Mike Greenberg: “If you’re throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama… if you’re beating up people… wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace. You’re not disgracing the city, you’re disgracing yourself.”
But also the city
And your parents and your children - Charles Barkley
Parents yeah. Or the uncle yelling at you for doing stupid things.
lmao fr like it can be both
I’ve been at dodger games where dodger fans beat the shit out of SF Giant fans. I’ve seen toronto Raptor fans harass and attack GS Warrior fans.
This isn’t a city issue, this is an individual issue. Shit people all over the world in every city and every town out there. That isn’t changing. The larger the city the more likely for things to come to light.
I’m from NYC and this is the simple truth
People don’t realize more people live in NYC than houston, dallas and san antonio combined, then 2x that.
I was at a Giants game where they stabbed a Dodger fan too
an individual issue, and those individuals are men ❤️
For real. It’s hard not to like the team but their fans are making me root for the spurs.
a handful of morons always ruin things for everyone else. I promise you 99% of fans don’t act like this.
None of these “fans” were anywhere to be found when Ron Baker was a starter. I see a bunch of opportunist bandwagons. Most fans I know have a 9-5 and scoff at the idea of waiting outside a hotel for anyone
Totally agree, and it was the exact same thing for real long time Warriors fans when they got good and the whole Bay Area suddenly cared.
But I still don’t want those “fans”, real or not, to be happy.
Ron baker mentioned !
Ron Baker Shot Maker Erasure
[removed]
What? They don’t care if they are disgracing themselves or the city.
It doesn’t mean they aren’t disgracing themselves and the city.
No shit but Greeny doesn’t get to declare that it doesn’t reflect on the city of NY because it does
“You’re a disgrace to your team and the league itself”
They’re really just confirming a stereotype we always knew existed in new york
Hornets fans would never do this because we don’t exist.
Same cries in Supersonics
As a life long Blazers fan I would like to state for the record we miss our I5 rivals to the north and pray you get your team back.
Edit: spelling.
We are on the horizon for resurrection, can’t wait to play you soon fam 🫡
Right back at ya. 😘
tbh i feel like with all the sonics gear i see around seattle, it would not shock me at all if there was a larger active base of supersonics fans than there are hornets fans.
Very true. Shit I was in Spokane recently and I saw TONS of Sonics gear; almost more than Gonzaga gear 🤯
I am the worlds only clippers fan and if I do stuff like this I get taken to a mental health facility
You are already being taken to the mental health facility just for being a Clippers fan, if you do stuff like that they give you the special padded room.
He’s on his 7th visit and the 8th is free due to membership rewards.
I mean they’re my #2/local team but there are dozens of us! Dozens!
Kon Knueppel fans exist
Is that because Lamelo has ran all of them over with his car?
I’m of those who believe if the hornets or panthers ever won a championship the national guard would have to be brought into Charlotte. We’re a sleeping giant that would devolve into chaos, similar to a 8inch snowstorm
stop flagellating yourself for reddit karma
It’s pathetic. Way too many people on here do this
Its cringe tbh. Maybe if things keep looking up, they will go to another fanbase.
Hornet players is a different story though.
Hornets fans exist.
So do lame ass “hornets fans” who come into Reddit to trash their own team and fanbase for upvotes
NYC almost has the same population as the state of NC dude. There are so many people here that you’re going to see even a few thousand of these morons taking advantage of the moment to go out and cause some chaos.
Its less than 1% of “fans” doing shit like this.
Brother he’s making a dig at the Hornets here
He also doesn’t know that NYC’s population would double if all the people in NC moved back to NYC where most of us came from (not me). /s
There’s also around 30 million just outside NYC in metro areas who are massive fans as well. Including Northern parts of NJ. Like, older people who left the city to live lives and have families who’ve been fans since late 80s/90s who want nothing to do with the 1% of virgin jerkoffs who started watching the Knicks 3 months ago and feel they can go stomping around the city causing havoc and giving a bad name to longtime fans. They need to be arrested and locked up for a while.
They aren’t embarrassing the team, the city, or other longtime fans. Just themselves, their shitstain cohorts, and their families.
