[Curt Hogg] Jacob Misiorowski has a 0.20 ERA (1 ER, 45.1 IP) over his last seven starts. That’s the lowest ERA by any starter in MLB over any seven-game span (min. 15 IP) since the mound was lowered in 1969.
This is cool but the stat kind of loses some value when Sanchez just had a 50+ scoreless inning streak, lol
Well it’s his fault for pitching so many innings on only 6 games. He should be better next time.
Sanchez’s streak didn’t start and end cleanly with the first inning and his final inning…
Skill issue
The NL has some incredible top tier pitching this year, just happy to enjoy it all
I was talking to my buddy about this today.
There is a pitcher this year who has 61 innings, 0.74 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, and 11.4 k/9. Yet if the Cy Young was awarded today he’d be third according to the ladder and betting odds.
That is ABSURD. What Mis, Sanchez, and Shohei are doing this year is remarkable.
And the guy with those stats is one of baseball’s best hitters. Just so insane to get to see all of this talent in the sport right now.
Ohtanis been in the league for a long time but everytime I think about him my mind breaks.
This should not be possible.
He’s much watch TV. I wish I could have seen him in pinstripes, but I’m just glad I get to see him at all.
Not to mention Burns and Sale Skenes and Harrison
This is the crazy part, you could remove Mis, Shohei and Sanchez from the running entirely and the narrative would still be “what a strong year for the NL Cy Young this has been”
Serious question: How is Skenes in this conversation, aside from being Skenes?
I’m sure he’ll be dominant the rest of the way and might end up in the race, but right now he’s not remotely close to these other guys.
Fourth place in FIP in the NL min 60 IP. ERA has been worse which seems to be a sequencing thing mostly (read as bad luck).
Right now Misiorowski and Sanchez are in a tier of their own CYA wise. But per inning, Skenes and Ohtani have both been nearly as good.
Simple as removing your qualifier. Is your hate that irrational?
Harrison has 57.1 IP, 1.57 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 11.5 k/9.
He’s just barely in the top 10 for NL Cy Young odds. absolutely loaded competition this year.
Yet if the Cy Young was awarded today he’d be third according to the ladder and betting odds.
Bum year for Shohei to try and focus on that Cy Young, huh?
On the other hand, if he wins, it’ll be truly legendary. No one can say that it was because of a weak field
I think he is only 3rd in the betting odds because 1 ‘bad’ start would change his numbers a lot more. But if all 3 basically ‘keep’ their stats the same for the rest of the season. I would say Ohtani would be the slight favorite to win because his ‘narrative’ factor is much higher, the number of innings be damned.
I don’t think any of the 3 will ‘maintain’ their current stats because all 3 are just statically absurd right now so it is going to depend on who worsens less. A couple of bad starts also brings others into the race.
The word “narrative” is one of the worst things to ever happen to American sports
You are getting downvoted but I absolutly agree Shohei will get the Cy young in the currents stats go on.
It’s hard because he doesnt have the volume, and the dodgers will never let him get the volume even if he has the chance so he’s sort of working from a disadvantage. The question becomes how much better your stats have to be to offset accumulating 40-50 fewer innings?
And this pitcher will only start 26 games at his current pace due to the six-man rotation versus his competitors who will log 6-7 more starts
If he keeps up his current historically low ERA like he has right now for the whole season it will be very interesting. As far as I know, no one has had that low of an ERA on that volume for a season. If he ends up with an ERA twice as good as his competition those extra starts matter a lot less and it becomes a real conversation where he has a real shot to win.
The greatest ability is availability and because the Dodgers are bubble wrapping him and their entire staff since for whatever reason their SP seem to suffer an inordinate amount of injuries, he is given extra rest versus his competition for Cy Young and is having less of a pitching impact by not starting for those 6-7 games
You could make the case that he alone is responsible for them being able to run a 6-man starting rotation, in which case he’s generating incredible value on off days by allowing his fellow pitchers to remain healthier.
But you don’t even need to go there to make the case for him in a scenario where he finishes with an ERA under 0.80. The case is “30% fewer innings is not nearly as bad giving up twice as many runs.”
You could also make the case the Dodgers payroll allows them to go a 6-man rotation to pay the 6-8 SPs they have on their roster with playoff only Glasnow and Snell
If that were true and not just you coping because you dislike the Dodgers, then we’d see the other high payroll teams doing it. But we don’t, because they don’t have Ohtani.
Yes! All of us, equally. No need to double check as we are all doing fantastic
Yup. Looked up Hershiser’s and it was 5 CGSOs and 10 innings of a 16-inning game. Though if you count the postseason, Hershiser technically tops this since he also had 8IP in the NLCS after his 59 ended the regular season.
Hershiser actually doesn’t top this because he gave up 2 runs on the 9th of that game
Oh duh.
