UCLA with Kareem lost two games in four years, winning 3 titles in that span.

And in the overall span with Wooden, had 10 national titles in 12 seasons, from 1964 to 1975, including seven straight from 1967 to 1973. UCLA went undefeated a record four times (1964, 1967, 1972, and 1973).

So in short, no Villanova are not.

Not to mention Kareem went on to be a top 5 at bare minimum NBA player of all time so you had an all time, all time great anchoring that team. Jay Wright’s Nova bunch are fantastic but I’m willing to bet that collectively they won’t end up with as many MVPs, First Team All NBA’s and maybe Rings as Kareem.

The 1982 Tar Heels I would say are the only other legitimate contender outside of the Kareem Bruins. I think many people on this board heard of a few of their players. Some guys named Sam Perkins, James Worthy and this Micheal Jordan character who I heard turned out a pretty good NBA career for himself.

It’s really hard because the NBA was consumed so differently back then. Kareem’s peak was before cable TV, the NBA was well behind the MLB, the NFL, Boxing and Horse Racing when it came to sports people cared about in the US. Dr J was way more popular a figure. Many older fans at that time still felt Wilt was the best player they’ve ever seen despite his relative lack of team success. And before Magic, Bird and Mike international fandom wasn’t really a thing yet.

I think had Kareem come along 20 years later and ended up having more or less the exact same career (including NCAA dominance) he’d probably be nearly unanimously considered the GOAT even to this day.

If you want to talk about quality of talent, you’ve got the ‘82 Heels team with James Worthy, Sam Perkins, and oh yeah, Michael Jordan.

The Laettner/Hurley/Hill Duke teams were pretty dominant and had a bunch of future pros. Florida’s 2 year run with Horford, Noah, and Brewer was in the same vein. To me, those ‘Nova teams belong in this part of the conversation.

That Wisconsin team was the most efficient offensive team of the modern era at the time until they were passed 2 years ago. They also had a major advantage in experience as a lot of the Kentucky stars skewed younger

Also Kentucky didnt even make it to the finals of the tourney that year so not sure how they would be considered better than the 15-16 Nova team that went 35-5, produced 4 NBA starters and won a championship.

I’m a Villanova fan and never in my wildest dreams did I expect this. I had Brunson as maybe a rotation guy in the NBA. II thought Bridges could be decent, and didn’t think much about Hart much at all. DiVincenzo being a good pro floors me.