I even had the ugly ass Larry Johnson converses w the react juice to match my starter jacket😔
Charlotte loves basketball but they just root for other NBA teams that isn’t the Hornets
A majority of Knicks fans agree. Unfortunately that’s overshadowed by what’s happening after every game. Such a shame
And the ownership not bothering to issue a statement denouncing it, instead blaming the Mayor certainly doesn’t help.
Dolan is such an ass
Quick, someone get V. Stiviano on the phone and see if she can help take down Dolan too.
He’s too busy getting the suite deep cleaned from spray tan stains and the smell of shit.
Nah hes basking in it
I read Dolan’s statement as defending the behavior, it was insane
Frankly I’m sure Dolan wants it to be even worse as justification for his buddy Trump to send ICE into the city
I agree 100%, there needs to be more accountability across the board
Let’s be honest, those animals won’t be the ones not doing stupid stuff because the team issued out a statement.
You’re not wrong it’s just something that takes the smallest amount of effort on the teams part. It’s pretty weak they can’t even be bothered.
Makes one wonder if the Knicks Organization approves of it or is OK with it
Videos of people attacking spurs fans, looting stores/robbing people, etc are going to go more viral than Knicks fans celebrating. Sucks because then people just generalize the entire fan base
The more viral they go the more copycats will follow suit. Young dudes thinking they are invincible in a mob looking for an excuse to get wasted and just act like Complete degenerates without consequences
They join a mob to try to avoid consequences, and then when they do get in trouble they claim, “I didn’t want to do it! They made me!” as though they were mind controlled by Krang or something.
It’s exactly why I started disliking those Sidetalk videos and copycats. It’s getting out of hand with people just acting up for the sake of the camera and arent even fans.
You’re right, there’s absolutely confirmation bias. I’d assume just about every clip recorded and posted of this is going viral, because of how much people are reacting to it. I smoked a joint and went to bed, that ain’t going viral. Regardless, this is a terrible look for all Knicks fans and it can’t just be talked away. There is some group mentality going on, specifically with younger people in the city, but this has been way too much
There are plenty of videos showing peaceful Knicks fans celebrating and in general just having a good time but those don’t go viral I guess
The one tried lighting a Spurs fans hair on fire
Didn’t just try, I saw that video I think you’re talking about and her hair was in fact on fire
There’s actually two separate videos: one video where a guy tries lighting another guy’s hair on fire while he’s not looking, but fails. And then one video that you’re referencing where a woman’s hair was already on fire when the video started. The first video made it to the front page of this sub yesterday.
We might have seen two different ones.
A real two nickels situation
As a Celtics fan that has been called trash throughout my entire fandom, I have zero sympathy. I’ve never seen Boston fans do anything close to what I’ve seen out of NY the past few days, either.
Most fanbases don’t go to this level, and it’s even more crazy because they haven’t won shit yet.
I can only imagine the chaos on the street if they win the entire thing.
Eagles fans threw snowballs at a drunk guy in a Santa outfit 60 years ago and every sports network still brings it up.
Yes but thats how it should be because celebrating without assaulting is normal as anything
And people setting others on fire over a basketball game does seem like something we ought to talk about as a society
Videos of people attacking spurs fans, looting stores/robbing people, etc are going to go more viral than Knicks fans celebrating.
It’s meant to be that though, the looting videos, the spurs fans getting beat up are all footage from kick streams.
Social media makes it easier to hate and not to think
It just sucks seeing some of those threads really get anti-knicks fanbase, like pretty viciously deriding the entire city and fanbase like these people are representative of us.
Maybe it’s embarrassing of me to say but it kinda hurts my feelings, a lot of ours I think. These people are embarrassing and taking away a moment from us that we’ve been waiting a long time for, like why do I need to spend my energy defending myself just for rooting for my team? Why do I need to make it clear I don’t want to light Spurs fans on fire? I shouldn’t have to be doing that.
