Giannis: Wemby stopper?
A big argument for adding Giannis to this team - is there anyone in the league right now better equipped to deal with Wemby? I think not
Idk I think PP on JT’s shoulders (and they’re sharing one large trench coat) could be effective
Big PP
Big PP can still drain crazy 3s like Wemby has been doing, too.
Let’s hope he can’t be stopped and just runs over this Knicks team.
He’s the only guy in the league right this second that can match up to Wemby physically.
But there’s no way he’ll be able to do it much longer, if he’ll even be able to do it next year.
Wemby isn’t even in his prime yet theoretically. Giannis should be on the way out of his.
Gotta just worry about getting out of the east and the competition here. Can’t be worrying about the finals when the team just got pantsed by the 76ers.
as if Giannis won’t help us get out of the east
I should have specified, despite what I said, if we can pair Giannis and Tatum we should do it ASAP. There isn’t anyone near his level we’d be able to bring in and it’s worth the risk to not just punt a year of Tatum’s prime.
100% agree
He definitely won’t help if he’s on the sidelines with another injury
this idea that people in here have that Giannis is Joel Embiid or Anthony davis constantly on the sidelines is just not rooted in reality
The idea that Giannis, with a very physical play style and large frame, and who has already missed significant time due to injury this season, is going to continue to be as healthy from age 32 forward as he was in his mid-20s, is also not rooted in reality.
I don’t think anyone is saying that he is. but you have to take risks to try to win a championship. Right now we have JT who is a top 5 or 6 guy in the league, Jaylen who is somewhere in the top 20 who frequently plays worse in the playoffs, and a solid supporting cast. That’s not exactly the formula for a title winning team. ITs a formula that will frequently finish as a top 5 or 6 team in the league for sure, we’ve seen these teams struggle to generate great offense in the playoffs.
JT + Giannis, another top 5 or 6 guy? That is a formula that has frequently won NBA titles. If things work out you’re talking 65+ wins and a true title favorite.
There’s risk but the potential reward is worth it. The best teams in this league right now are REALLY good, and like this post is all about, Giannis is about as well equipped to give Wemby serious trouble as anyone.
Media reported a couple of days ago that this isn’t happening.
if Brad is gonna do something here he’s certainly gonna be really quiet about it. he’s not gonna dangle JB in trades all summer and then bring him back. I wouldn’t read too much into what’s being said about all this.
Valid. Can we afford him? And that’s a lot of egos on the court at the same time. lol I’m all for it but I dunno.
No such thing as a Wemby stopper but he’d be better than most
You aren’t going to stop wemby. Better to have someone who can shoot from outside that makes him leave the paint.
This!
Celtics aren’t sitting at home because they couldn’t stop player x, they’re at home because they need more consistent offensive production from guys not name Jay. Wemby, SGA, Joker w.e can get their 30 because Tatum or brown will likely match it with their output it’s the other guys who need to either step up or the Celtics need to find other players who can
If he stays healthy, Wemby will be in the category of players like Shaq: dominant and nigh-unstoppable. But even Shaq didn’t win rings by himself.
That being the case, the best way to stop Wemby isn’t to only try to stop him specifically, but to heavily reduce the effectiveness of the rest of the team. It’s how the Pistons did it in 2004, it’s how we did it vs Luka in 2024, and it’s how the rest of the league will adjust as Wemby gets into his prime. Time will tell whether we get the pieces to do so.

No
It’s a fool’s errand to build a team to contend with any single opponent, whether it’s a team or an individual player. Right now Wembanyama looks scary, sure. At any point, a medical or orthopedic issue to this giant human might totally change the direction of his career (not at all hoping for that, but that’s the reality for players this size). The Celtics just need to prioritize building the best team possible, and contending over a multi-year period. You need luck – including bad luck to other contenders, unfortunately – in any given year to win a title. Better off just being ready to capitalize year after year.
