The official NBA Instagram was literally posting more than weekly highlights of Wemby when he was still on Mets 92 before he was drafted. Part of how I found out about the legend of Steeve Ho You Fat.

He did not say that, and in context he was actually very in touch with how things are and fan concerns. He was answering a question where he was asked about younger fans watching on social media. His full context comments are always cut off to make him look out of touch, cos sensationalism and hate gets more views and attention than fair-mindedness.

Here’s what he said for full clarity:

“Interviewer: It has become very expensive to watch the NBA as a fan. Not just going to games but also there’s different streaming services you have to subscribe to, some of the RSNs are expensive. I know that there are other points of entry for fans to interact with the NBA, there’s social media, and a lot of younger fans that is how they’re experiencing the sport but I wonder how much you think about that and how that shapes the next generation of fans?”

“Silver: I think about it a lot. I saw the story your publication ran, you took all the different streaming services and added them up and what those costs would be. I look at it a little bit differently because most people can only consume so many games, I just want by way of one example in these new media deals we’re going from essentially 15 exposures on broadcast television to 75, now so I mean to the extent somebody wants to put little rabbit ears on their television you can still get 75 marquee games in essence for free in the market place. I’d say in addition to that, and this is an ongoing issue for the league, there’s a huge amount of our content that people can essentially consume for free. I mean this is very much a highlights based sport you know so you know instagram tiktok you know twitter you name it any service you know the New York Times for that matter to the extent that your content is not behind a paid firewall, there’s enormous amount of content out there. Youtube another example that is advertising based that consumers can consume.”

I think it’s, this is a new world now of streaming media. I think we’re paying a lot of attention to that it was one of the discussions we had with our media partners I think not just the cost of the games, I think most people are conditioned to paying a certain amount for high value content but also the discovery of those games. I’m a fan of many different sports and I think we’ve all had that experience where you’re going to google to find the game you want to watch because the world’s changed, it’s not just automatically in the place you thought it would be. So but ultimately I’ll talk about it in terms of reach and how you reach your consumers, it’s interesting because of the disruption in the regional sport network business, I never would have predicted this was coming 10 years ago, but a lot of our local games are moving back to broadcast television, in fact we have more games on broadcast television locally than we had any time in recent history. So we’re continuing to look at it, but ultimate answer is we think a lot about it, we know, we have mass appeal, on a global basis you know we’re literally reaching billions of people and we dont want to disenfranchise people by working with partners that are creating price points that make it inaccessible to them.”

The viewing figures are way up this year, so the complaints turned out to be totally invalid. The NBA would have been absolutely insane to turn down the silly money that streamers are throwing at them.

Silver is literally a Knicks fan, from New York, but you guys will still push some conspiracy that he’s calling the refs and telling them to penalise the 2nd largest market, for no personal benefit to him whatsoever. He gets paid the same whoever wins, why should he care and conspire in a way that would destroy the league’s reputation if it ever came to light? You think he trusts these moderately paid game officials to put his entire reputation in their hands, for no benefit?

Home teams tend to get biased reffing across all sports, it’s not bloody rocket science. And it’s only a 2 game sample size. The NBA perhaps could do more to ensure refs counter-act this pressure of the home crowds, but Silver CERTAINLY isnt telling them to be biased against the Knicks.

The problem is that clearly the referees are being instructed to make the finals as profitable as possible instead of as fair as possible.
