Chauncey Billups summarizing the central issue with Carmelo as a player. “Scoring 30 meant to much too Melo”.
That’s funny he would be upset with a win and only 20 pts but be happy when he got his 30 but with a loss. Explains his career arc other than team USA.
Pretty damning tbh, considering that Chauncey was actually his teammate in Denver and thus shared a locker room with him.
Was a huge part of his most successful team
And NY, briefly.
One of my favorite New York Knicks players of all time, despite how short his tenure was
Melo encapsulated: Porzingis gets a clean open look from the arc to put the Knicks up in the waning seconds of a tied mean fuck all game for the sorry ass Knicks season at such point, bricks it, only for opposing team to then grab the board and run it down the other end and steal the game on a buzzer beater bunny cus Melo chose to play traffic cone defense on contesting it out of frustration he weren’t the one to have otherwise bricked the potential go ahead bucket instead of a rookie porzingis who had every basketball decision, right and displayed talent to have iced it on 9 other occasions out of 10, and would have then been a major growth moment for his development, motivation and encouragement to play for the Knicks and basketball in general. But instead Melo elect to throw the game and throw his arms up in general frustration over losing the game when HE was responsible for it lmao
Brother logged on and wrote the world’s longest sentence
I’m more intrigued by their choice of comma placement than whatever they had to say. Forgo commas and periods for a while, randomly throw one in-between “decision” and “right”, uses an Oxford comma, declines the Oxford comma. Decides to finally end the sentence just to tag something on that would typically
Is there a sub for breakdowns of grammatically insane reddit posts? Reading this was cathartic as hell lol
Funny enough, I prefer people write like that because you at least know you’re engaging with an actual person rather than a bot
Is an Oxford comma still an Oxford comma if it comes before an “and”, but not after 2 or more things listed in succession? So I presume the Oxford comma you mention is the one before “and”, and the lacking comma (development, motivation and encouragement) should be after motivation? Yay grammar. On Reddit a person can low key learn anything haha
lol and lmao are the millennial . and ! lol
It’s like a badly translated German novel.
There’s a period in there. Just not at the end of the post, ironically. That’s 2 sentences.
I ran out of breath reading it in my head.
He also put an end to linsanity when he came back from injury
He also stated, “She’s married, I’m not.” In justification of his infidelity to LaLa. Stop snitchin’ at its finest
When melo scored 20 or 22 he was mad, but when jlin scored 20 or 22 he was really mad
At least I know this isn’t AI
Discomforting sensation, no?
We are not talking about practice.
Jesus Christ this was a slog to read
No one is putting a bullet to your head to do so. Why is it so troubling for you to, like, not read things that are slogs? I wouldn’t waste my time doing as much if something came across that way to me, much less then comment about how I chose to do something I didn’t have to do and now I’m upset with another for actions taken of my own accord. Y’all got some odd priorities.
goddamn. another novel. my dude is verBOSE.
Ask chat to summarize maybe?
I wouldn’t waste my time
Proceeds to waste their own time typing out an essay rebuttal to a reddit comment
It took me less than 30 seconds to write that while sitting on a fucking metro. Also you’re literally wasting your time right now. What a dumb ass circular statement.
Very cool! It took me less than 10 seconds to write that while sitting on fucking metro north. Also you’re literally wasting your time right now. Who cares!
Having just finished reading this reply of a novel, it seems we agree then? So like, what’s the big deal here?
Just passing time on the dumbass train, nothing more to it
Again, seems like we agree and are perhaps more similar than different lol
Lol if it makes you feel any better this wasnt hard to read at all
Makes sense, we’ve seen that in other players. Their goal is their own personal glory, and winning only matters to the extent that it increases that glory. If winning means passing the ball or doing something other than being the center of attention, they will shut down and not care or even passive-aggressively tank the team. There are other players who, when they had to pass the ball, would stand at halfcourt to deliberately screw up the offense or another guy who would stand right next to the ballhandler to get in the way and bring his own defender over to try to force his teammate to give the ball back to him.
It’s 100% true. Know another player on the Melo Knicks that told me this same thing a decade ago
Yep can confirm, Melo told me himself
adam silver’s my dad
Was it Fillburt Holster-Schrewsburry by any chance?
Aka no one told this guy anything.
