Tyler Freeman gets clocked in the head with a Jacob Misiorowski 98mph pitch
Literally the worst pitcher to get domed by.
98 legit was 5 - 6 mph slower than it could’ve been from him. Doesn’t sound like much, but 5 - 7% more is tangible.
Very glad it looks like he was OK. Props to Contreras for his reaction.
5 mph faster would pack more than 11% more kinetic energy.

This guy maths.
Physics and maths.
I love posts like his. It’s been years since I studied physics (I’m a software engineer, not too much need for physics in my day to day), but I’m always fascinated by it.
This guy nerds.
I also nerd.
This guy this guys!
For anyone asking, yes, damage received can be modeled (to first order) as proportional to energy, i.e. proportional to square of speed.
That’s why interstate car crashes are so much worse than local road crashes. A 60 mph crash has four times the energy of a 30 mph crash. Double the speed, quadruple the damage.
Or, in the case of 100 mph pitches, +- 5mph equates to +- 10% more damage
Good thing for me that everyone in my city is doing 80 to 90 in the highway! That’s better than 60, right? Right?!
We love great nerdy info. Thanks boo
…took the math right out of my mouth…
It must been when you were calcin’ me!
Very glad it looks like he was OK
i think it’s far too soon to say. lots of players have gotten concussions and sometimes not even right after getting hit.
Yeah good point. I guess I jumped the gun - I more meant “not catastrophically hurt in the immediate sense” which is a concern at that velocity and getting plunked in the head.
Let’s hope he’s actually OK.
Could’ve hit him in the face and legit killed him so a concussion is a good case scenario even if there is a chance he never plays baseball again
Like Justin Morneau. Recently Heston Kjerstad seemed like he had arrived for us, but hasn’t really done anything since one off the dome in 24? Maybe 25, but awhile ago
That was his cutter
Wild Bill is good people. He’s very different than his big brother.
Yep, he can do a bit of light trolling of our rivals but otherwise he’s a good sport and never acts malicious or aggressive.
Showed this to my wife, had to slow it down because she couldn’t didn’t even see it. Had to tell her that at 98 it was kind of a slow pitch for him.
Mason Miller would be similarly bad but he’s apparently taking a sabbatical 🫠
Maybe mason miller
Whoever created that batting helmet I wish you a great rest of your evening
Just like the halo in F1. If it saves just one person, the implementation was worth it.
Wasn’t a big fan of the halo before they brought it in, I am glad they brought it in. I might be its biggest supporter right now. That thing has saved us from some very sad news/headlines since it was brought in. I don’t even notice it as much anymore.
Yeah there’s a super slow mo of Romain’s wreck it prevents his decapitation by pinging a beam by like 2 inches
Monza ‘21 as well. Saved Lewis from Max’ car crushing his spine into oblivion.
Even with the halo, Max’s tire was literally on his head, I shudder to think about it not being there.
Probably Zhou too in his rollover, as his roll support got crushed
Yeah without the halo he would have been sliding on his helmet, horrible failure of the safety structure on that one.
Need a video. No idea what you’re talking about
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ7_En2xEm4
I know you’re not the original commenter about the wreck, but there’s no slow motion in that video
This is a recreation of it. Best i could find but it shows how the top portion of the rail would have directly impacted his head.
https://youtu.be/8xmrNw9VLOk?si=fMOai0kInDUaOC1m
That video is so fucking clear with so many different angles.
The Aeroscreen in Indycar as well, it’s honestly uncountable how many lives it’s saved and hospital visits that it’s prevented
getting hit in the head with a piece of debris while going 200mph is fucking terrifying and the Aeroscreen all but eliminates that risk entirely, which thank fuck, do not need another Justin Wilson
Felipe Massa too. (Hungary 2008 IIRC. Got hit with a spring, immediately unconscious foot still on the gas straight into a wall.)
It was 2009. Basically derailed his career. He was literally World Champion until the very last corner of the last race the year before, never won another race after that accident.
why wouldn’t you be a fan lmfao what could be the possible downside as a fan this feels like reddit lip service
when the halo came out it was ugly as sin and there was a redesign that had to happen so drivers could get out faster
The ergonomics now are to the point where a driver (Bottas maybe) said it was easier to get out from where you pull up on the halo but he’s jacked so who knows
so he didn’t like lifesaving technology for the aesthetic? proving my point
I mean, the drivers all hated it and wanted it gone too at the time. This ain’t some Reddit narrative
Just like a ton of drivers (especially in NASCAR) hated the HANS device when it first came out, despite being maybe the single biggest lifesaving evolution in racing safety equipment.
I mean its like the guardian cap for football lol. People just dont like change / get weird about safety stuff.
I didn’t get the hate for the halo. Danger is sadly a prerequisite for speed, and anything we can do to reduce that risk is critical for the development of the sport.
