Would Brunson still be good enough to win it all if he replaced Jokic in 2023, Steph in 2022, Giannis in 2021, LeBron in 2020, Kawhi in 2019 or LeBron/Steph before the KD warriors? I think those team don’t win with Brunson instead, which is the previous bar for best player on a championship team.
Same holds true for SGA and Tatum. The last couple champs, OKC and Boston, were very balanced and stacked teams so the bar for best player on a championship team is lower. I don’t think SGA or Tatum win it all if they were swapped into the previous championship teams I mentioned either
On the flip side, you put 2023 Jokic, 2022 Steph, 2021 Giannis, 2020 LeBron, 2019 Kawhi, 2016 LeBron onto any of the past 2 champs + these Knicks, and they’d be on another level of dominant
I love Brunson and the Knicks too, I was at the MSG watch party last night, but that is the difference I see in recent best players on a championship team. Previous teams were a lot more top heavy so the best and second best players were better and stood out a lot more.

idk I feel like this is one of those games where the box score doesn’t tell the story. Seemed like ever shot Brunson made was huge in terms of momentum and he went on like a 8-0 run by himself when they were trailing
He was just very streaky the whole game. He’d miss a bunch in a row and the Spurs would open a lead and then he’d make a bunch in a row and the Knicks would come roaring back. It will be interesting to see if he can find some consistency against this defense during this series.

The game could have very easily gotten out of hand had he not went on that early 8-0 run. His overall game was not great but it’s a team game. Everyone on the knicks contributed positively tonight.