I was in Manhattan last night and as far as I could tell, 90% of this stuff was started by either kids (mostly in masks/sheistys) or livestreamers. Roving packs of 10-15 twenty something year olds battling it out to see who can get the most attention.
still, unfortunately, a reflection of the city. Over my four years walking packs of dogs in Manhattan, I can’t tell you the number of times I came across people, mostly kids, filming ticktock dances out in the open, often blocking the sidewalk.
Though I’ve always felt for the kids that grow up in nyc, there’s nothing like the yards and cul-de-sacs and woods that most kids get in their lives.
The loudest people color the perception unfortunately.
It doesn’t matter what it is. If the worst subsection of a group is the loudest part then that’s what the entire group is going to be perceived as.
I really wish more people realized this. Social media algorithm pushes the most engaging/enraging stuff to the top. And these little jerks do it because they know they’ll get attention and don’t care who they hurt.
social media got people acting stupid in order to make “content”
There are bad apples in every fanbase, when crimes are this rampant it reflects poorly on Knicks fans and the city for not stopping it
I’m realizing in real time how the right wing media has convinced people who have never visited new york that the city is a nightmare hellscape. People watch a handful of awful videos and decide “that must be what all of new york is like!”
“You can’t even ride the subway anymore, the crazies will push you onto the tracks!”
“You can’t even wear a spurs jersey without getting attacked by a mob!”
It’s the same thing. Come visit yall will see this city is great and very welcoming.
It’s definitely disgracing the city as well. So many people wanted the Knicks to win until their fans started acting the way they are.
Said this exact thing this morning to my wife.
I prefer when nobody thinks about them and they just keep to their own redacted selves.
That’s me. 100%, I was happy with NYK winning but now..? Fuck them.
Ya ngl I was so hyped they won last night but seeing these fans, I’m rooting for a second 3-1 comeback now.
Yeah but all those people also saw tens of thousands of fans be good, peaceful, law abiding citizens on live television as well. They’re choosing to cherry pick for a very small sample size and then generalize/extrapolate to the whole. That says more about them because that’s pretty much the principle behind racism, antisemitism, etc
“You’re weak, you’re out of control, and you’ve become an embarrassment to yourself and everyone else”
“Was it barkin’?”
She must have crawled under there for warmth.
53 years in the can, not a fuckin peep
He was a disgrace, Gary Cooper?
Who’s speaking is somebody speaking?
I said my piece Chrissy.
When I came in to open up one morning there you were with your head half in the toilet, your hair in the toilet water… disgusting.
and to your family name and your entire family
The crowds are a perfect excuse for these morons to do shit and get away with it. New York’s population is a double edged sword cuz these dudes hide in the cracks
They aren’t hiding man. They’re out there in huge groups trying to cause issues for anyone they can cause issues for.
you know what he means, they hide in the cracks until they show themselves
These guys aren’t even hiding they’re doing it for clout with their livetream tags in the videos.
I understand they’re small in relation to the entire NYC population but idk if we can consider these “fringe groups” anymore when theres entire mobs of these people and there’s so many separate recorded incidents coming out after literally every game
When you have a population of 9M in a tiny radius, several hundred is fringe.
People generally can’t comprehend scale very well.
It’s the same reason folks who never leave their tri-county area think every decent-sized city is a “warzone”
Im in Brooklyn, which alone has more people than San Antonio, and the atmosphere is entirely good vibes.
It’s ugly, but the reality is that millions of people are very divorced from the goons going to Midtown solely to be a part of the shithousery & thus don’t really care. It’s like asking people to care about Times Square being a shitshow on NYE, it’s unfortunate but not exactly surprising news.
when i lived in brooklyn my mom would text me or call me freaking out about incidents in the bronx. id have to tell her thats like her freaking out about a shooting in buffalo when she lived in albany.
They sound exactly like people who aren’t from the US unable to comprehend just how huge the country is.
Whenever people visit me out here for the first time, the very first thing they say is how they didn’t realize how huge this city was until they began the flight descent down over the boroughs and it just keeps going and going. You could have 20 mobs of people out there and it still wouldn’t accurately represent what a New Yorker is. More people in NYC fish then join these mobs, doesn’t mean this is a fisherman’s town.
Being from CA, I just couldn’t understand it until I lived there.
