My guess is that it’s a subset of Knicks fans who get caught up in trying to go viral or just looking for excuses to get violent. I am a Knicks fan who knows quite a number of Knicks fans and we are all appalled by the violence going on.

There’s a small segment of society who just want violence and to fuck shit up. This is their excuse. Same shit happened when they attached themselves to BLM protests in 2020 and did some crazy rioting and looting.

Unfortunately Knicks fans are far from the only fans to physically attack people over sports. There’s a problem - a global one - with toxicity and hooliganism among sports fans. (It holds true across teams, ethnicities, income levels etc. but the perpetrators are almost 100% men.) I just wish more of these comments singling out Knicks fans were actually worried about the larger problem.

European soccer fans brawl in the streets after games. Vancouver Canucks fans flipped cars and set them on fire. Pistons fans literally walked onto the court to instigate shit with players. A soccer match between El Salvador and Honduras was the catalyst for an entire war.

Sports fandom makes some people do stupid and violent shit. Doesn’t matter what the city, team, sport, or country may be. It’s a societal problem. You’re asking the wrong question.

I have nothing but respect for Spurs fans. The Tim Duncan Spurs could have turned them into Patriots fans but it didn’t.

I roll my eyes every time I see these X are not X fans. Bad people and good people are fans. It’s as crazy as claiming soccer hooligans aren’t fans of their teams when their issue isn’t that they aren’t fans, but their fandom is fanatical.

And all teams have bandwagoners or casuals, and not all teams cause trouble to this extent. So this isn’t a real fan or fake fan problem. And how much someone loves a team doesn’t dictate how good of a person they are.

Which is why these not real fans claims needs to be retired.

he shouldn’t be concerned with how it plays to outsiders, he’s trying to reach his intended audience. Adding in the foul comment and the on court stuff gets it more views and gives him more credibility in the eyes of the kind of people actually jumping spurs fans or cheering it on

If he’s trying to reach those people, some PR speak statement condemning the actions and nothing more will not work as well as this approach. Not that this statement will change everything but it would change even less if it sounded like a classic holier than thou politicians condemnation “cease this savagery this instant” vs “I feel you but chill out on all that”

This goes against the message he is trying to convey, that’s the very stuff that gets these people (unrightfully) going crazy.
