How passionate are Angels fans? To have a nearly top 10 attendance fanbase despite all their woes is nothing short of incredible dedication
Long Beach but going up towards LA there’s a huge billboard that posts Angel games deals. Like the 4 for $44, 4 tickets, 4 drinks, 4 hot dogs.
That’s just the price of parking at Dodger Stadium.
I love this.gif. I upvote it every time I see it because I do this exact same thing all the damn time.
There’s just some absolute perfect gifs out there.
Like Oprah and the bees.
I’m not sure who down voted you, it wasn’t me. This is hilarious.
Same
OMG. Price of parking at a Dodger game is $45.
Yeah it’s absurd. Dodgers games are a novelty outing for everybody who’s not absolutely loaded
I feel like thats bad. Like thats a bad thing. They shouldnt be allowed to do that.
Last time I checked it was \(35 in the main lot at the Trop. There are lots at the Lightning stadium where it’s \)40. I haven’t been to a Bucs game in years but I’m sure it’s comparable.
I think its like $65 in the stadium parking garage across the street from T-Mobile.
At least in Seattle there’s alternate options for getting to the stadium, which isn’t surrounded by a sea of parking lots.
“He” shouldn’t be allowed to do that
SeaWorld/Disney/Busch Gardens/Universal parking is ALSO 45 dollars. It’s a MASSIVE scam at those parks. My wife and I are passholders at SeaWorld so we don’t have to pay it but I’ve been watching it steadily climb for the past 3 years. 45 dollars to park in a HUGE parking lot for a place you already have tickets to is extortion.
And you can pay for premium parking which isn’t always closer than regular parking
Oh I know. “VIP parking” is probably less than 30 yards closer to the entrance to SeaWorld for SIXTY SEVEN dollars. It’s mad house style stuff.
Man I love living in a walkable city with public transportation.
I’m in Orlando and have a Disney annual pass which includes parking in the cost. I keep track of my visits on a spreadsheet (yeah, I’m THAT kind of guy) so I can tell when the money saved on parking has paid for my pass for the year. It makes the cost of the pass feel much better when I still have 6 months left and every visit is “free”.
Imagine playoffs? Its going to be like 55 or 60……. Fuck that
If I’m not mistaken, I think we paid $80 for the game against cincy in last year’s playoff. Pretty offensive.
How much do they charge you to let you leave?
that was how I knew my commute was almost over during college
The owner said it best when asked about why he doesn’t spend money for top players, “Angel fans don’t really care about winning, they want affordability” (I’m paraphrasing)
They do 3,2,1 at Cincinnati, \(3 dollar beer, \)2 hotdogs $1 ice cream. (Only Tuesday but still). And you are allowed to bring a cooler with food and drinks
That’s the deal my single A stadium puts out when attendance dips
I think not enough people know that they run free shuttles from union station that take you up sunset and drop you off behind center field. They have their own lane and everything.
As long as you can get downtown, you can get on the shuttle and it’s easy.
Yeah I’ve talked to people about going to an Angels game just to go see baseball if they don’t care who plays. Much cheaper than going to see the Dodgers.
lol my husband and I are Giants fans from Long Beach and every so often we go to Angel stadium just to see a game and get a bucket of Cathy’s cookies.
It doesn’t hurt that tickets are like $10
I had to explain to my wife it’s cheaper to buy an Angels ticket than it is to buy a box of Driscoll Strawberries at Whole Foods
And if I may add, we’d rather have the strawberries
Tbf the best thing about CA is in June you can get a box of the juiciest strawberries you’ve ever had for \(3. A 350 sq ft studio may cost you \)2500. But our strawberry game is 👌
The Oxnard strawberry festival is legit. People would pay the entrance fee just to go in and buy large boxes of strawberries then head home. That’s how good they were. Straight from the field, vine ripened, the sweetest strawberries I’ve ever had. Driving through at night you’d smell strawberries if you rolled your window down. Of course other times of the year you’d get to smell the onions…but when it was strawberry season…
That sounds AMAZING
Live in Oxnard. Can confirm everything he’s saying. It’s really a great festival in general
Right? I’m hoping to catch Vidalia night myself; last time, all I got was red onion for a week. Still nice, but this year I’m really hoping. Then a quick ride to Gilroy to really complete the day.