Happy to be my a large sum this was real. Name your price, and I’ll collect my winnings laughing
I heard the same thing from my bff in denver.
Melo had the green light on 3s for team USA. I was excited that offseason when he went off the summer before joining OKC
Olympic Melo would have been Top 30 ever NBA if not higher.
Olympic Melo was who the NBA got. He was against inferior defenders and his stupid long 2’s were worth an extra point on international 3 point lines. He couldn’t be doubled because all his teammates were stars. Melo was a waste of talent.
Olympic was the best of Melo because it seemed like he actually cared and hustled, and while yes he had a green light he didn’t mind as much if he didn’t get his numbers compared to NBA. He didn’t mind as much the other players getting their shine. He wasn’t bitching about maybe coming off the bench or possible low minutes in a game. This was a big much talked about thing at the time and all stuff that severely hindered his NBA legacy.
He just couldn’t stuff his ego when his teammates weren’t some iteration of the Dream Team. Pretty much all the way til the end of his career when not even his friends in the league would help him get a 15th spot.
Lauded long time vets are cherished, if they know they’re role and can think of the team first. And he was lauded for his international game as one of if not the most decorated and involved US player ever I think with 6 medals.
Ima be honest nobody gives a f about US Olympic basketball so long as we don’t lose lol. It only matters then
He cared and hustled but his job was easy as fuck. When he had a difficult task we saw thw results.
BRO I’ve heard this exact story with the exact lines “sad about 20pts and a W but happy about 30 and a loss” yet ppl got the nerve to even think melo is a better player then Brunson smh melo isn’t even top 30 if we being real he never accomplished anything he was just a early 2000’s demar derozan(demar is better imo)
I’ve seen some dumb shit in this sub but demar over Melo might take the cake
Melo is better but one conference final in his whole career is kind of telling
Shit Atleast demar is going to care a lil about winning rather then js scoring
you do not know these people man!!! You don’t know their motivations outside of hearsay and random sound bites
I’ll still take demar over melo doesn’t matter if u think who’s better because it’s just my opinion
Nah fam, I’m a certified Melo and Demar hater. Melo clears Demar.
Melo isn’t remotely close to top 30. That’s an impressive list!!!!
Were you actively watching basketball around 2010? Melo was considered a top 5 player in the league every single year.
Demar?
The sub is onto its newest anti circle jerk because of Jeremy Lin and Melos apparent beef with each other.
The anti Melo circle jerk has existed for years on the sub
Melo was top 5 in MVP voting one time. He was never 1st team All-NBA.
No I was born 2005 and started watching basketball around 2014
You didn’t need to say that, we all see the Warriors flair
I’ve said it before, but I’ll never forget that time Calderón hit a game winner for the Knicks and Carmelo was pissed he wasn’t the one to shoot it instead of happy or relieved they won
lol damn
https://youtu.be/a7Eik_rrJiU?si=_Zq1tOhOTk5CbgkX
Tbf he only took it out on himself and his own standards according to this. Doesn’t seem to take it to his teamates, seems like a self expectations thing
BROTHER, one of my favorite movie quotes of all time embodies this.
“You’d rather look good and lose rather than look bad and win”.
Where did the idea that Melo wasn’t a winner come from? Why do people brush over him being a national champion and Olympic champion?
Come on, man… you know the answer. He wasn’t a winner in the NBA.
True, you can win off just raw talent in college and in the Olympics, especially before competition caught up internationally
In the NBA, every other team is talented, and the top tier teams all of equivalent or better superstars, so the deciding factor is everything else
Melo’s playstyle wasn’t good for winning a championship in the NBA, he held the ball too much and took inefficient mid range jumpers while playing poor defense.
And remember, to be an Olympic champion (while extremely honorable), in many years has been a wash for NBA players. Americans are expected to win. Plus he’s not the only star and leading the charge like he would on his home team. They’ve got 14 other superstars/all-stars all playing at a high level. Does he deserve credit, absolutely. But we can’t pretend in terms of legacy, a gold medal is on par with an NBA championship.
Umm…did you see the quote or video at all?
How did you flipped the “To”s”
Flip not flipped
I realized that lol, I caught it late, and couldn’t edit the title.😅
You should of proofread it.

