Is there any precedent for dominant championship teams making big offseason moves and maintaining their success for subsequent seasons? could we have traded some of our guys at peak value to maximize Tatum’s prime pre-injury? Would a Jaylen-Giannis trade have been viable before this off season?

Maybe that mindset is the reason why there have been no repeat champions in the last 8 years. The thunder are another example of having the ability to make roster upgrades but choosing not to. Not saying it was the wrong decision, but it seems silly to completely disregard other options.

You don’t break up a team that just won a championship if you can help it. There hasn’t been a repeat champion in 8 years because the modern game makes keeping an 8-9 man core healthy through two 82 game seasons and 2 full playoff runs near impossible. Pretty much every championship winners subsequent season was derailed by injury and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Maybe we’ll see a team make a huge move after winning a ring one day, I just don’t think the risk is really worth it - could you imagine the fan backlash if a championship winning team made a huge trade and saw a big regression?

i look at it kind of like in baseball despite the dodgers repeating they still continuously look to make big swings/add high level guys yet in the NBA its like people believe as soon as you win once that proves you can win and nothing has to ever change

They just didn’t stay healthy, that’s why they didn’t repeat. Porzingis was a liability due to his illness, Jaylen Brown was playing hurt almost all year as well.

Should? No. The only reason to ‘break up the team’ was financial. Injuries always determine championships: KP and especially Jrue were out of gas because of full season, full playoffs, Olympics, full season, playoffs. Lucky always plays a role but so does Fatigue.

I was sort of rooting for OKC to repeat and then have to make changes (financial reasons!) because that’s chaos. Alas. Now they will make changes and probably get to game 7 of the WCF again next year. Not as much fun.

We got injured at the wrong time. KP, JBs meniscus, jrue’s hamstring and Tatum’s Achilles all happened in the postseason.

I don’t think we should have shaken up the roster after winning. It seems disrespectful to the players if we moved on without reason.

Take the 2020-21 Lakers after winning l, they moved on from key role players in Dwight, green, McGee, rondo, and Bradley to get younger. Which backfired as they lost their defensive identity.

I feel like in 2024-25, we still had a chance to win if we were all healthy. Plus what move would we have made to shake up our roster? I trust Stevens would have made a move if he thought it was best for the team

They could’ve traded some of the younger guys away to deepen the bench. Had a few teams over pay for championship players. Would’ve helped with KP, Jrue and Al aging and hurt. But we traded those guys instead and didn’t have the depth of experience.

But really the stupid chuck up threes mentality killed them on top of KP getting sick plus Jrue and Al got tired.