Get the garlic ice cream in Gilroy 🫡
Our fruit and produce game in general is top tier.
Half the vegetables and three quarters of the US’ fruits and nuts are grown here, and it shows.
I love our farmers markets in LA man it really is an underrated thing about living here
Oxnard is also the literal strawberry capital of the world
True, smells so good on the way to Santa Barbara
Phil you know the produce makes you emotional
To eat strawberries like a woman? It’s a fuckin’ disgrace
10 years i wanted strawberries, i compromised I ate fruit pies warmed on da radiator
For $2500 you can get 833 boxes of strawberries, at that amount I’d just build a house out of the strawberries
Something something anything but the metric system
There’s no laws saying I can’t eat your house.
The Big Bad Wolf needs fruits and vegetables too
There are only so many chances left to watch Trout.
There was a time you could get Disneyland tickets bundled with Angels tickets for the price of one
1997 was a good time.
Yeah last time I went I got front row on the 1st base side for like $30 (maybe 50 feet or so past the infield dirt)
There was a bit of kernel of truth to Arte Moreno claiming that affordability is a pretty high concern for fans.
Also the stadium is a bit dusty but not falling apart. It’s a good time for a baseball game, nothing super special, but the stadium has charm.
I hope it gets fixed and never replaced
Even when they were good in the way back when, tickets were so much more affordable. Not to mention the train stops right at the stadium. I used to ride Amtrak from SD to Camarillo when I lived in Fallbrook, and almost every Friday when I would go back to my parent’s house, during the season, there were people riding up for an Angels game.
One trip, there were so many different issues with the train and the passing trains, that we were delayed nearly 3 hours. There were tons of Angels fans going up to the game, and we ended up emptying the trains entire beer stock, everybody was hammered. By the time we got to Anaheim the game had ended. The fans were upset, but admittedly had a great time on that train trip.
I’ve gone to the one Dodgers game I can afford this year and am very much entertaining the idea of taking the kid to the Angels a couple times
I’ll take that instead of overpaying for Dodgers tickets. Nosebleeds on a random Tuesday in July against the Rockies should not be \(85 lmao. Not to mention \)45 for parking.
and in socal and close to disney.
But also LA has a lot of people. Like of course Cleveland is gonna be low.
Because watching a baseball game in OC’s perfect weather for dirt cheap is a treat no matter how shit the team is
As an example to show how perfect the weather is: The angels haven’t had a home game rained out since before COVID
I think this is probably a universal truth. In person baseball rules and if the weather is nice (read: Southern California all the time) it can’t be beat. On the rare occasion that the weather cooperates here in the summer (see username) I go to Ft. Myers Mighty Mussels (Single A, Twins) games for 8 dollars, it’s never not awesome, and the team just usually isn’t very good but it just doesn’t matter. Baseball kicks ass.
Being in Orlando I miss there being a solid minor league option around anymore. A good baseball game is a good game period. And getting into one pretty cheaply has always made good sense.
Another big factor, Southern California is transplant central. Over 50% of socal’s population is from out of state. So, visiting teams visit, they have a decent population of fans who are gonna come out to see them.
Any time I went to see the Sox play a large portion of the people in the stands were Sox fans. If you sit down low on the 1st base side it’s like 90% Sox fans and at least one Angels fan who gets super upset with us and rage quits the game lol
The last one was against the Twins, right? I vaguely remember it wasn’t even raining at game time, the field just didn’t dry in time after it had rained because Angel Stadium (justifiably) doesn’t have advanced drainage systems
Yep, at the end of the day you can pay five bucks and just go sit in the 100 section somewhere and watch Trout hit dongs.
It’s a shame the view behind the outfield is of a freeway overpass.
It’s a big stadium (6th) in a big market (2nd, obv). Fuck Arte Moreno, but the Angels have never been a poverty franchise in terms of attendance/viewership/payroll.
They pay people. Maybe not the right people, but they pay people.
Sounds familiar
Its way less about paying the right people and more about not having a farm system and proper facilities.
Dodgers can take a 12th round pick and have the system in place to turn them into a proper prospect.
Used to. The Rendon contract was the last purse Arte has given out, after next year, the only player making more than 10m is Trout. Everyone is currently below that- though several of those players are ARB players.