It’s a perfect storm of the Knicks winning, it being 90 degrees out when crime spikes, and it taking place in an area of Manhattan that can already be a bit squirrelly.
We still got nothing on the Europeans. Not even close to Paris after PSG won
not trying to defend what’s happened in NYC but Europe is so different it’s kind of silly to even compare. Europe has legit right wing fan groups that cause trouble. We have moron kids. It is not the same.
It’s 0.01% of the fanbase and the other 99.9% are equally disgusted by it. And unfortunately because he’s getting so much attention, more violent scumbags are doing it for the attention.
NYC’s population is more than twice as large as the second most populous city (LA). It’s roughly almost on par with LA+Chicago+Houston. Let that sink in.
And a lot of it is in a small, dense area, especially when it comes to where Madison Square Garden is located.
And NY has way lower crime/violence rates than any of those cities. NY has less crime than San Antonio.
Most of those fans never watched a single NBA game all season. They’re just using this as an opportunity for mayhem.
100%
LA lady here but same shit is going down right now with people responding to tourists coming in for the World Cup tomorrow. Ripping down banners, saying dumb shit… unfortunate part of living in a large metro area
They’re disgracing the city too
He’s right.
nah they are for sure also disgracing the city. dude was just scared to talk shit about the city because he doesnt want someone to try to light him on fire next time hes in new york.
He is in New York while filming this video.
That’s some “Fox News dooming about NYC in a broadcast from NYC” energy right there
You’re disgracing the city too
Edit: I want to add that my wife is currently visiting NYC. She’s new to understanding the hype around the NBA playoffs so she was super excited about the prospect of going to a bar for the game last night. She decided she didn’t feel safe so she watched it in her room where she’s staying.
Great work Knicks fans. Really winning people over.
New York has legit never felt safer or friendlier to me. Dont get Fox News’d into letting .01 percent of fans is the reality out there
Oh she loves the city and was out all over all week late at night by herself several times too. Just not wanting to get near a ridiculous mob
Big Knicks fan here. I wouldn’t want to go outside near a mob that crazy as well. A lot of us don’t condone that shit.
Sorry she felt that way, but as someone mentioned, there are also some safe spots she could’ve seen the game outside or at an establishment. But yeah, the very loud, dangerous, vocal minority is the one causing this damage.
I was in NYC last week and I felt pretty safe and walked by myself plenty at night, but as someone who doesn’t exactly cheer for the Knicks, I think it’s valid to want to stay away when Knicks were playing.
[deleted]
No shit boss.
My wife is a small woman alone in a city that’s not her home in a country that’s not her home country and she just saw a bunch of videos of people going fucking wild. It’s 100% reasonable for her to not feel safe going out in that shit.
Ignore the other clowns. Odds are your wife would be perfectly safe but I completely understand why she wouldn’t want to be out there. I hope she has a lovely time in the City.
On her way back now. Had a blast. Enjoy your championship
They are still disgracing the City
Not a Knicks fan, but it’s crazy how even the many Knicks fans and NYC residents who condemn the behavior of any violent fans get dragged into this shit. What would you like them to do? Should they get on the streets and fight crime? Develop technology to read minds so they can figure out ahead of time that an egg would be the implement of an attempted crime?
Nearly all Knicks fans and NYC residents were at home, peacefully minding their own business. And, if we’re going to blame everyone in a city for the worst behavior that occurs in that city, then a lot of glass houses are screwed.
You got it. Someone was concern trolling in our subreddit the other day talking about how we need to help the police. Like what the fuck? I’m not gonna stop watching games on my couch and instead go try to fight crime as a vigilante. The 0.01% of our fanbase that’s roaming the streets of Midtown are the only ones interested in doing the crazy shit, the rest of us are trying to avoid them too.
Mfer wanted you to go be Spiderman lmao
Answer: Batman
As true as that is. Nothing will change unless the people are punished
This. As a country we’ve become to leniant on this type of behaivor.
These people are filming themselves assaulting, looting, and throwing shit at people over a sports game. I don’t think they understand disgrace.
