Nah, Shaq was still elite in those finals. 5 turnovers a game is bad, but you don’t get to say you “shut someone down” over that if everything else was great. 28/13/6 with 2.5 blocks, over 60% true shooting.

And hakeem averaged 2 steals a game, it’s not like all of those Shaq turnovers specifically came from Hakeem in the first place.

Like at that point you might as well argue that LeBron got shut down by Durant in 2018. 5 turnovers per game in a sweep is the criteria, right?

I am on the older side here and I watched that whole series. I know the stats in hindsight look great, but the it was obvious Shaq was flustered with Olajuwon guarding him. Very similar to Wemby right now. I’m sure after this series is over, Wemby’s overall stats will be great. But anyone watching can clearly see he is not playing the same.

Shaq was a freak and an absolute specimen, destroying backboards and doing anything he wanted in the post. In that finals in 1995, he was clear Olajuwon was on another level and Shaq looked human.

Yep, I watched the series live as well. Despite Hakeem being my favorite player of all time, I often find myself defending Shaq against the claims that he got “destroyed” in that series, because he didn’t. His stats, aside from turnovers, were fantastic. But Hakeem did get the better of him.

There are things stats simply won’t convey, like how Hakeem’s offensive versatility and threat as a jump shooter pulled Shaq away from the basket and made their offense less predictable. The Magic tried to counter this by switching Horace Grant onto Hakeem at times, but had little success. On the other side of the ball, as much of a force as Shaq was near the basket, the fact that he wasn’t a threat outside of about 8 feet meant Hakeem was able to always defend Shaq without abandoning the paint. This is an example of why stat comparisons alone don’t always tell the entire story. Context and knock-on effects matter.

It’s a bit like what we’re seeing in this Finals. KAT is able to draw Wemby away from the paint and capitalize on it in ways that the Thunder weren’t able to with any real success. Even when KAT isn’t scoring directly, he’s putting the Spurs defense out of position and creating opportunities elsewhere. Looking back in 30 years, no stat is going to tell you that.

That Sheed was free to play help defense on both Kobe and Shaq meant that Ben could focus 100% on denying Shaq post position and Prince could over play Kobe’s jump shot. To me the wild part isn’t so much the specifics parallels - coincidences the OP listed, but more on the media hype side of things. Back in the mid 90s, major sports media constantly pronounced stuff like “titles almost certainly are in their future!” about the Magic because of the “unique” or “unprecedented” Shaq. And any time folks urged circumspection, they’d double-down on how Shaq’s uniqueness made their “They’ll be back and win titles!” confident different. Been hearing a lot of similar confident (click-bait?) hyping of Wemby and the Spurs for a while, and definitely more as the playoffs have gone on.

The problem with trying to compare Cavs 2007 to any other Finals team is both that the Cavs 2007 team was the worst Finals team ever and also LeBron’s 2007 Conference Finals performance was as uniquely great as that team was bad.

BUT I think you can absolutely compare the 2026 Spurs and 2007 Cavs Conference Finals experiences yes- the upstart winning a hard-fought 7-game series as underdogs against the conference bully. This Spurs team is just really good and beat a historically great OKC to get here while that Cavs team started Drew Gooden and relied on Boobie Gibson to beat the “Last Dance” version of that formerly-great-but-now-old-and-poopy Pistons team.

But both LeBron and it would seem Mike Brown learned from it.

But if u were to ask me, it was Nick Anderson’s fault for missing 4 free throws in a row (he basically missed 2 and then grabbed his own rebound and was fouled again almost instantaneously) with very little time remaining in the 4th. All he needed was to make one and it would’ve sealed the win. But no. He missed all 4 and Kenny Smith tied the game with a clutch 3 to send it to overtime.

Interesting, but you’re mixing a lot of coincidences.

When there isn’t an exact match you make it fuzzy - SG/SF, or “drafted several years earlier”. The progression of the teams makes sense. Draft a big man, then a point guard, team is your and getting high picks, they need a new coach for new era. Lost playoff games when young and then explode into a finals run. It’s interesting, very, but you make it spookier than it is