It feeeels like he’s trying to clean the payroll for a sale… but that could just be wishful thinking.
The Angels are paying Trout and Rendon $671M.
Going to the Angels stadium is fun. Golden road before the game, walk across to the stadium, short lines at security, good priced tickets….and I’m a cardinals fan living out here.
Why would anyone go to Golden Road when Noble is only a few minutes further walk?
Giants fan and a beer snob yikes
Noble is overrated.
Hard agree
Yeah those guys went way downhill after the pandemic. I’m not a fan of the whole Golden Road/Inbev thing, but that spot is at least more enjoyable than what Noble turned into.
Went downhill once Evan left and opened Green Cheek…. 10 years ago!
Don’t forget Karl Strauss
But definitely forget Brewery X
Food and vibes are way better at Golden Road
I’m going with my mom to a game for her birthday next month and it’s like 50 bucks to sit behind the Cardinals dugout.
Californians love their baseball. LA, Angels, SF and SD always draw well regardless of record.
Oakland filled the Coliseum for playoff games. It was the only time we felt hopeful.
Southern California is just baseball Mecca. It is one of the most popular sports here, played year around by kids, going to a ball game is fun regardless if your team is playing. It is probably why so many professional players come from this region.
CA and FL are genuine pro baseball farms, it’s insane how much talent they produce compared to everyone else
Missing Oakland/Sacramento
They’re basically the Las Vegas A’s playing in a minor league stadium at this point.
The Ironic part is Sacramento tried for years to get a baseball team. MLB barely recognizes they are in Sacramento. When I look at schedules for opposing teams, the A’s are listed as ATH but all other teams are listed by city. When they finally came out with an alternate jersey to sell to fans( yellow with Sacramento written across the front) the jerseys sold out almost instantly. Last year at the game people were huddled around the fitted caps, the only thing they had that said Sacramento.
The park is literally a minor league park (Rivercats). All seats as lower level except for a smattering of suites. I’ve been to a few games. They are pretty full. No glaring empty sections. Attendance is limited by the size of the park. I’d like to see this list by percentage of attendance/capacity, just to note differences.
Edit based on these numbers. Sacramento is averaging only 270 empty seats per game.
I would also imagine the Angels are a draw for both people on a Disney vacation who want something else to do, or transplants who want to watch their original favorite team when they show up.
You would think that’s the case. But if you knew the demographics of the region, you’d know those aren’t really factors.
Los Angeles metro population is nearly 20M people, with 10M within an hour drive from Anaheim. Many are anti-LA. Both culturally and politically. Add the fact that you’ve got a few generations who grew up Angel fans and that game costs have always been a fraction of what the Dodgers charge, it’s a perfect location to grow a strong local fanbase.
Curious on tourist vs actual fan numbers.
The only time I went to the Bay Area, I saw both teams vs both NYC teams. Labor Day weekend 2018. I am a Reds fan. Good times.
SF didn’t draw until they moved out of Candlestick.
San Francisco’s attendance despite the on-field product so far is a testament to how beautiful that stadium is
Baltimore should be in the same realm, it shocked me how empty it was when I went. If I lived there I’d be going to every game I could
Everybody is very pessimistic about the team and it doesn’t help matters that they’ve been screwing over season ticket holders jacking up prices and eliminating 13 and 29 game plans for 20 and 40 game plans.
Lots of money and season tickets being paid for by some of the richest corporations in the world. Easy to give out tickets and make sure people show up with a beautiful ballpark like that.
Great food in that ballpark too ngl
It has gone downhill since Aramark took over as the main concessionaire. There are still some great independent vendors (Lumpia Company, Ghirardelli, Tony’s) and the crab sandwich still delivers but it’s over $32 after tax now
Used to be. It’s awful now
The cha cha bowl, in my opinion, is the only food item worth it there. Under 30$, and you got the great sauce selection for it. But everything has gone down hill, or gotten so much more expsinve. I almost always bring food now. But these day I get a good cheap bon mi, or I make stuff for hot dogs and assemble them on my seat. I refuse to give management more money till they get a decent closer and at least two good pitchers.
