Brunson vs Ewing kind of feels like apples and oranges to me. Ewing carried the franchise for a decade in the 90s despite not having great talent around him. He had very good teams stacked with tough as nails guys, but never had a true star teammate. Brunson on the Knicks has been blessed to have much more talented and more complete rosters around him than Ewing ever did.

From 1992 to 1999, the Knicks won an average of 52 games per season (pro-rated for the shortened 1999 season) and made it to at least the 2nd round of the playoffs all 8 of those seasons, including 2 Finals appearances and 2 Conference Finals. (Ewing was hurt for much of the 1999 Finals run, but they don’t make it out of the first round against Alonzo Mourning’s Heat in the first round without him– they won the final Game 5 in the best-of-5 series 78-77 with Ewing as their best player in the game putting up 22-11.) During this span Ewing finished top 5 in MVP voting 4 times and made All-NBA 2nd team 3 times (and would have many more All-NBA accolades if he didn’t play in a historically great era for centers along with Hakeem, Shaq, and Robinson). But during the same span he only had one season with an All-Star teammate (in 1994 Charles Oakley and John Starks both had the only All-Star nods of their careers, in large part as a recognition of the team’s overall success that season), and Ewing never played with a teammate who made All-NBA. Despite that, he got to a Game 7 in the Finals and narrowly lost. In different universes with different bounces here and there, Ewing wins the 94 Finals. The Knicks might have won Game 6 on Starks’s buzzer-beating 3 if Hakeem hadn’t got his fingernail on the shot.

So Ewing hard carried a team to prolonged success for almost a decade as their only real All-Star / All-NBA guy. I don’t think Brunson is that kind of player. As great as he is, if Brunson is your best guy there’s a lot more work you need to do to put a roster around him to cover his weaknesses than you do with Ewing as your guy. The Knicks have been fortunate to have been able to do that with flying colors in the Brunson era, whereas they never managed to get Ewing a really viable second guy. KAT as Brunson’s 2nd guy is already far above anyone Ewing had. KAT has been an All-Star both seasons with the Knicks as Brunson’s teammate and was All-NBA 3rd team last season, and previously was a 3-time All-Star and 2-time All-NBA 3rd team with the Wolves, and already helped the Wolves make WCF as their 2nd guy in 2024. And obviously he’s taken his game to another level in these playoffs and is the favorite to win Finals MVP if the Knicks close the series out. And the Knicks have also been able to hide Brunson’s vulnerabilities on defense by stacking the roster with good wing defenders, including Anunoby who is 2-time 2nd team All-Defense.

Having said that, Brunson is better at carrying an offense than Ewing. In a tight playoff situation where you need a first option to get you buckets, you take Brunson over Ewing. If you’ve already got a great roster, Brunson might do more to put you over the top. But as the central foundation for a winning team, Ewing does more for you than Brunson.

Taking all that into consideration, I’d still put Ewing above Brunson even if he wins the title this year. Ewing is criminally underrated nowadays, and was criminally undersupported in his day in terms of roster talent. Maybe that changes for me if Brunson continues to do what he’s been doing and the Knicks continue to have prolonged playoff success, but I’ve got to give Ewing his due respect.

He’s had to deal with the spectre of lolknicks of the past 50 years looming over his shoulder. There’s been a lot of pressure and pessimism to deal with these past 2-3 years. To be the hope of the franchise and city and also have the media constantly doubt you aint so easy to deal with.

Slow down. Clyde won 7x first team all defense teams and two rings. Reed got MVP. Brunson got a big hill to climb.

It was and is very important to Cuban’s ego that he be the smartest in the room which is why the Mavs barely did any significant winning trades or free agent signings over his tenure. He also didn’t keep pre-MVP Nash paired up with Dirk and didn’t run his championship team back iirc.

I sort of understand the rationale of letting Nash go since he had back problems and just turned 30, there was a decent chance that contract could’ve turned toxic. Obviously Nash still had plenty left in the tank but you have to give some credit to the PHX training staff for that too.

Brunson, on the other hand, was a 25 year old who’d never been seriously hurt, had gotten better and better every year, was the 2nd best player on a conference finals team and you had no way to replace him

Eh…I think for Brunson to truly become the player he is he needed to be the primary ball handler and starting. And given the implosion which happened shortly after in Dallas, he ended in a much better place. Now that Dallas has cleaned house, including Cuban no longer playing fantasy GM, Dallas can start with a clean slate.

Right, sure. I’d argue NYK is perfectly built around Brunson and the Mavs were/are kinda a mess (and I say that as a Mavs fan).

Massive compared to what? Those costs won’t be that much different than a mid January game. More, but not by the multitudes you’re suggesting.

They probably range from \(500 to \)10K per seat across the levels. But even for the best 100 seats, those are locked in for season and premium ticket holders ranging from long time holders, companies who have seats, sponsors, etc. League sponsors, league guests, and the Spurs also have alloted tickets in the lower bowl area.

That’s honestly cheaper than I thought.