Here’s the thing: it’s not over a sports game. The sports game is an excuse for a bunch of young morons to go out and cause havoc. They don’t care if the Knicks won or lost, they just want to livestream or tiktok mayhem.
It’s all fun until there is a fatality. All of them need to do better.
Yeah I was just thinking what happens when a mob swarms a dude who’s carrying? The south isn’t exactly polite for no damn reason those boys strapped.
The guys ripping jerseys and fighting outside MSG I can see true Knicks fans point since those type of people know it will be like a riot like atmosphere outside the arena after a game and want to start shit. But the people waiting outside the hotel that the visiting team stays at are 100% Knick fans and deserve to be labeled as piece of shit fans for the egg throwing.
I need you to put a comma in here somewhere.
No you will read my bad grammar diatribe and you’ll like it!
Some of them are absolutely Knicks fans. That doesn’t mean they represent or speak for the other 99.9% of Knicks fans.
Many aren’t even wearing Knicks gear, which is kind of wild considering it’s a situation where nearly everyone in NYC is repping Knicks gear.
They could be Knicks fans, but they are criminals too. Mamdani needs to make a public statement denouncing this and ordering investigations and arrests. Im a Knicks fan since McAdoo
Totally agree but these losers don’t care this is what they want. Fucking scum
They are disgracing the city in 2026 because 1 bad apple in a group of millions still gets labeled as a “knicks fan”. Remember when the Thunder got labeled after a fan mocked Luka courtside when he got injured? That’s the internet for you 2026.
Ain’t even an internet thing, it’s a media thing and a human thing. Philly fans were labeled one of the worst fanbases in sports largely for one incident that went down in the sixties. Most sports fans I’ve met will have some strong opinion on “oh THAT fanbase is the worst” based on, generously, a handful of experiences they had. We love to generalize, and this stuff will right or wrong likely be used as ammo against Knicks nation for a long time. Internet does amplify though it, for sure, lord knows you get a lot of it on Reddit.
Fine, I’ll be the one to soak up all the downvotes. I find it strange, not ONCE, have I heard it discussed how I’ve only seen men doing this. Not a single woman in any of these videos. Yet somehow, this is not being considered a male issue.. and is somehow about the city of new york or sports fans in general.
The common denominators of this kind of behavior are not the city or sport (as an eagles fan), it’s group of men/young boys who are ‘sports fans’ that treat these events as opportunities to assault people and perform ‘masculinity’ as they perceive it, which is aggression and impulsivity.
This is just male violence. There are women who watch sports. I don’t see them doing this. If you are so secure in being a man and being a sports fan, you should have no problem calling out what you see with your own two eyes. This behavior reflects poorly on men everywhere and those who don’t stand up to it, call it out as a male issue, or try to stop it are by definition, complicit in it.
If you are gonna downvote tho, do me a favor and reply with videos of female sports fans assaulting people outside sports arenas. I’ll happily wait, maybe if I’m lucky there will be a single video like that which exists.
You’re 100% correct. Maybe part of the problem is that people act like female sports fans barely exist (as evidenced by the number of times I’ve been called “bro” on here).
If you want to point out the gender, then it’s only natural you point out the race too.
Which is, personally, why I won’t point out the gender.
100% agree
He would be the first guy to talk about it if anything remotely similar happened in Philly
Eagles fans have entered the melee chat
Mobs of Philly fans don’t go around after games beating up people in opposing jerseys trying to get internet clout. This shit is way worse than anything Philly fans do.
You’re right—they are inside the stadium, where I’ve seen people with opposing jerseys spit on and punched. There’s a reason why the Vet had a jail. I’m not remotely defending Knicks “fans,” I’m just validating the reputation of certain Philadelphia fans.
They’ve always been like this, NY weirdly has better pr when it comes to other northeastern sports fanbase (Philly/boston) but they’re just as if not more degenerate just due to size and also lack of self-awareness.
The same type of person to generalize an entire state based on a few people’s actions in Memphis, OKC, New Orleans, etc
I mean, way more people vote red in Oklahoma than go out and beat people up after the Knicks win in NYC.