Angels games are entirely too easy to attend is the problem. Exit the 91, 5 or 57, turn twice and you’re damn near on the field. Disgusting. If you’re not stuck in ass-to-ass for 45 minutes to travel 7 miles can you truly call yourself a baseball fan?
If you’re not staying in your seat 10-20 mins after a game to let the crowds thin out. Slowly meander your way back to your car over another 10 mins and wait another 10 to get out of the parking lot you hate baseball.
you and i could baseball together, meander buddy.
Last time I went to Dodger Stadium was for a My Chemical Romance concert. Took took hour after the last song for my wife’s brother to make his way and pick us up in the rideshare area.
Previously, 2.5hrs for each an Elton John and a Paul McCartney concert to drive myself out.
I went to a Giants Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium last year. The Uber ride from Studio City took an hour & 45 minutes. The last hour of that was spent in the offramp to the stadium.
This. I live in the IE. My ex loves to go to the Dodgers. They spend 2 hrs plus getting to the game, then another 2 hrs getting home when you factor in getting out of the parking lot. Not to mention $300 for the cost of tickets and parking. I can literally get Angels tickets mid week for free and be there in 35 minutes.
I live in the outskirts of east LA and there are times where it literally takes longer to get to and leave a Dodger game than it would to go to an Angel game if you are just talking about time it takes from the house to your seat and back
I had an argument with someone comparing the Angels’ attendance to ours and I’m like the Angels check off every logistical advantage of going to a game.
Mutliple highways, access and transportation.
Location is basically just a bit northern central of Orange County.
Cheap tickets, the Angels tickets are cheaper than ours.
Decent stadium with open-air.
Historical organization with a WS.
Population.
People clowned on Arte for saying that affordability was the most important thing to fans, but it’s true. That entire organization needs to take a 6-week media training course.
More like 45 minutes to go 2-3 miles. The 101 and 110 are the worst freeways in the world.
I’ve watched the final out at the stadium and walked through my front door 20 minutes later. The Big A is convenient as fuck.
I think that we have a lot of die hard fans but most of the people I see attend are just locals for a day or a night out. It helps that Orange County has about 3 million people, so it is a large market. Also, since the Angels have been struggling (due to many factors but mostly Arte Moreno) the ticket prices have been really affordable. We also get the tourist fans that are in town for Disneyland. The stadium has a great location and is easy to get in and out of.
All this to say, I don’t think our ticket sales are due to the die hard fans. In fact, a lot of the die hards aren’t purchasing tickets as a way to protest.
TLDR; a lot of casual fans don’t care if the Angels aren’t performing. They’re fun to watch and locals just want an affordable, fun time out.
Also, it’s one of the top 10 things to do in Anaheim so if you’re visiting with a young family and can’t handle any more of the Mouse, it’s a good option.
I’m a Dodgers fan, but I’ve been going to Angels games for 15 years since it’s more affordable and because of the great giveaways. When I used to have a Disneyland annual pass, I’d go to the park midday, stop by Porto’s, and end the day watching the game with potato balls and get a free Angels beach towel. It’s a beautiful park, and it’s very family friendly and safe.
this is ALL for cathy’s cookies
Great minds, my friend.
People ruthlessly mocked Moreno for saying that fans care more about affordability than they do about winning, but he’s not wrong.
The Rockies and angels consistently pull high attendance despite throwing trash on the field every year because tickets are cheap and the atmosphere is good. The vast majority of people at a game are just looking for a chill night out and arent keeping track of every player’s savant page
He’s not wrong that fans care about affordability, but he is wrong in that he’s presenting a false dichotomy here. An affordable experience and being competitive are not mutually exclusive, especially because payroll is not the problem. They’ve been top 10 in payroll most of his tenure. And we see teams like the Guards and Rays do way more with a fraction of the cost.
The problem is everything else, all the off field infrastructure Arte refuses to invest in. Being below average in scouting and player development and analytics is why they suck year after year. Arte could cut payroll and spend some of that money on all this stuff and I bet the team would more competitive without hurting the team’s overall expenditures.
The Rockies has one of the most beautiful view. The owner is a shitstain but the stadium is damn beautiful
And don’t discount the good weather.
I live in Orange County, way cheaper and quicker to go to an Angels game than a Dodgers game.