If Senna’s era had even 1⁄10 of focus for safety measures as we do now, we would’ve been honored with more of his greatness.
After the Grosjean Crash, anyone who isn’t a fan is just obtuse.
Like the first year it was implemented at Spa it saved LeClerc from Alonso’s tire landing on his head.
And then Max literally driving on Lewis’ head at Monza. Or Zhou cruising down the straight upside down at Silverstone.
Halo in F1, Aeroscreen in Indy, and HANS device have to be credited with saving a lot of lives that’s for sure.
The HANS device would have saved Earnhardt in Daytona 2001. Except he refused to wear it.
Thanks! It was a labor of love.
I use cottonballs and old tires
Ray Chapman tips his cap, smiling down.
Yeah. Carl Mays as well. Since you know he felt like Miz looked
REAL MEN OF GEEEENIUS
I was just thinking the same thing, this very well could have been deadly or career destroying. Hopefully he’s okay and comes back soon.
Back in the day the league wouldnt require them because most the players didnt want them. I just think that says something about humans
Great job by Contreras and the ump to jump in right away to help Freeman
That was such a fast reaction too
His brother would’ve swept Freeman’s legs out from under him.
We not only made him a better catcher, but a better human.
Willson is awesome if he’s playing on your team and an insufferable hothead if he’s playing against your team. We love him in Boston.
Oh man by the end of his Cubs tenure I was VERY done with his schtick. It gets old pretty fast.
You don’t love a guy standing on the plate and getting mad when the ball gets close to him?
He did the same when CB Bucknor got pegged
Are we still doing phrasing?
Bucknor is an awful umpire but you hate to see anyone take a shot like that.
Then he called it a strike.
I’m not sure they actually helped lol but they were sweet to be concerned
They both braced his body and which is pretty smart when someone is dazed, last thing you want is them falling over and hitting their head again
I doubt any sane person would think Mis did this on purpose, but just defusing the situation and caring about your fellow person goes a long way in situations like this. This is something Freeman will likely never forget (if he remembers it at all…), and just human compassion will be a huge part of it.
Anyone who remotely thinks this was intentional is a special kind of stupid. Mis is clearly visibly concerned and shaken himself. And yet I’m sure someone will make a serious argument it was intentional.
Yeah you could tell right away that he was pretty broken up about it. This used to cause a bunch of hbp in every star player at bat, but I think and hope we’re passed that now.
I made the mistake of reading the Instagram comments on a reel of this. You’d be shocked (or maybe you wouldn’t be) how many salty fans seemed to think it was on purpose.
Miz is a great kid and I’m sure his reaction to that was real. There’s no way he didn’t feel terrible. I just hope Freeman is alright. I can’t even imagine how much that hurt.
Yeah, no chance in the world Mis meant to do that. Beyond just being a good kid (which I agree, by all accounts he is), why the fk would he throw at Freeman here in a 1-1 count against the Rockies?!
But, there’s a difference between being indifferent and actually showing genuine compassion for another person who just got hurt. Contreras and Miz handled this the right way.
It’s like when Skubal hit David Fry in the face during a bunt attempt. Skubal is the most cocky person on the planet when he’s pitching. As soon as that ball hit his face, he dropped his glove and hat, and was shattered. He then visited him in the hospital that night. There’s a game, and then there’s actual people’s wellbeing. Being a competitor doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice being a decent person. Glad the Brew battery handled this the right way.
Actually yeah that’s a good point
I miss wild bill so damn much.
He’s always so chill but whenever a big play happens he screams for like 2 seconds, fist pumps, and then goes back to chill.
El Rey holds court he knows how to react at the appropriate time
They knew. Glad they reacted so quickly.
It came off with a ton of velocity still so I’m hopeful he didn’t absorb too much of it.
scary as hell
It’s the ones where the helmet stays that make my stomach drop
Yeah Christian Walker got hit square in the head recently and his helmet partially exploded (particularly the face guard extension) and flew off him. A lot of people were freaked out but I was relieved because it showed how much force the helmet absorbed instead of his head. He still rightly left the game immediately for testing but cleared it all and was back the next day with no issues.
They really need to force the extended helmet protectors in the way they did new bats because it’s a huge safety issue.
I have the same helmet and the chin flap is held on by a rotating pin type thing and no hard fasteners. You push it in the rotate it down into position. That’s how you can see some guys with it in different places. So not that hard to knock off but your point still stands.
It would explain why it exploded off separately, but it clearly absorbed a lot of force itself and didn’t hit his face in any harmful way in the process. There’s a shocking amount of fundamental safety research for baseball that just hasn’t been carried out.
Clip of that
Those are some genuinely awful Boston uniforms - were they supposed to symbolize something I’m not aware of?
The Boston Marathon
And the announcer said goodness gracious too. I guess that’s what one says when someone gets hit in the head.