2 MUCH 2 MELO
This is why I got downvoted when I said he’s awful commentator and was selfish from game 1 to his last. Don’t care what the fuck he has to say.
He reads a stat line with the best of them, though, right down to the +/-, without an iota of commentary or insight. He’s not good at television.
We’ve gone past the tipping point of ex-players/coaches as commentators.
I’m with you, he adds nothing to a panel.
Sunglasses. He adds sunglasses.
He’s the most overrated superstar of my life. I can’t stand that he’s in the HoF for being a one-way, black hole of a player.
Bball HoF includes college and Olympics. It’s also not that selective. Melo was absolutely deserving
He peaked at Syracuse.
Sure. And he contributed to winning 3 gold medals. You can literally exclude his entire NBA career and those still clear the bar for basketball hall of fame
The Melo hate on here is so toxic!
I don’t personally put a ton of stock into Gold medals for US players. We’ve won 17 out of 21 games. We’re expected to win.
Which brings me to Melo, he was on the 2004 Bronze team. If anything, getting Bronze once is far more damaging than wining 3 Golds. To me, at least.
I’m a Wizards fan and sometimes I feel this way about Wall, and it’s impossible to communicate it to fellow fans.
Not to the same degree as Melo since Wall’s career story was much shorter and he didn’t care about “scoring 30”…but the guy resisted playing off-ball very much.
But the similarity was that his career ended faster than anybody else’s. Half a season averaging his 2nd highest PPG on the Rockets after returning from injury, to playing a few dozen trial games for the Clippers, to out of the league for good. And he probably never learned that he needed to adjust before the NBA dropped him.
I don’t know if I can side with this about Wall. He played 6 full NBA seasons, and his highest usage rate was 30.6%. In that season his VORP was 4.8, with an 8.8 win share, a 23.2 PER, and a 46.9% assist rate. These are all excellent numbers and show that he wasn’t a black hole. By comparison, Carmelo’s highest usage rate is 35.1%, and his advanced metrics play out like this 3.9⁄9.5⁄24.8⁄14.1%. The 14.1% shows that in his highest usage and in a good season, he just wasn’t passing the ball. He wasn’t creating shots and opportunities for others like Wall was.
He retired 9th all time in scoring. NBA 75. You sound stupid
Dude was a league average efficiency shooter on high volume his entire career. He did not contribute to winning basketball and his playoff record (or lack thereof) is indicative of that. His jumper, however, was aesthetically pleasing.
The second best player on his team during the Knicks previously best year was JR Smith
Like I said, his entire career.
Cumulative stats are only one way to tell a player’s story. And if their only notable stat is points then you’re just proving my argument.
The fact that Melo Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter are on the same commentary crew when I think those are 3 of the most “ego ruined my chance at winning” dudes is why I hate that show. Vince was less bad than the other 2 I guess
How did T-Mac’s ego ruin his chance of winning?
I think jeff can gundy said it. Every great player is a 10,000 hours of work type of person. Tracy McGrady was like a 1,000 hours of work kind of guy
there is part of truth in that in the second half of his career, but before 2004 he’s hard working and improved every year.
His body wore out at 28 so maybe he did his best with what he had
How is he an awful commentator? You might not care what he has to say but if you can’t explain that you deserve your downvotes
Man who couldn’t force himself to play team basketball, is going to suddenly be able to evaluate it in others? Yeah idk about that.
Seriously. Melo doesn’t have charisma to be charming or add anything to analysis, and he seems to not quite understand the nuances of the game (or care about them enough) to add anything of value either.
It’s funny that NBC picked 3 guys that never won an NBA championship to lead their panel.
Amazon got that exploding rocket ship money.
Is this bros one phone call from prison lol
What happened to Chauncey Billups
Gambling meant too much to him.
to much too him* if we’re going to be consistent with the post title.
Stealing. Thieving and stealing meant too much to him. Millions of dollars in earnings wasn’t enough, he wanted more and was willing to steal to do it.
This clips old
Clearly. Pretty sure the NBA would nuked Chauncey into orbit if he was out on federal bond talking about anything nba related.
Dude was too busy getting federal charges instead of being a decent nba coach lol
portland casino legend
Chauncey right, Melo cared more about 30 points than the win
roidempire is right about chauncey being right. Melo just wanted to score 30 and didn’t care about winning.
Howard Johnson is right about Olson Johnson being right.