Sat 3rd row behind home plate last week for $90 a ticket.
Are you aware of how many people live in southern california
Damn near the whole Al central bottom 10 in attendance lmao
The early months of the season are cold and rainy. People don’t go nearly as much then. Come to a Tigers or Guardians game in the summer, especially on a weekend, and the attendance is through the roof
Who the hell wants to go to Twins game on April? Its around 40F or around 5c, its freaking cold
It’s true. We went to opening day this season, and we froze our butts off. It’s been tough sitting down with no butt.
From June to August it’s almost a guarantee if you work with 100 people that three will be going to a day game on a weekday.
They have generations of fans who are die hards.
Or casuals who goes there for cheap game. Angels games are really cheap to go
Loyal to the game! Red October will come in 2037
Hopefully it won’t be that long. Arte is already 80.
This just in, Arte Moreno has found fountain of youth reduced his age to 33 years old
Unsubscribe
Angels stadium is awesome. Easy to get in and out of. Food is cheap compared to Dodger Stadium. Best player of our generation plays there. Would recommend
Support your team ffs Tampa
But there’s a bridge or something
I went to my first Giants game in SF a few years ago and it took an hour just to cross the Bay Bridge.
When I went to a Rays game, it took about 20 minutes to get there from downtown Tampa.
One of those destinations was one of the best ballparks in the game. The other was a dump whose only saving grace was that it had AC in the middle of August in Florida.
If the stadium is nice enough, it justifies the commute.
I lived in Oakland for years and I used to love going to the Coliseum when it was still a thing. But yeah the Trop really doesn’t much compare to Oracle lol
It’s a shit stadium in a shit location. I’d rather fly to NY to watch them play at the Yankees than drive 2 hours to St Pete.
Love the Angels but a lot of people come to support the away team
I worked at Angels stadium for three seasons and their fans are great. It’s just insane that Artie Moreno isn’t interested in putting a good product on the field. The OC market is huge and the fans are loyal and the Angels should be one of the best teams in the AL. That market is a gold mine and Moreno is leaving millions on the table by not putting a better product on the field.
Did you know that most of the ticket sales at Angel Stadium are actually opposing fans lol
It’s “most” when Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, and Yankees are in town otherwise it’s about 30-40% fans of the other team.
Who doesn’t want to catch a few games while they vacation at the beach?
Anaheim has great weather, is in metropolitan area of 13 million people, and receives more than 25 million visitors a year to Disneyland or conferences. You can get a package of 4 seats, 4 hot dogs, and 4 drinks for less than the price of parking at Dodgers stadium.
There are usually as many fans of visiting teams at the stadium — even far away teams like the Boston Red Sox — as Angels fans. And the Angels fans who are there don’t exhibit much passion.
I wouldn’t take those attendance numbers to be indicative of a passionate fan base.
It is not only angels fans, when they play the Yankees, dodgers, you would think angels are visiting team, theres always a healthy crowd of visiting teams, but yeah tickets are super cheap if you like baseball and wants to watch a “professional ” baseball team
3 million people in Orange County. Prices are affordable, one of the few cheap things you can take your family too in a very expensive city.
We like baseball.
Why does Florida even have teams?
Didn’t Arte say this year that winning isn’t a top priority for fans?
There’s not a whole lot to do in Anaheim besides Angels games and Disneyland and have you SEEN Disneyland prices?
I was just thinking that. When I was there in February, I was shocked at how little there was to see in Anaheim besides Disneyland and the stadiums.
Padres being #2 especially this year when their offense has been ass is really impressive too
Attendance tends to lag a year behind results, as odd as that may sound
Petco is such a nice stadium in a great town. Love spending a few days there.
The Giants being 6th while also being 5 years removed from their last playoff appearance is insane too
Angels games are vibes. Baseball games in general. Can’t think of summers without them
Giants fans: Ahem
My in laws - who aren’t angels fans - regularly go because the seats are cheap and it’s a good activity for them and my niece.
Anaheim has beautiful weather and the stadium is nice. Plus it’s right down the street from Disney, perfect tourist trap for an off Day
When I visit LA. We always go see an angels game. Don’t care who they are playing. Not an angels fan either. Just cheap tickets and good seats
California baseball lives on. San Fran is similar dogshit ran team but puts fans in the seats
It helps that the Giants are now the only team in town (and pretty soon, in the entire northern half of the state).