Same thing we were saying on the team sub when Bobby Miller took a line drive off the head. The ball flew off, and he ended up avoiding a fracture or anything too scary. So hopefully that’s the same case here.
(And if it is, Kíke has a hat for him after this…)
Totally. You can already see how red his ear and some nearby areas are on his head. It hit the helmet square but still a ton of force is transferred.
These velocities are insane, both pitched and batted. I feel like the MLB needs to do a better job of protecting players. I know the guys are tough and proud but thicker helmets and maybe face/headguards for the pitchers doesn’t seem like a horrible idea.
I just don’t want guys to get seriously hurt where it can be prevented and I don’t think it takes away from the game at all.
Chat, does 98 mph to the dome hurt?
Who the hell is this guy and how does he have an appropriate gif for EVERY SINGLE POST?
He’s a well known zip line enthusiast.
Well know shirt collector as well
You don’t wear them ironically, TC Tuggers.
Knows hats as well
Also the host of Coffin Flop on Corncob TV
It looked like he had dice in his pockets.
Has the hit song “That Was The Night The Skeletons Came To Life”, not sure how OP hasn’t heard of him
Slish Valez has entered the chat.
he wrenches on the rope. he thinks it’s his.
The world’s foremost silent performer
He used to be a piece of shit
His name is Tim Robinson for anyone still wondering.
I Think You Should Leave. You’re welcome.
I just started watching this yesterday. First show that’s actually made me laugh out loud in a long time.
Have you gotten to the car focus group yet? Pure comedy gold.
He’s not gonna get it.
He’s a club haunted house VIP
He’s the lesser known of the Tesh brothers that wrote Round Ball Rock
He used to be a piece of shit.
Goddamn there’s a gif of this character for everything.
ITYSL is the gif goat
If getting domed by a 45 mph pitch is any indication, 98 feels unpleasant.
Idk in high school I got hit in the head with a ~75 mph fastball from a guy trying to quick pitch me. Heard a loud thunk but there was no pain at all. If MLB helmets are proportionally as good then he’s fine.
Kinetic energy goes up by velocity squared. A pitch traveling 98 mph isn’t 1.3 times as energetic as a pitch traveling 75mph, it’s closer to twice as much energy.
I got hit in the head in little league…our helmets were….low quality. Most of them looked like they were previously used to scoop out water from a sinking ship. I’m sure better helmets make a difference.
Luckily it wasn’t 102
Just be grateful it wasn’t 103.7 mph to the dome!
103.7 WMPH-FM *The Dome*™
in second grade i got hit by a soccer ball by another second grader in the stomach and it hurt real bad.
if that hurt then surely 98 to the dome was beyond hurt.
I once got hit in the head with a tether ball in fourth grade. Probably the same feeling
Well that’s fucking scary but it looks like the helmet did its job eating most of that.
Yeah, hopefully. Presumably that angry looking red mark around his ear is from the impact? Damn.
Yep that’s from the impact, it’s crazy how hard he got hit. His ears gotta be ringing too since that was right on the flap.
Hopefully other than that it’s nothing else and he recovers well.
definitely still a concussion but way better than the alternative
wear your helmet, put on your seat belt
And brush your teeth!
And watch out for deer.
And don’t tug on Superman’s cape
Spay and neuter your pets
That ball went bouncing pretty far - that’s all kinetic energy he didn’t absorb which is good. Helmet did the job.
Yeah, thankfully the helmet absorbed a lot of the impact. It was close to hitting him directly on the face, which would have been a lot worse.
Good on Contreras for checking him out right away too.
I’m so glad that extra flap on the helmet is mandatory, if that ball was even an inch or two lower that could’ve been a really scary situation. Hope Freeman is okay, all things considered.
It’s not mandatory
3.08©
All Major League players must wear a single ear-flap helmet (or at the player’s option, a double ear-flap helmet).
You’re referencing the ear flap, OP is talking about the extra jaw flap that Freeman is wearing which is not mandatory
But it doesn’t seem to hit the jaw flap, it looks like it hits the standard ear flap, which is why I figure that was the flap referred to in the root comment
If the jawline protector hadn’t been there and the ball was just a couple inches lower, you’d have what happened to Giancarlo Stanton years ago in Miami. His mouth and jaw were destroyed. He said all he could taste was blood and he was spitting out dislodged teeth while the world was spinning.
Such a humane moment though, the way everyone involved reacted. Gosh I wonder how it would feel to be hit like that
Im a doctor, in my profession opinion…it would smart like a mother fucker.
Damn, I hate when it smarts
Gotta get a box of Nerds prescribed for that
Fun fact: “smarts” comes from the German word for pain, “shmerz”
That’s not fun
Loved to see the reactions from everyone involved. Hope Freeman is okay
We share different sentiments. I have absolutely no curiosity about how it feels to take a 98mph fastball square off the dome.
