switch onto the arc was insane coaching with that much time left. That’s who Wemby was looking at on the sideline during the broadcast view. and did the triple take on who he was supposed to cover, Sweeney kept pointing to go out there instead of the rim…

Brunson has had no problem shooting and making 3’s over Wemby and 6 seconds is plenty of time for him to give and go or just hesi and get by Wemby enough to get to the rim. There was no reason to have a guy who is quite possibly the greatest paint protector ever 28ft from the basket in such a close game with that much time left.

This entire loss was a whole team + coaches collapse but that particular play Sweeney is majorly at fault in not getting the defence set correctly. A lineup change shouldn’t throw a team out like that at all, not at this level and this high stake of a game.

The fact that the entire team is lost it has to be on coaching even if partially. At the very least they needed to anchor themselves on their defensive philosophy of Wemby staying around the paint and even that somehow got lost in the mix.

And when your team is this lost is it a terrible idea to use your timeout? I know you might need it for offense but the way the Spurs were set up here, they were 100% conceding a bucket somewhere. Brunson kinda bailed them out taking that terrible three but they had so many advantages it didn’t matter.

Instead he was on Brunson.

Meanwhile, the guy who defended Brunson well all series was on KAT..so if OG doesn’t get the rebound, there was actually high odds that despite Castle’s box out, KAT was going to be able to just reach over him to get the ball.

Then you have Fox, who ignored OG and doubled Brunson - at the logo.

And interestingly, as you pointed out, he was yelling at Harper. Just like it’s Harper that gets the quick hook for stupid shit the whole team (outside of Castle) was doing last game.

It’s an absolute mess.

My guess is the plan was let Brunson create a quick shot but I doubt Mike wanted it from 30.

They probably thought they’d get a quick trap and Brunson may be bothered by Wembys length.

Instead we got people saying Mike Brown outcoached Mitch Johnson on that play.

If anything Brunsons quick decision and OGs heart saved the day, not coaching.

Exactly my thoughts. And tbh thats probably the right call by Brunson a shot and a chance at the board is better than nothing.

I think he made the best decision possible considering the circumstances. I just think its much more fair to criticize Mike for putting him in that spot then Mitch for having Wemby away from the paint.

But at the end of the day, I would say its neutral. And neither coach was good or bad. One set of players executed at a slightly higher level than the other.

I agree. I criticized both and I do think Fox is ball watching a little but after seeing several replays, there’s not a lot either could do on that play.

Size criticism is fair. I suspect they didn’t think anyone else had the speed to guard the play in case it didnt start with Brunson.

If he didn’t put Wemby anywhere near Brunson and Brunson hit the shot, everyone will say even the grandma next door knew Brunson will shoot that shot, why the coach didn’t ask Wemby to challenge the shot.

The problem is other players need (and probably have been told throughout the game) to help boxout “left alone” bigs like Towns or Robinson or OG, but such spital awareness is difficult to maintain in a state of panic.

Yes, it is a coach responsibility to tell the kids what to do so that the players are less confused, but you cannot teach kids to stay calm, especially when the coach is also a rookie and having a hard time staying calm as well.
