I don’t think people realize how insane streaming culture for people like under the age of 25 is because its so much easier to ragebait people for a living and make millions then it is to get a real job.

I think the above post perfectly captured the issue here. Note how it was a “streamer” and not just a normal guy. When Spurs fans (I am a spurs fan myself) complain about the Knicks fans, I feel like there is a tiny bit of validity, but it is way overblown, and most of those guys in the clips are just like this streamer guy. They don’t do it out of love for their team or their sport, they do it cause it’s a massive social phenomenon that can be exploited by clout chasers and criminals to enact whatever behavior they’d like to. Sure, if it wasn’t in NYC it wouldn’t be happening like this but it’s not cause of the fans, it’s because of the reputation that follows NYC and how people inflate and exaggerate the NYC culture to be wild, violent, and passionate. It’s sort of a self fulfilling prophecy that all these streamers and fake fans mess around in NYC because it’s where all the “wild” shit happens when in reality they are 90% of the wild shit

It also just looks way cooler on TV for soccer. Watching the away team score, then run over to the section of their most hardcore fans (clubs receive an allottment of tickets for away games and then use a points system to determine which season ticket holders get them) going crazy in the corner is something else.

I’m convinced now that it’s mainly a difference in car culture. Most Americans have to drive home and beat traffic after a game, which means it’s rare for teenagers or dudes who cant afford a car to be hanging out by themselves (the demographic most likely to get into fights over a sports team). Only in New York does this not happen so you get a bunch of young guys hanging out in large masses.

Tbf this is a really, really unusual spate of violent incidents.

So far this playoffs I disliked Spurs fans for whining and disliked Thunder fans for how cocky they are but no one compares to this.

So far I’ve seen Knicks fans head stomp multiple Spurs fans, pull a yellow cab driver out of his car and make him watch while they destroyed his source of income while waving Palestinian flags and now a Spurs fan put a dude in a coma.

Millennials grew up with the Internet and didn’t really get smartphones until teenage years and later. A portion of us maybe didn’t learn responsibility and consequence of the internet but most did. That’s why “video games are bad” “the internet is dangerous” was so stupid back in the day. 

Nowadays these kids grow up in a world where content, persona and social currency are king. Movie stars, rock stars, athletes are nothing compared to streamers. Unfortunately becoming a streamer has even less to do with how good you are as a person compared to the already non-existent bar for the other famous people. So these kids will do anything to try and emulate that lifestyle and now have mass exposure to it on a daily basis.
