It was wild to me how before the Finals some people (Bill Simmons) tried painting this match up as a 2011 style match up, where the country would get behind the beloved Knicks.
While I don’t think fans would dislike the Knicks themselves the fanbase makes it so hard to see casual fans supporting them like the 2011 Mavs.
I say this as someone who has always lived in Jersey/NYC, whose friends are all Knicks fans. The only local team I root for is the Mets and I’m willing to acknowledge the NY area fanbase is just as obnoxious as Philly, Boston, LA and other cities with perceived asshole fanbases.
Edit: Although I will admit A LOT of the people roaming the streets doing this are bandwagon hoppers just looking for an excuse to be an asshole. We have a lot of frontrunners here who suddenly give up on teams like the Rangers when they suck or dust off their Yankees hat when they make the World Series.