Yea nope, if I was hit in the head by literally any pitch from the Miz, there is zero chance my ass would ever pick up a bat again. Good run, absolutely NOPE the fuck out of there.
You basically described me in little league. My best friend was slinging 60-65 at 12 and ended up on a different team and lost control our first gane against each other and nailed me with a fast ball in the side of the helmet. I was absolutely trash at bat the rest of the season and refused to sign up the next year.
I also took one to the dome in little league and was trash the rest of the season
To be fair though I was trash before that too
Yeah I was never great at the plate either. Loved playing catcher though.
I got hit in the hand playing little league and it never made me play the same again cause I was scared of the ball. Don’t get how these guys get back in the box after nasty hits
I mean, yeah the helmet basically prevented the guy from being a veggie or like dead. But concussions happen daily with helmets on and you dont get many of those before shit gets weird. Always blows seeing the really fast ones catch someone in the head.
I misread that and thought you said it prevented him from being a vegan.
Can you believe they only started being required in 1971, and didn’t require an ear protector until 1983 (and that rule was only for new players entering the league)
Holy moly
That catcher wasted ZERO time checking on him.
Wild Bill always just seems like a fantastic person
The complete opposite of his brother.
You just wince seeing that shit. I really hope he’s okay.
I’m choosing not to watch it. But I hope he’s ok.
You should watch it. It looks way worse than it was. It fully hit the side of his helmet.
Scary for sure, and he’ll likely have a concussion, but the helmet did its job!
It’s worth watching. It’s not graphic and there’s no blood. A bit scary nonetheless.
Armchair doctor in me says he seemed fairly alert but shook walking off after, but definitely have to go into protocol after that. Hoping for the best, very glad we as a species invented helmets.
I think I would volunteer myself to be hospitalized if this happened to me
honestly probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to get some precautionary imaging
His command is nowhere rn and still gone 6 IP 1R(unearned) Also Joey Ortiz literally does nothing how does this man get any playing time
Ortiz is great on defense… today’s error notwithstanding.
I’ve been asking this question for 2 years. However our other option is playing Rengifo at third and Hamilton at short. Rengifo does even more nothing
The entire fanbase has no idea
I don’t think i’ve ever seen a catcher go that quickly in checking in on him.
Oh good gods please be ok TFree
Thinking the same thing! He’s one of my favourite Guards to be traded in the last few years and I wish him so much well.
Stop nsfw things that aren’t nsfw
How freeman is ok that’s scary as hell
Awww dangit. I REALLY didn’t want to jump on the Miz bandwagon… But between the video of him opening and signing baseball cards with young fans, to his obviously authentic and concerned reaction to hitting a batter in the head …. It’s impossible to not like him. 🤨👍
And that was one of his slower pitches.
I, for one, would have died.
When awful things like this happen, it is incredibly refreshing to see the humanity and compassion.
Thank God he’s ok…. That’s fucking scary. That’s the last pitcher you wanna get domed by…
Jesus. Good thing he looked away immediately. His face would’ve been cracked if he took that straight.
That has concussion protocol written all over it but I’ve seen worse outcomes from HBPs. I hope he’s fine soon.
I
I knew a kid in high school who got hit in same place but on an errant throw to first base as he was running down the line. Suffered partial hearing loss and now has vertigo. And it wasn’t even a 98 mph cutter. Anything to the head is very scary.
Why don’t pitchers ever walk over and make sure the batter is okay? Catchers can, but you almost never see a pitcher.
stay out of the trainers way. Catcher and ump are already there. Nothing can be done to help, can only make things worse.
If the batter feels it was done on purpose or just is mad about getting hit, he’s probably not going to take too kindly to the pitcher walking at him. Though, you’ll sometimes see them acknowledge each other as the batter is taking his base once the dust settles and everybody knows how the other feels
Besides what everyone else posted already. As a pitcher, there is just nothing you can do to make it better. If they are hurt; you are a pitcher, not a doctor; if their ego is hurt, you are pitcher, not a psychologist.
If you want to apologize, its worth far more to approach them after the game with a calm “my bad dog” than doing it in the field.
I think what Miz did was right. Clearly showing that he’s shaken, taking the moment seriously and being aware of how dangerous that was. Like the last thing you wanna see a pitcher do is shrug, act like it was nothing or joke about it.
Over in Japan, pitchers take their cap off and solemnly bow to the batter to apologize and make it clear to everyone it was an accident.
I wish something like that would get incorporated here in the states, it would defuse a lot of confrontations from HBPs that do not have to happen.
(And for the curious, yes: If a pitcher doesn’t take his cap off and apologize after an HBP, the implication was the act was deliberate and all hell subsequently breaks loose because it’s not baseball anymore.)
The threat of the batter retaliating always lingers. I also think some stay away so they don’t add to the number of people buzzing around.