It’s also a great place for road fanbases to go and make some noise. When the Yankees are there it sounds like a home game for the Yanks. That helps boost the attendance with so many transplants in SoCal
Big market, tickets are very cheap, pretty cool ballpark, good factors for a good fan experience.
IIRC they also not don’t have many poorly scheduled games (like early Thursday games) because they play with fire on getaway days and do them at the latest possible time?
I wish. Dodger games are expensive. I can probably go to about 10 Angels games for the price I paid for one dodger game. :(
Agreed! Living in the IE makes it super easy getting to Angel games, but much harder and more expensive going to Dodger games. Just watching baseball in a major league stadium is a vibe and I want my kids to experience it. So angels it is, even if we’re dodger fans.
Let’s go Mets!
I’ve never been an angels fan (but I did live in orange county during mike trout’s rookie year). Going to games was always so fun. It was a cheap night out and you get to see Mike trout. I imagine it’s not that much different now.
They’re just going for Cathy’s Cookies
How ‘bout them Giants?
Huge dodger fan but I also love baseball. So I’ll go to catch a cheap ball game on any given night. That’s how i got to see Reid Detmers throw a no hitter AND Anthony Rendon hit a home run left handed in the same game. Lol
It’s really cheap to go to an Angels game. It’s so cheap, a college student can afford it
They have the lowest average ticket price in MLB
Not saying thats a bad thing, it always annoyed me during the dark days (Mariners fan) that we still had super high prices.
Angels fans have had some tough times the last 10 years at least the prices are low. Concession prices are also comparatively low, they used to have super cheap beer too
Everyone shitting on Moreno, as if he isn’t partially responsible for them setting ticket prices so low.
A lot of people move to LA from somewhere else. They still want to see their teams play.
Probably also helps there’s a metric fuckton of people that live in that area
As cheap as their tickets are I think they attract a lot of visiting fans. Southern California is home to so many transplants. This makes it easy for them to visit the stadium and catch a ball game.
It’s actually good value for families and usually great weather
you don’t understand the fan base…it’s not because of loyalty. it’s because the vast majority see going to a game as entertainment and don’t really care if they win or lose. this is exactly why Arte gets away with everything….people still go no matter what
Wow, props to the Mets for somehow filling up their stadium despite the record. Mets fans are….passionate? Or crazy?
The stats for attendance includes all paid tickets. So if you bought a ticket but stay home they still count you in the attendance.
I live in the LA area and am a Dodger fan..I go to a handful of Angel games annually. The tickets are way more affordable than Dodger Stadium. Also, a lot of people go to see the opposing team. Finally there are just a lot of people in Southern California to draw from.
Look at the Mariners with 1 playoff win in 2 decades lol
I have a feeling that fans of the west coast teams are getting tickets to see their teams at LAA since it’s easier than getting home tickets?
The good people of Of Anaheim love their team.
Such a sad organization. Just tragic. Sell the team Arte
Now do each cities population.
I think it speaks more to the attendance at other stadiums rather than the strength of the Angels fanbase. I drive by Angels stadium every day; it is modestly filled at best. The population in the area, affordable cost of tickets, and good early season weather is enough to get a decently consistent showing and edge out the others.
They’ve played the Cubs, Yankees, Reds, Dodgers and Padres - all bringing in large crowds…could it be more about that than the Angels fans showing up?
They get a significant boost of tourists in town for Disney. It’s the other thing to do nearby. A lot more out of towners than most stadiums.
Surprised I didn’t see this mentioned already, I think it’s the main reason for their consistent attendance. Tourists don’t care if the team is good.
A good chunk of them are people chanting “Sell the team”
LOL. They show up in the 3rd inning and leave in the 7th.
Giants fans would like some recognition here.
They also have la weather going for them.
I went to a weekday game two years ago for $1. Had to buy 4 tickets, could only find two friends to go with me. Tickets + parking together was less than the price for dinner for one. We were in the 300s, but we love the view up high.
I go to the Big A any time a good team is in town. Lots of baseball fans here; not a lot of Angel fans left.
We go to see the other teams 😁