Gambling meant too much to billups.
I can’t wait for Jeremy Lin to get on Carmelo’s show. However, Lin requested a private conversation with Carmelo before the public one because everyone knows Carmelo did not love the Linsanity moments.
Pretty shitty to go 15 years without talking to Lin about it and then expect to ambush him on a Podcast surrounded by Melo allies.
That would be very ‘Melo: “You tarnishing my legacy that is otherwise flawless by being honest about how I treated you! Why are you being such a dick to a hero like me?”
It needs to be a lot more gaslighty, condescending, and coming from Melo w/ 4 of his buddies. Don’t forget a dash of DARVO.
What could melo possibly have a problem with regarding linsanity?? What an asshole. Like what would he ambush him with? What do you presume Lin would want to talk about first in private? Damn melo has always been a douche
i mean Lin wasn’t on the podcast, not really an ambush
Cuz Lin knew better than to accept the invite, and again extended an always been open invitation to talk in private at least about it first.
Of course, Melo’s team said no.
Wouldn’t shock me if he didn’t based on how Lin responded in wanting a private convo first. Melo just trying to do it for views and clicks he don’t give a fuck about Lin.
Nah, he’s doing it because he’s finally realizing he ain’t loved like that. Knicks fans are finally over him and he’s most def hearing it, one way or another. And when he tries to find out why, exhibit #1 that KEEPS coming back to him is Linsanity.
Gotta keep in mind the main reason he forced his way to New York is simply because it was a big market and he wanted to be what Brunson is now - the basketball king of NY. It hurt him when Jokic erased half his career’s legacy in Denver, now this is the second half he was really banking on.
Damn I didn’t even think about it that way. Franchise players for both teams he spent time on have extremely eclipsed his results, not even that but they also exposed how selfish he was in his work compared to other players willing to do more than score.
Carmelo single handedly killed Linsanity.
Go look at the stat lines. Carmelo comes back and instantly leads the team in Field Goals Attempted almost every game.
He turned Lin from this magical playmaker into a guy who passes him the ball so he could shoot. The Lin tore his meniscus and never returned to that level.
Melo joining the Pistons may not have resulted in the same level of championship success. The Darko pick was a blessing in disguise.
D. Wade or Chris Bosh on the Pistons wouldve been a threepeat dynasty
Chris Bosh would’ve been a perfect fit
Y’all are underestimating Sheed in this. No guarantee they trade for him if they draft any of those guys. He was a great defender and a big man who could shoot the 3 before that was ubiquitous
Sheed was the piece that made them actual contenders and their most talented player, the team worked perfectly for him though because he had no 1 option talent but that was not a good role for him team dynamic expectation wise
Prime Sheed was definitely better than rookie Bosh. That said, Bosh could have been learning from him and coming off the bench. That would have been a monstrous post trio, and they might have still been competing for chips after that Spurs loss.
Point is if they draft Bosh they likely don’t trade for Sheed
Depends. Darko was a big but he was glued to the bench thanks to Larry Brown’s preference for veterans. Probably would be the same even if someone like Bosh was drafted and playing great in practice
Hell, Kirk Hinrich would’ve gotten us a repeat in all likelihood. Probably Chris Kaman too
You don’t know that. Lots of teams are talented on paper. What we do know is that they picked Darko and won a championship.
Do you honestly believe D. Wade (‘06 FMVP), or Chris Bosh (carried the Raptors after TMac and VC left) would honestly make zero difference to the team, or are you just saying that to contradict me.
The argument is that numerous players and FO members said they made the trade for Rasheed because they could tell in year 1 that Darko wasn’t going to work.
Without the trade for Rasheed, the other 4 (or at least Ben) would have aged out before Carmelo/Bosh were able to actually plug in as a starting caliber 4 on a chip team.
And Larry Brown was terrible to rookies
Probably the greatest What If in Pistons fans head, What if not Darko?
i mean the Pistons might have been more willing to just trade him for a big return and keep the window going
Dont think they win if he plays over Tayshaun. But also think that he’d learn from vets that give a shit instead being told to carry the franchise.
I keep saying this. You get Melo you don’t get Tayshaun rise. No Tayshaun no defense no defense no championship
The only point chauncey made sense with is he said if melo had gone to the pistons they could have trained him right
All of the Pistons players agree Melo wouldn’t have been a great pick for them.