I was wondering about that too
Right, I had to think for a sec about why Sanchez didn’t just do this
It’s gonna be a tight cy young race between these two
“how come no one hits .300 anymore?”
We’ve created demon pitchers with modern science and statistics
Incidentally, one of Misiorowski’s main competitors for the NL CYA is currently hitting .300 on the season.
Like he said, demon pitchers
I don’t know where you heard that about Ben Brown but it isn’t true
The starting pitcher with the lowest ERA is hitting .300 currently.
Superheros and demigods don’t count
But what if they made him pitch to himself? It’s only fair
goats don’t count
NL CY Young race is absurd this year lol
Sanchez needs a no-no
All very well until Ohtani gets a no hitter and hits multiple homers in the same game.
They won’t let Ohtani pitch 9 innings
They will if his pitch count is low
I’d like to think he has zero shot, but my only argument is he strikes too many people out and runs up pitch counts, but that’s a dumb argument.
I mean, you’re not wrong. The man really struggles to stop getting into deep counts. He could probably manage it but it’s not the most likely thing.
It’s surprising he hasn’t done that already
He has a soft pitch count. He was pulled earlier this year with 6 innings of no hit ball and he didnt fuss over it. [Pen ended up giving up a run]
Cristopher Sanchez has a chance to join him in 2 days to be a part of this stat.
Sanchez has 46 IP over his last 6 starts and only 1ER, so unless you think pitching more innings over less starts is a bad thing, he already joined him
It’s a stat about 7 starts though, not innings pitched. Sanchez has to have another scoreless outing to join this specific slightly cherry picked stat. Sanchez has still been more impressive in my mind too, just talking about this specific thing.
I mean if Sanchez had let up literally one run, or even if he’d been up 1 to 2 it would’ve been pitcher of the month for Miz in a landslide. I know, I know, bikes and grandmas, but if Sanchez even has a minor era rise it’s Miz’s Cy because he leads him in essentially every single other pitching statistic.
If he had one run he still had a better month than Miz.
Sanchez faced a worse lineup of teams in May than Miz did
Don’t care, he still wins on better stats. The only thing Miz had was k rate
That’s not the only thing lmao, he lead Sanchez in BAA, OPS against, WHIP, and FIP. Essentially every single major pitching statistic other than era.
And he currently has a better ERA than Sanchez in June so far, so…
I understand that, which is why I said “unless you think pitching more innings over less starts is a bad thing”.
The only reason to use starts instead of IP is to disqualify Sanchez and Hershier for engagement bait, feeding into it by commenting inguess
Is this your first season watching baseball? Highly specific stats is what this sport is all about
What? I literally said this is a specific Cherry picked stat AND that Sanchez has been better thus far, what more do you want from me? lol. I respect defending your guy though, if there were people making specific cherry picked stats to make it seems like another pitcher was better than mine I’d also be a little ticked off at it.
I’m not saying that we disagree lol, just telling you that you did not need to explain to me why Sanchez failed to meet the criteria
It’s 7 days being on vs 6 days being on
It is impressive in a different way to have 7 straight crazy outings like this, as you’re seeing more opponents. And it’s not like Miz is pitching low innings, Cris is just pitching more.
Nobody will be complaining about him being an All-Star this time.
I mean i still think he shouldn’t have been an all star last year
Edit: idk if ur saying he shoulda been or not but i did see someone say they thought he deserved to be an all star last year bc he’s been good this year and that pissed me off
Wasn’t he invited because lots of starters turned it down? Was anyone snubbed?
Sanchez
Holy hell, I’d forgotten about that whole saga. Ok, that was the biggest of snubs. Definitely won’t be happening this year though since he’ll probably be starting.
then your guys shouldnt have declined it lol
Sanchez confirmed he did not get invited and did not decline. He absolutely deserved it more last year
wheeler and suarez were invited and declined, either of them says yes and it never gets to miz
They did, but regardless Sanchez was significantly more deserving but no one paid attention to him. He was 8-2 with a 2.50 ERA 1.13 WHIP with 122:32 Strikeouts to Walks at the break. No one who only made 5 starts should take a spot from someone who was playing at that level.
Ok but none of that is Miz’s fault or responsibility
this whole chain started because they said he shouldn’t have been an all star, not that he’s a piece of shit for being an all star lol
That doesnt mean he shouldve been an all star??
That’s not my point. I’m saying he doesn’t deserve to get shit on because someone asked him to be an all star
??
Whos shitting on him??
Dude is insane
Is this going to be the most competitive Cy Young award ever? Misiorowski, Sanchez, Ohtani, possibly even Miller. Kinda crazy
I don’t think Miller is really in it anymore. His numbers have fallen down to earth, it now just looks like an elite closer season, not “hes striking out 80% of the batters he sees” type season like it was.
Lots of season left. We need all but one of these guys to start sucking at some point or it’s going to be a brutal vote.