If you think voting republican makes you a racist (which, to be fair, I do), then that’s about 1 million racists in Oklahoma (state population of 4 million, ~50% voter turnout, >50% vote republican) vs. probably a few hundred or a few thousand legit rioters and looters in NYC after all this.
Shit, there’s way more republicans in NYC than people out breaking shit.
Florida
Yeah no shit man. Got any more flaming hot takes for us?
🎤 “Excuse me for a second. Can we stop throwing eggs and assaulting fans and let these guys play? It’s not who we are.”
It is a disgrace and so shitty that anyone would assault anyone or break stuff because of a game. Fuck any Knick fan doing that
I agree- but to be honest, none of those people doing that stuff care
>“If you’re throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama… if you’re beating up people… wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace
the way op phrased this is saying wearing spurs jersey is disgraceful lol
Disgrace and pure trash!
Glad he said they’re not disgracing the city, they’re disgracing themselves.
99% of Knicks fans are normal every day people like any other fanbase. What these people are doing is unacceptable, and all the rabid hate for Knicks fans as a whole isn’t called for.
Doesnt matter you shouldnt throw eggs at anyone for a sports game jeez
The clowns are going to provide the RNC with clips that will be used for decades
It’s rather unfortunate that these losers make the rest of the Knicks look bad (fans and organization alike). When in reality, the players and coaches of the Knicks are likeable and easy to root for.
Also fun to see Spike Lee celebrating on courtside.
Wow so brave!
…but still, you’re kind of disgracing the city as well, unfortunately
It sucks. I think there are millions of Knicks fans who are genuinely passionate and very proud of their team. Unfortunately, there are a**holes out there who will ruin the mood by being terrible to others, especially to the opposing players.
Hell no you’re also disgracing the City too
Yikes. This is such a bad look. But also, it’s a huge security vulnerability. If it’s this easy to egg him, it could be just as easy to shoot him… considering this is America
It always sucks when this type of thing happens because only a few people can do something like this but it will cause scrutiny over the entire fan base that has nothing to do with it.
NYPD wont do shit
I REALLY like the fact that he made the distinction. I get the fact that when these things happen people want to say he’s making the team, or city or fans look bad. But really they are just making themselves look bad.
I think 1% of the American population is responsible for 60-65% of all violent crime prosecutions. Repeat offenders. You know the people you read about every now and then, who end up killing someone, and then everybody’s surprised how they’ve been in front of a judge 50+ times before that and they’re still running around free causing havoc.
1% is not a lot, but I gotta believe a big chunk of that 1% is from NYC, no?
Anyway, these people are not listening. LOCK ‘EM UP! THROW AWAY THE GODDAMN KEY!
What a hot take. Thank God Mike Greenberg is here to bring us all to our senses.
You actually are also disgracing the city
I’m pretty sure they’re bringing it on the city too.
this is why i enjoy the game in the comfort of my own home or a nearby beer garden/pub with my friends and avoid the city like the plague during this entire run
“Somehow things don’t go without saying anymore” is a banger and sadly true
What I don’t understand how there is videos of everything and everyone, if any of these dipshits keyed Doland’s car, they’d immediately be found by the cops.
Yet here… Nothing.
Cops only exist to protect capital, not people.
This vitriol coming from those dick heads really ruins some of the positive vibes I had for NYC. I like their team, I hate that we’re losing against them but it would not at all piss me off to see this team win a title.
But these degenerates….
Unfortunately, we’re disgracing the city as well. Only saving grace is if these people are dealt with accordingly and not just given a slap on the wrist. If you’re assaulting people you need to go to jail its that simple.
None of these “fans” watch Greeny 😐. He’s straight up talking to the people that aren’t doing this stuff
When Knicks fans show you who they are, believe them.
Knicks fans in here downvoting everything.
What, no Spurs fans handy to be beating up?
“Disgrace” is putting is too mildly. You’re a criminal.
I keep hearing it’s just a few bad eggs and not to blame all NY fans which is technically true but I don’t see any other cities doing shit like this.
They’re 100 percent disgracing the entire city & the entire fan base.
