He was California state player of the year and won the state championship and got zero D1 offers. Daryl Morrey publicly admitted that all tests said he should have been a mid first rounder and he went undrafted. If he had have been looked at objectively and developed from that stand point, he would have been a much better player. There is zero doubt his career was littered with racism, the fact he was able to succeed anyway is huge testament to him.

Lin just did a podcast and said hes felt like his career was used as a vehicle to hate on other players (harden, melo, Kobe). That he can’t be discussed do to how online fans react to any criticism or slight towards. Reddit will continually do it and not be aware of it

Regardless of how his teammates handled it, Lin’s impact on the game was massive. He inspired an entire generation of Asian hoopers and proved he absolutely belonged on an NBA court. Nothing but respect for his journey.

Even during the height of his popularity, media and local broadcasts would make off hand “asian jokes”. Ben and Jerry’s came out with a fortune cookie flavored ice cream.

If you were Asian and played basketball, everyone called you Jeremy Lin. And not always in a fun good way.

Aside from that, at least from the players, I think it was more jealously than racism. Lin became a big star BECAUSE he was Asian. It was and still is rare for any NBA player to become a star that isn’t black, and to a lesser degree white players.

Good lord everytime Jeremey Lin is brought up its never how good he is or how amazing his run was or what hes doing today but instead. “was kobe being racist” “was Jeremy Lin looked down on for being asian” Like dude im not the type of person to usually say this but there is more to Jeremy Lin than not getting along with two known difficult teammates. Its not like kobe and melo were loved by everyone else stop asking the same stupid question.

Lin has, to my knowledge, never complained about Melo. I think they had bad chemistry in the court but that’s about it.

I think in Kobe’s defence it’s far less likely he was racist and far more likely he was, once again, just an asshole.

My dad said that no one wanted an Asian player to be better than them. So I always take that as the reason why Lin wasn’t treated well in the NBA.

No, I don’t think racism played as big of a role as people make it out to be. I’m Taiwanese American just like Jeremy Lin, and I also played basketball growing up. The vast majority of players only care if you’re good at basketball or not.

I think deep down most NBA players didn’t respect what Lin did because they knew it wasn’t sustainable. Jeremy Lin wasn’t an all-star because his overall skill level wasn’t good enough.

He had a TON of flaws in his game that his athleticism was able to cover up. He had no left hand, questionable IQ, jumped in the air with nowhere to go, and he was not confident in his jump shot.

However, the elite part of Jeremy Lin’s game was his first step and driving ability. His pick and roll play was good, but his first step was truly elite. I believe he recorded a faster sprint time than John Wall in their combine.

If Jeremy Lin had the overall skills to play like Jalen Brunson, then he would have commanded respect from everyone.

About Kobe, bruh, Kobe only cared about winning and Jeremy Lin wasn’t going to help him win. So yeah, Jeremy had elite quickness and athleticism (which isn’t nearly talked about enough), but he was definitely lacking in other skill areas.

If Jeremy had gone to PG skill camps growing up, then he would have became an even better player, but basketball was just an extracurricular activity for him and academics was first.

Stereotyping w/o discrimination is not racism its prejudice. He graduated harvard, he probably got typed up as a nerd tbh. Kobe skipped college. If anything, it couldve been a youre not smarter than me move to be aggressive from kobes standpoint or a youre not harder worker. Who knows, but what I do know is sociologists definitely feel the word racism is used much more in the place of prejudice when it should be. No at least not directly. I think people didn’t like that he got so much attention compared to better players who they probably felt deserved it more and went through more hardship in life while Lin was getting labelled as a super inspirational story etc. Lin did get that attention because of him being an American Asian.

I don’t remember Yao Ming having issues with McGrady for example and I think a large part of that is that people felt like he earned his relevance and status a lot more.

If Lin turned out to be a really great NBA player I think people would have felt differently and respected him but really and truly he’s a household name because he’s an Asian American who was good for like 10 games in New York.