Chris Sale, Chase Burns, Skenes still very much exists, Yamamoto can quietly work his way closer to the convo. All those guys are very much close enough to where if they keep it up and Miz or Sanchez have a bad start all of a sudden the numbers look closer.
This is an awesome follow so far this season.
Kyle Harrison exists
My bad, bro isn’t qualified yet didn’t see him on the stat sheets 😭 no disrespect intended.
Gosh the Giants are truly inept.
How in the world did the Dodgers and GiantsBrewers win the Devers trade?
I think you mean Dodgers and Brewers…
Yes, I did.
If Skenes is already in the conversation, then so is Yamamoto
Yeah in the fan graphs tracker they’re pretty close on FIP CYP which is the metric they use to predict the award. That being said it’s Sanchez 72, them Miz just behind at 67, then a big drop to Shohei with 52; Yamamoto at 38.
Blake Treinen exists…
Not in Cy Young prediction lists he doesn’t
If we say ever, there’s gotta be some crazy seasons in the past that most of just weren’t there for right? But this one will be a fun ride.
Miller?
Edit: I know who he is, just seems like an odd guy to throw in there
Even if Miller kept up his insane numbers he had at the beginning of the year he’d only really have a chance in a weak starting pitcher year
Harrison is still there too and it’s a long season
Crazy how we aren’t even listing skenes anymore since he’s come down to earth this season
We will see! 2016 was the last crazy competitive one so only time will tell
Sanchez is just going to break this Tuesday, right?
3 NL pitchers have an ERA of 1.50 or lower with 60+ innings this season so far. MLB-wide last occurrence was in 2021, but 3 in same league it has been 107 years.
Kyle Harrison can join Miz, Sanchez, and Ohtani on Monday.
This very well could be a historic Cy Young race, or it could fizzle out like in 2021. The fact that a pitcher with a 0.74 ERA would likely end up third today is unfathomable.
If he has a good outing, yes.
Yeah I mean he’s been pitching excellent but just assuming he’s going to pitch another scoreless outing is too far. I’d love it but you know if he goes 7+ and let’s up a run or two that’s still awesome.
Dear Brewers,
Please send over your entire pitching-development apparatus.
XOXO,
The Baltimore Orioles
Isn’t that what we did with Burnes?
Shoulda looked at his source code to find out the secrets of the pitching lab
To paraphrase Rage Against the Machine: Not just Burnes; we want the machines that are making him.
You should have just disassembled Burnes to reverse-engineer it
Our pitching engineers are even worse than our pitching-development specialists.
This guy should have to register his four-seamer as a lethal weapon.
He’s been great, but it really helps only having to go 6 or 7 innings per start vs pitching as long as you were still effective in the old days
He’s also only gone 7 a few times on like 80 pitches but our bullpen is stacked so we pull him anyways
Our bullpen is pretty good but we have to keep them fresh for the guys not named Sanchez and Wheeler. Luzardo is kind of a coin flip, Nola and Painter you just have to assume are going to need 4 innings of relief.
Wait. How didn’t Sanchez already do this…?
He pitches more innings per game.
Alright so am I missing something here? Is this stat just super cherry picked? Because it doesn’t seem that cool when you consider Christopher Sanchez literally exists.
It’s seven starts. Sanchez’s current insane run is over 6 starts. So if he has another good outing next time out he will join that list.
I swore Ohtani started the season with only 1ER for a long time but apparently not over 7 starts.
Yes it is super cherry picked.
Sanchez’s last 7 starts are 52.2 IP and 3 ER.
Sanchez’s last 6 starts are 46 IP and 1 ER.
Just another one of those stats that adds a random cutoff to try and make a specific player look better.
I mean they both historic runs.
The NL Cy Young race is gonna be insane this year
Its a pet peeve but the big change after 68 was (likely) not the lowering of the mound but the shrinking of the strike zone.
Lowering the mound was definitely a huge change regardless of anything else.
was it? Please explain the mechanism of how. Note that I can easily explain how shrinking the strike zone helped.
Imagine the current pitchers with taller mound, bigger strike zone, and closer to the plate. Game would be unwatchable 15 inning scoreless outings.
Sanchez with almost identical ERA (0.196) over his last 6 as Miz over his last 7, with 46 innings pitched in that span vs 45.1. be wild if he gets another scoreless start on Monday.
sanchez 1 er over last 6 starts (46 ip), 0.19 era.
wild times we living in. nl gonna need 3 or 4 cy young awards this year.
I mean Cris Sanchez has 1 ER in 46 IP in his last 6 starts
Goddamn
The NL Cy Young race is insane. Three different pitchers are putting up historically numbers and flirting with history we’ve never seen before or haven’t seen in ages.
200mph fastballs’ll do that
Calling my shot: within the next three years Miz is going to get Tommy John surgery.