2much2melo
He ain’t wrong
As a Melo fan you just can’t deny the flaws.
Real ones know Melo has been and will always be overrated. Winning was like the third most important thing to him after scoring and getting paid.
No wonder Lin hasn’t wanted to speak to him. Melo is a selfish dude, nothing is gonna change that
The over/under meant to much to Chauncey
This is my worry about AJ Dybantsa tbh
his rep was never strong but this interview did serious damage
This is a fucking nuclear bomb at his heart lol. To say this about another player is DEVASTATING. This is the type of shit you reserve for the most belligerent, harmful assholes.
It would’ve been better for Carmelo if Chauncey had said “Melo didn’t care, he was always late to practice, slept during meetings, and he reeked of booze”. Then he could at least take the angle of being a nonchalant goof who preferred to enjoy life like Arenas.
Too*
It was pretty known back then that he would rather score 30+ and lose than score less than 20 and win
The same can be said for Harden
Harden stopped trying to average 30 a long time ago when he left Houston. He’s had a full second career since.
Does he care to do the things necessary to win a ring? Definitely not. But you can’t pin Harden with the accusation that he cares more about something as shallow as stats more than winning.
Money, sure, but most players are like that and will prioritize $ over wins
Maybe not on points anymore, but the amount of time that guy spends dribbling the ball is maddening. The more he dribbles, the more the team stalls out, and everything suffers on both ends.
Melo a bum mentality
Hubris
Never understood why Melo got all the positive attention he did. One of the most selfish players I can ever remember seeing play in person. Just a corrosive guy to have on your team. And now he’s offering us his years of accumulated wisdom for the Finals. Ok.
When was this interview?
He’s a wide receiver? Sounds like AJ Brown to me
obtaining consent and not rigging games for the mob meant too much for chanceu billups
Carmelo was this during his Knicks tenure as well but certain Knicks fans and Carmelo stans attempt to gaslight and deny reality.
I used to dog on melo so much saying he was trash and this sub always hated on people saying melo wasn’t that guy
Don’t care. Still like Melo. He was fun to watch.
One thing that shocks me when you look at the stats for Melo is how low his assists were for the usage he got. I’d understand if he was playing like Reggie Miller/RIP/Klay and was getting the ball in motion to get to his shots with a dribble or 2 and was only a finisher but there are players who don’t have the skill he did averaging way more assists because they understand that they can leverage their scoring into making teammates better and you wonder how much better he could make teams if he was just more willing to swing the ball. Like DeRozan is an example, not as talented or physical as Melo and had a worse first step but developed into a point wing which has also extended his longevity a ton.
Chauncey should have placed a bet that Melo will score 30.
Point shaving meant too much to Billups.
Melo with the Cristiano Ronaldo attitude
Y’all have a disease
Why are they so hatefully obsessed with this man?
The people on this site don’t actually understand basketball, and they don’t bother to read or listen to sentences either. They take one portion of the interview and ignore the context to make it much more negative than Billups intended it to be. They do stuff like this with any person who they despise, such as Carmelo.
[deleted]
Love it,no complaints from me
says someone who was busted for gambling
Man who does something wrong says something correct about another. stop the presses
For illegal poker games, not anything basketball related. Billups was a certified champion and winner.
But that’s the thing. As the owner or decision maker of the team, do I really want someone like him advising me on my sports multi-billion dollar related stuff? The character unfortunately has been negatively affected too
What a ridiculous made up scenario.
How is that relevant to the point he is making at all?
BTW in terms of the Billups white washing that goes on amongst a lot of people, NBA players especially I think it’s important to spell out what he actually did.
He was part of a scam where players were lured to private poker games and had their money stolen from them. He is literally a low life scum thief and I hope he gets serious prison time.
He was busted for gambling so his analysis of his ex teammate is obviously wrong. Right?
You can say it kills his credibility. You cant deny it
Melo could come out and say Billiups threw sme games and people will believe melo
That’s so wildly irrelevant to the topic of Melo though but go off I guess.
And I double down on my answer. F Billuips you gambler!!!!!!!!!!
I mean yeah fuck him for gambling, but is he wrong here? He can have a correct opinion and still be an asshole.
I didnt stutter
