I just hit up the baseball sub for the first time today and i dont know what the shit is going on but everyone seems to be freaking out about tags

To say he didn’t attempt it is just wrong. But to say he didn’t attempt it “enough” is at least debatable.

No, the baseline always exists. It is the straight line between bases. The basepath is the line established when a tag is attempted. The 3 feet to either side rule applies to the basepath not baseline. There are no rules for running out of the baseline between 1st and 2nd. 

I guess my issue with the rule(apparently) is that if Gunnar follows him out there after Clement starts drifting it basically guarantees no double play. He’s running towards Clement with the intention to tag him and then Clement just veers.

Why isn’t every baserunner getting as wide as possible in that situation before the fielder attempts the tag?

If that’s the correct call then it’s just a really dumb rule.

You see him reach his glove out towards the player. What is he supposed to do? Go-go-gadget extendo arms towards him? It was a blown call. That’s that

There’s no reason to do that when they can pause and try to induce a rundown or force the fielder to throw to 1st or 2nd. That’s why you always throw to the bag if you can. If you don’t have enough time to turn 2 by throwing to the bag (or you can’t throw to 2nd in time), then you don’t get a double play unless the runner from 1st plays the situation poorly.

Yes and no. If they run too far into the outfield, you just get the force out at first, and then throw back to 2nd and get a rundown.

But generally speaking, whenever a ss or 2b has to go to tag the runner, any competant runner will basically make sure they dont get the double play.

I mean, Gunnar is clearly on the infield side of 1st and 2nd no? You’re never tagging the runner out from there no matter what.

I feel like like at that point you’re violating the “spirit of the game”, cause under that confine then no one is out of the baseline unless you literally graze the runner with the glove and at that point it’s not even an “attempt” anymore

You’re are not given the right to get a double play. If by making a clear reach for the runner prevents the double play then it is what it is. He could have thrown to second to get Clement out but wouldn’t have gotten the double.

He was never even inside the baseline let alone deep inside it.

If Clement freezes and forces Gunnar to tag him, no one gives a damn, but to create that much separation is, something

Technically Clement could have ran wherever he wanted though… just because it’s the most you’ve ever seen a player deviate from the baseline is irrelevant. What matters is the path he took once the tag attempt (if you can call it that) was made. He’s safe.

He did extend it. Going any further to chase Clement would have prevented him from making the throw to first on time. Is it your understanding that a runner can turn well outside his established base path with the aim of making the fielder chase him well outside the base path to prevent them from making an otherwise routine play?

He still has to attempt to tag the runner though.
