Sometimes a child come out of the factory wrong. But in most cases, terrible parents raise terrible children that will most likely grow up to be terrible adults.
Iâm a middle school teacher. Parent teacher conferences are often when things make the most sense. Good kids tend to have good parents. Shit head students tend to have shit head parents. My prinicpal always says âkids are just apples that fall from treesâ.
A friend of mine who’s a public elementary school teacher has parents who think it’s not their duty to teach their kids and go full Karen on them. It’s sad that these people are allowed to have children.
Yeah I have endless stories. Teachers learn very quickly which parents are worth communicating with and which ones are best to just not call.
I once had a white mother tell me her white son was a victim of my racism. She said I was racist for writing up her 13 year old son when he told me âgo fuck yourselfâ in class. This conversation was over the phone so she couldnât see that I am a white man. When I told her Iâm white too, she paused, told me to go fuck myself, and hung up. Apples and trees man.

You pick your battles and you keep your expectations tethered to reality. I teach in a rough district. My students come from poverty, crime, food insecurity, and dysfunction. Theyâre victims of their circumstance, but I can only do so much as their 7th grade science teacher. When a parent cusses me out after their kid cussed me out I just shrug and move on.

i’ve taught in both really rough school districts, and incredibly affluent private schools.
The rough kids are heartbreaking, because a lot of times they are victims of circumstance, and you have a lot of tragic moments. The school can often deal with them better though, as when they do stuff that is bad, it’s pretty bad.
Affluent kids are neglected, entitled little princes and princesses. Their parents cater to their every whim, and they get away with everything because mom and dad are literal billionaires, so the school kisses their asses. It’s frustrating.
Both groups have mostly ok kids who are trying to just get through the world, and usually pretty fun. My worst day as a teacher is usually better than my best day in corporate world. I will say that I like my rich schools more because at least I’m paid well, and have a good budget.

I’ve worked with youth in emotional distress before in my career. Dozens of kids/families. The number of times the kid was the problem I can count on one hand and EVERY time it had a genetic component that accounted for a lot of the behavior.
95% of the time it’s the parents who were being absolutely horrific to their kids and running a house of terror.
I respect you as a teacher, and what you say is mostly true, but I can tell you a lot of it is also just the personality you’re born with. And of course personality is genetic, but I have two kids, twins even, and one is pretty nice and one is pretty mean spirited, and they’re not just siblings but raised by the same parents at the exact same time.
That said, both kids would be considered good kids by teachers, so at least they show some respect.
